this was an incredible match...it was such a microcosm of Capriati's career--seemingly down and out of it, put somehow pulling herself up and coming out on the top on the other side....this match signaled the end of Hingis's dominance in Grand Slam play...and when she lost at Indian Wells to Hantuchova the next month, I don't think she ever recovered mentally
Agreed David, Hingis game was being well exposed by this era, by Davenport, Williams sisters, Capriati and Seles, they simply hit the ball too hard for her by this stage,
I remember watching this match as well, and it was so typical hingis, this always bothered me about her, she could of been the greatest player ever, but when ever she got down she just gave up!
well I did know that she got cramps, but true champions fight through all of that, what bothered me was that she always did it when she was down, there was always an excuse, A woman of her talent had no excuses, like I said she had the potential to be the best ever! but nevermind it wasnt meant to be for her
I agree so much with you. Hingis is my favorite player and I loved watching her play, but matches like these make me wanna hit her upside the head. She was very lazy at times. She still could have won this match and she definitely should've won more slams than she did.
She would never have been the greatest ever. She simply didn't have the firepower. The power players like Davenport, Capriati, and the Williams sisters forced her into retirement. Plus her serve was weak, and she was too stubborn to improve it.
I remember watching this match. When they said how hot it was gonna get, I knew Capriati had a great chance to win coz I figured she's from taosty Florida!
hingis had such a donk serve

Jennifer Capriati was an awesome player and if she had stayed injury free she would have won more Gran slams - she should come back when fit

You are very uninformed. Hingis got cramps at the end of the 2nd set. She couldn't move.

She had 4 championship points. Cramping or not, she lost a match she had in the palm of her hand.
