If my absurd singing voice was anything like that. If it could achieve such emotion and yet clarity. So much gravel and such varying pitch. Such power. I would quit my job and stay home. Just so I could sing to myself.
Luke on top form, mind you just to hear him introduce a song is magic to me! !Lovely Ewan MacColl song, sung as well as I have heard. Everyone should have a luke Kelly song in their collection!! Lovely pictures of Luke.
Luke taught me this wonderful song in O'Donahue's pub in (I think) Lower Bagot St. Dublin, 1963. He also taught me "The Leavin' of Liverpool" and "I'm a Rover". His partner, Dierdre, listened and admired his wonderful strident, giving, singing. A few days later Dublin was devastated and in tears, on the streets, by the news of President Kennedy's assassination. I don't suppose Luke remembered me but I have never forgotten him. I have never heard such beautiful performances since.
@Lordwarrendale :)) oh lucky you! it seems so hard to comprehend:)) i was born exactly in those days - 21st november '63 - and now as i'm recapturing the Dubliners for myself after some years - the last couple of days these 2 songs are my temp. favourites (Shoals of..and Leaving of..) what voice Luke has in these songs as well! I saw The Dubs twice here in Budapest - but not once Luke:(( they came here only after '84...this IS smthg to regret - if it makes any sence at all. nice sunday to all
This is Luke in his majesty, one of the greatest singers of any genre ever. His singing of Peggy Gordon & Dainty Davy& this song are magic. You know what some of my friends wouldn,t even know who he is, or now who was unfortunatly, miss you Luke, also the other missing members of this great Irish folk group.I saw them years ago at the state Kilburn magic.I write this as an englishman who must get to Ireland sometime for the great golf courses.Went on a bit, sorry.
Luke never sounded better than he does here. It is a wonderful version of a beautiful song sung by a master at the peak of his craft. He sounds so confident and happy.
Dont you count out any ol Irishman with a few stout in him.. I beg to say, he can sing just as well as Luke, Ronny - the lot of them... I heard some of the best songs ever sung when I was a boy...On the potato farm hills of Connemera.. These were the late 40's ( 1940's )
I agree with tim, Luke had a fantastic repretoire of great songs, this rendition by luke expresses his brilliant voice probably more than any of his songs, perhaps The Travelling People is up there too, If i'm being honest all his songs are straight out of the top drawer, The man was a genius, his like will never be seen again, a sorely missed individual, R.I.P. Luke...
This man had the greatest voice ever heard in a folk singer, better than the marvellous Dick Gaughan, Liam Clancy, Bob Dylan, Ewan McColl, all of them.
I like the corries version VERY much. It sounds like a scottish song but those lads dont have the voice that Luke has. Listen to this song around 4 minutes in to really appreciate the voice. I think this is Luke Kellys best song. They are 2 good versions of a great song.
I am glad for you tube for its here I discovered Luke Kelly.Ewan MacColl's songs.I grew up with this music just never paid attention to who the song writers were or Luke or Ronnie.Wonderful stuff thanks ken.
I agree that Luke was very good looking, and from what I have read about his character, it only enhances his good looks, - his generosity, his values, all that. On top of that you have this amazing voice -the people who were close to him were blessed, as are we, being able to still see him and listen to him, albeit via the electronic version.
ffs, amazing powerful presentation of this song. Not sure, think it was a Scottish song, but never have I heard it sang like this. Corries great, Luke simply different class.
I grew up in a New England sea coast town. This song and Luke's rendition sends shivers up my spine as well. It reminds me of my youth and my home along the coast
