Hi I'm a wrestler and I'm kinda new to wrestling specific excercises. Would this be a good excercise for wrestling and what other kettlebell excercises would you recommend for wrestlers?
nearly popped your knee steve on the way down ov your turkish getup variation think the weight is to heavy for you there. why are you instructing on videos using a heavy weight new guys to kbs should start this useing no weight or a light weight.
@magiciansoncrack I did not see where he almost popped his knee. Actually i think his technique is perfect. And you shouldn't give advice to Steve Cotter about kbs. It's like telling Messi how to shoot a ball. As for the weights, he can use weights as heavy as this so he does. That's all. Beginners should start with light weights of course.
@id0stuff lol i do know that, but still, i feel its cheating cause it makes it worlds easier... doing a turkish with 30 (the most ive got) is hard, but when i use a hand its super easy as in it becomes nothing anything that makes an excercise easier is cheating to me
@narezul well 30 is a begging male weight, try and strap two of your 30's with duck tape to make it 60 to give you a challenge, 100lbs is the ultimate goal though.
@narezul well that is how the exercise is done, it's a lot more than locking out and balancing, the body positions you go through while getting up works the entire body, if it wasn't difficult everybody would be able to do it but I doubt the average guy can do a 30 and even less can do a 70 bell.
@id0stuff seems taking the work off your muscles and putting it on joints is bad. yeah the getting up and sitting down is the hard part thats kinda my point when you have a arm down it lets you have that added stability and locking dissapates the weight lol man you just made me break out my weight vest so i could have a 60 lb weight and locking it out is easy im forced to say locking out or using your spare arm is cheating. locked i dont feel it in my body as opposed to really lifting it
@narezul don't know what to say then, either you are doing the exercise wrong or the weight is too light for you, post a vid of that 60lb getup so I can check it out maybe? The weight is supposed to be dissipated through your body.
@id0stuff oh lordy, i dont think you get it, and ive already got video up of a double turkish, i may put up the 60 using the proper cheat form tomorrow, but this is what it was... my muscles werent enough to do it... but when i lock out my arm and using my other one for balance and stability it became possible, but i found myself balancing and trying to get the feel of the weight to go through my body because the weight was too much for my muscle and thats what youre supposed to be working out
@id0stuff to be honest i dont care to do turkish get ups using a balancing arm and locking, its cheating your muscles of the work your going for, when you do a get up with no arm and not locking is when you really feel your whole arm and body and waist activate. i would say im doing it more right then all the videos on youtube along with not putting unneeded weight on my joints
@id0stuff well just did 1 60lb turkish getup "cheating" lol or "properly" and ill say not as easy as i thought but the fact is i couldnt have done it if it was my way
Great explanation of the two different techniques, Steve! I'm definitely happy to have found this explanation. Thanks! Just put up 95lbs with a barbell each arm using the variation
This looks like a very dynamic exercise that challenges several muscle groups. I do not own any kettlebells. What would the difference be if I used dumbells instead?
Using dumbbells is a great alternative (especially when the alternative is not doing the exercise). I don't think I get as much challenge to my shoulders, but I get the same workout for the rest of my body.
@mrclancydog The handles on the kettlebell allow you to have a lot more control especially if your attempting the exercise for the first time. With a dumbell you can find it tilting to one side which can be very dangerous if you aren't very experienced. I'd suggest practising on light dumbells.
thanks for this! I've been trying to work out why I've seen all these video's that differ from how I learn't it (Punch Gym minute of strength) Lunge style is good! But I prefer pushing from hip!
The turkish get up works your core as well as your shoulders and generally increases your strength a great deal. Its an important part of my routine and has helped me a lot with my functional strength.

i did this today and it was brutal. This kind of workout is better to me rather then being on machines.

@jshoekid i say he isnt doing them right. putting one hand down is cheating hardcore. im about to make a double turkish get up video with 30s
narezul 1 year ago
@narezul not really, that is how it's done, there's no cheating here, keep in mind that's a 70lb bell, it's a tough sob.

@id0stuff seeing how much weight you can balance on your arm and locking it out isnt terribly impressive either. thats also cheating

so does this form hav equal effects as the normal lunge style??
im trying to figure out which will b better to do

This variation is easier. It works well if your shoulders aren't very good at supporting your whole body weight.

Steve is an awesome teacher. And he makes it look easy: talking though the whole thing while using a 32kg, (70.5lb), kettlebell!
This is from the Encyclopedia of Kettlebell Lifting with Steve Cotter. Highly recommended!
