  • Whats the normal fov settings?

  • console ----> viewmodel_fov 80

  • spy needs max FOV i think

  • I'm a competitive scout and I use the launch options:

    -novid -console -w 1920 -h 860 -windowed -noborder

This will create a wide aspect ratio and a FOV of roughly 120 degrees. I can recommend everyone who plays medic to use this settings, but soldiers and demos shouldd avoid it.

  • well that was a waste of time. I know how angles work.

  • i use 130 fov

  • my FoV dont stay in 75 i change and the next round change again ;S

  • So, what did we learn?....

That the school system didn't fail you :) Your math is correct, and it shows that the Source engine was made with 4:3 monitors in mind, not 16:10 and 16:9.

Also, that people who play at 4:3 resolutions, or only have a monitor that supports 4:3 resolutions are at a slight disadvantage, but guess we learned that in the first video ;)

  • I'm using 1336x768

Will it be better if I change to a 1600x1200?

  • @adliikhwan280

    the higher the better

  • @TheMostAwesomeHat

D: I should have said YES when my dad bought an LED, higher res screen when he asked if I wanted to change my old screen to it.

  • Actually, we learned a lot. The FoV setting assumes a 4:3 ratio. The difference between a 16:10, and 16:10 ratio screen is superb.

    Essentially, a 16:9 has 33.33% more viewing angle than a 4:3, while a 16:10 has 20% more viewing angle.

Proof of concept: 75 * 1.2 = 90. The original video was obviously recorded at a 16:10 ratio resolution. Superb information; this will help me in my calculations of max mouse sensitivity.

  • = i dont ket

  • Unrelated question, but what is the music you named called?

You guys sure know what music to use with your vids! Makes them even more interesting to watch!

  • amazing....

  • I use 4:3 cause my computer is shit lol

  • What did we learn? Absolutely nothing. It's like high school art all over again! Still an awesome vid, thanks!

  • What did we learn?

    Nothing.

    I lol'd

  • i bought tf2 the day before it was free |:<

  • @2010zombiez L O L

  • @dac13 yeah its funny is it. well fuck you *sob**CRY* its not funny *continues to cry*

  • @2010zombiez Its not like you gave 50 for a new game. Jeez.

  • @NosAway wait a minute.....*facepalms* d'oh

  • @2010zombiez You should be proud for buying the best game ever =)

  • @NosAway yeah thats true thanks for cheering me up *barfs*

  • when u start shooting?

  • I don't get this.. so 1280 x 720 is better?

  • @JellowHD I suppose its better.

In my opinion though its the same. Im used in playing on 4:3 so im not at a disadvantage.

  • @NosAway But wouldn't a 1280 x 720 have more vision around the map?

Well i have a 1280 and i'm fine with it.

  • @JellowHD Im used to move the mouse more frequently left and right, so i dont mind the ''2 and a half squares'' i miss from my vision. If you are fine with your resolution then play with that. The best is what you like. =)

  • @NosAway Well said boyfriend.

  • Does the 16:9 resolution that you used apply to 1920x1080?

  • i hope you know, regardless of what peoeple i think. I love all ur videos

  • in 2.11 i wanted to hit the screen xDDDDDDD

  • Yeah its called WIDESCREEN. lol. Good vid btw

  • Anyone know the title/artist of the awesome song in this video? Or could the video author consider posting it in the video description?

  • Need the name of the song :(

  • how do you change your FOV in the game. I remember in Quake 2 all you had to do is type in console /fov_120 (whatever your fov is), so how do you do it in TF2, please help

  • this video can not compare. When the same amount of inch are compared to 16:9 and 4:3, the 4:3 also has a higher point of view, so you basically compared a smaller screen/resoluion/FOV to a bigger one

  • We learned that 75° is way to little. And 90° is too little too.

FPS should be at a 100° fov MINIMUM for any ratio.

  • What is this song? It's amazing.

  • i wish i could get rid playing with 4:3, but stupid pc gives me a bad framerate.

  • hah the end

  • so wat did we learn? i know the answer I alWAYS WIN!!! (from scout)

  • i cant change my fov

  • and 16:10? my monitor is 16:10

and, a 800x600 monitor has less FOV than a 1024x768?

  • what song is this?

  • I learn that the 4:3 SUCKS!

  • My god, its brilliant!

  • Now I hate myself for having a 4:3....

  • give me the song name now lol

  • how i can change fov?

  • I DONT GET WAT IS THIS

  • What if my screen resolution is 1280x800(16:10)?

  • 16:9 FTW

  • I wonder what the angle would be for a 1366x768 resolution...

  • whats the name of the song?

  • What is with 16:10 1280x1024??

  • i use 2:1 (16:8) what does that mean :D

also i cant seem to get 16:10 :(

  • I have a 4:3 LCD at the moment, but I can play the game at 16:10 by running it windowed (using a wide resolution with fullscreen squashes the picture).

Do you think it would be worth it to play like this?

  • what if your using a modified screen?(mines 17 and my friends 19 inches)

  • I'm surprised that you haven't figured this out yet. FOV is measured via the users vertical resolution, assuming a 4:3 ratio. This is why when you use 4:3 you get the advertised angle. Using a wider horizontal resolution doesn't change the calculated FOV, and this is why 16:9 users get a much higher horizontal FOV, and why 48:9 users like myself get something like 152 degrees of horizontal FOV.

  • makes me feel like i need widescreen

  • In the server config you can set the FOV, valves basic configs are set to 90 so that pretty much confirms you are right.

  • What song is this?

