Doctors go to 4 years of undergrad school, 4 years of medical school, and another 3-8 years of residency before they start to make a full salary. They make so much money because (1) they provide a very valuable service; (2) because there is a huge shortage of doctors; and (3) because they have tons of school debt by the time they finally finish.

Doctors get paid well because they provide a valuable service. The fact is General Practioners keep their prices as low as they can, its the county and state hospitals that mark up care 1000%. Yup, good old government services that are poorly managed and running up rates for everybody, and you want more!?!?
MDs also get paid a lot because they have invested so much money (and time) in the form of their schooling. When you rack up a student loan of that size and sacrifice 12 year of your life before you can even ply your trade, you deserve compensation commensurate with your sacrifices. If we want to blame high healthcare costs on someone, maybe it should be the professors who taught them who also wanted to get paid for all the time/effort they also spent on their own education.

Personal experience - government driven health care sucks -- lived in France and in the UK ... both are deficient at best .. if you want quick medical attnetion from a doctor in the UK .. .just say 'I'll go Private" .. which means I will pay the 60 pounds required so I can get to visit the doctor within a few hours instead of a week or so ... i cant believe i supported this nut. EVERY DAY on my home from work (a government job, mind you) i have toi drive by a family of 6. sitting on their fat asses, drinking beer. no matter what time of day i ride by there thats what theyre doing.

He believes the Government can choose better than you, so all Americans get the same level of health care, employment, education and jobs. It is part of his reparations plan to ensure poor minorities get what the rich have.

I lived in the Kansas for 4 years before coming back to Europe.
I remember going into the ER once with my 2 year old son. High fever, but it turned out nothing serious. They gave me some high dose of Ibuprofen. Saw the bill later on...they charged the insurance $75 for the Ibuprofen ....

You can earn a doctorate any time you want! Go to to school for 12 years, and then YOU can make six figures. After I finished I had 120 K in student loans, getting off lucky.

Doctors go to 4 years of undergrad school, 4 years of medical school, and another 3-8 years of residency before they start to make a full salary. They make so much money because (1) they provide a very valuable service; (2) because there is a huge shortage of doctors; and (3) because they have tons of school debt by the time they finally finish.

Doctors get paid well because they provide a valuable service. The fact is General Practioners keep their prices as low as they can, its the county and state hospitals that mark up care 1000%. Yup, good old government services that are poorly managed and running up rates for everybody, and you want more!?!?

MDs also get paid a lot because they have invested so much money (and time) in the form of their schooling. When you rack up a student loan of that size and sacrifice 12 year of your life before you can even ply your trade, you deserve compensation commensurate with your sacrifices. If we want to blame high healthcare costs on someone, maybe it should be the professors who taught them who also wanted to get paid for all the time/effort they also spent on their own education.

Personal experience - government driven health care sucks -- lived in France and in the UK ... both are deficient at best .. if you want quick medical attnetion from a doctor in the UK .. .just say 'I'll go Private" .. which means I will pay the 60 pounds required so I can get to visit the doctor within a few hours instead of a week or so ... Money talks! Govt walks!

For as long as you are not too old - because then Money talks again, and you guess it,. you're stuck to your chair at home, no operation and no wheelchair. Case in point my uncle passed away a month ago because at 86 he was deemed too old to justify the cost of cleaning or replacing the stint in his leg, died of blood poisoning as he was sent from hospital to hospital until his end , in contrast my US mother in-law had her stints 'roto rooted' and is still walking and alive.

Your stats may be accurate - don't have time to verify - but, I believe we could control the cost in the US if we were to nationalize the attorneys - no more class action suits on medical issues where the attorney gets US $20 million and the poor sob get US $20.00 .. cap the lawyers income ... then the cost of medical malpractice insurance will drop (a few folks out of work again) and the total cost of health insurance can return to affordable - think about it.

We just have more freedom - to insure or not, to self insure - and some don't make correct choices. I prefer it this way. I always had insurance; it's easy to blame "medical bills" on bankruptcy, and it used to be easy to file (the law changed about 2007). But we were talking the *quality* of healthcare, were we not?

that's a wrong way to calculate. Why don't you look at objective stats, expressed in constant US dollars, such as per capita income? Trying to calculate ephemeral "net worth" in diff countries, with diff taxation, is useless. Do you also have 401(k) plan, or an IRA, which in my case is > $500K? Would you include that in net worth calc?

People are forced to buy car insurance too, which couldn't seem fair to you guys. And then people have the OPTION to get health insurance, so those who don't have it end up going to the emergency room when they're in a pickle. Such choices we have here in America!!
