In regards to the person telling me that I'm sad. A person simply asked something, and I gave the answer. It's on Redman's website somewhere I'm pretty sure, but I didn't want to seem like a dick and say "Go look on the Redman Website" or "Does it really matter?" You took the matter a bit too far.
The only way your gonna get the swing like redman is by listening to a fuck load of jazz. The level of precision is far too high to do consciously. transcribing is a massive help though!
I think that joshua Redman is one of the greatest tenor saxophone players alive, and I love this composition, but this is not the best version of it I've ever heard..
Great videos mate fantastic. Definatly going in the transcibe bank. I agree with your comment ca4gochops...Mirror it exactly...phrasing...accent...breath control and note cutoffs...I find to get redmans articulation I use mute tongue on the "on beat" (so half tongue on reed) and release on the off beat so the off beat notes are articulated unless the phrasing is altered by redman. Simlar to Stan Getz, Also sound comes from you, internally, i.e singing the note or opening the throat like are.
I would try a more direct approach. Just transcribe or learn a redman solo, or just a passage that you like. Once you get all the notes he is doing, your ears will be more open to hearing his articulations, accents and such. Mirror it!!!
dude Leon, no offence, but its pretty sad that you know that, unless youre his personal mouthpeice consultant or suomething. people need to get away from this whole "equiptment" thing and just PLAY!!!
what instrument do you play guy?? you shouldnt rip on people for taking their equipment seriously. some instruments like saxophones or guitars require constant attention. no problem with that. redman sounds good and people want to emulate that
Im a Jazz Tenor Saxophone major at the New School in New York. My point is that equipment is far less important than a players technique and inner approach to their sound. If I put a "Florida Slant Slig Ottolink with a 110 facing opening" on my horn im sure as hell not going to sound like Redman.
I had a friend named Richard Chen who went to your school, he played alto. I play a tenor just finished nursing school but anyway, i have an important question. how do i practice with a metronome to get that same rhythm as redman or many other modern players ? where is he accenting ? I have been trying to accent on different beats, and im missing something. pls help... thanks
thanks for posting J. Redman is fab and becoming one of the greats.

try and play with emotion. Get angry and dig in like your punching someone.

Agree with you completely.
Art Blakey once said, "Do you play the drums, or do the drums play you? If you could *really* play it wouldn't matter."
The same goes for any instrument.
