Then on January 30, 1933, a killjoy named Adolf Hitler came to power preaching a twisted Puritanism. He banned jazz, jailed and shot homosexuals and herded prostitutes into officially sanctioned brothels. Within weeks, Berlins distinctive music had stopped.
A lot of the fun was far from wholesome. Thousands of young Berlin girls, many in their mid-teens, worshipped dancer Anita Berber, who performed in the nude at the White Mouse cabaret and who indulged in cocaine, morphine and lovers of both sexes. She roared through Berlins night life with a gang of pugs, thugs and drunks, and died of tuberculosis at 29.