  • lol one question how does a game, filled with mentally unstable neanderthals with hilarious clumsy deaths occuring like crazy, and math can benefit me from putting things on fire and axe-ing em with my aweshome axe of pawnage.? :p

  • so what did we learn? that a 4:3 screen has 75 degrees fov and a 16:9 screen has 90. =)

  • Bahahaha... that was awesome: 'what did we learn.... absolutly nothing'. Gave me a good belly laugh! well worth my time to watch.

  • I like the model fov set to 60 cause you can see more of your gun :D

  • Oh, I get it!

Valve's FOV settings are set in degrees, but this degree measure is only applicable in 4:3 screen ratios!

  • fov_desired , and you're all set. Although you can manipulate with 16:9 resolutions to get a bigger fov , but you don't really benefit from that.

  • Guys! a few comments below a guy (cunnelatio) said that 16:10 was 100 degrees, which i dont care, but what he meant was 1:10 degrees! dont put a thumbs down on his comment! how dare u !?

  • how does someobody change the tf2 Fov?

  • Sorry if you answered this already, but what's the name of the song in this video?

  • just use your screen res in the game.. looks alot better then haveing the biggest you can choose.. like many ppl do for some reason

  • 16:10 should be giving you about 100 degrees, 90 is zoomed in

  • 16:10 Should not be giving you any further view distance horizontally but rather vertically

  • take a moment of your day to re read what you just said and think about why making a wider screen would result in a greater vertical viewing angle

if you reach the same conclusion, start over

  • What I meant was 16:10 compared to 16:9

  • now what if he did that with fov_desired 90

  • whats the music in the video?

  • absolutely NOTHING!

  • Say it again!

    WAR!

    UNGH!

    YEAH!

    What is it good for?

    Absolutely NOTHING!

  • Actually I was struggling about rather I should get a widescreen because I need one more screen to do my engineering stuff.... Thx for this video I got one more solid reason to buy one in this afternoon!

  • We have learned that having widescreen is better.

O wait, we already knew that.

  • We learned that the angle selected in FoV setting is the angle for a 4:3 aspect ratio. The extra horizontal view area with a widescreen display effectively gives you a greater field of view than the selected 75 degrees. If comparing 1680X1050 to 1280X1024, You have 200 pixels of view extra on each side of the 75 degree FoV, which the video shows to come out to an actual 90 degrees.

  • A 90 degree FoV is ideal, correct?

  • @chipmunx you're getting closer: the larger FoV and the larger angle you can see at the screen, the more you see and are aware of your surroundings

  • Do an higher field-of-view increases framerate?

  • I imagine it would decrease your FPS, just because it's drawing more crap on your screen at a time.

  • @chipmunx

I have set my fps to 120 degrees before... it doesnt

  • @chipmunx unless it's a farm

  • @chipmunx don't think so, the fact that everything around you is already drawn and preloaded, if you don't see it it doesn't mean it's not there.

  • @chipmunx Nope, the game renders the whole map, not only the place at where you are looking, so it won't cause you any FPS drop. Also, if you got mor FOV you got less blinds spots, so you are able to see a lot more of what is happening nearby you .

  • @chipmunx No it wouldn't, it wouldn't make a difference. Sections of maps you're on (or the whole map if it isn't optimised properly) are rendered regardless of whether they are on your screen or not.

  • @chipmunx bigger angle means u actually can see much more without rotating camera, its very useful, and TF2 isnt crysis even cheap graphic cards can provide high fps

  • @chipmunx yeah it does

but not by a lot if you have a good pc

  • Not necessarily ideal, but it's the highest you can do in TF2. I personally prefer 120 for most shooters. 90 is better than 75 though, yes.

  • Now imagine how much you could see if you used 90 Fov

  • Very nice swiftkaratechop reference

love the vids keep it up

    i sub'd :D

  • What about 16:10 ratio?

  • 16:10 is identical in width, which is the important thing in FOV. The screen will just have more height pixels.

    EG. 1280x800 instead of 1280x768

  • lol

  • i <3 these tests so much, keep up the good work =DD

  • Can you do a FOV test for 5:4 ratios such as 1280x1024 please?

  • no

my Fire and Kritz Arrows test took me 10 straight hours to make, and you commented that i didnt need to do those tests.

so im gonna have to say no to your request. some asshole's just gonna say that it doesnt really matter anyway.

  • @christianmalazarte Nice, absolutely nothing! xD 10 hours for real!? Damn...

  • i am getting sloppy! i spelled resolution = resoluion

!!! garrr... im not redoing it...

  • lazy :P

    lol

nice job tho - takes patience to make things like this :)

  • yeap probably, im measuring from the top view tho, tried measuring the side view if fov pertained to the top to bottom angle. but none of the numbers matched

  • absolutely nothing xDDDDDD

Your videos are incredibly professional :D I always enjoy watching them

  • lmao absolutely nothing :D

  • Is it possible to achieve letterboxed widescreen on a 4:3 monitor? (As in using a widescreen resolution on a 4:3 monitor, but having it morphed to look correct, save for the minor annoyance of unused areas on the top/bottom of the screen) The fact that widescreen users get such significant peripheral vision drives me mad. It's a huge advantage.

  • Sure thang, Bro!!

  • cool vid.

  • so what we learn?

    absolutely nothing...

    LOOOOOOL

    nice video..

  • I play in 640x480 windowed mode. Although my comp could probably do wide- and fullscreen, but phh who needs all this new fancy stuff.

  • play on fulscreen :) and on your resolution, you get so much better performance on your gameplay

  • This "awkward" WASD+Mouse scheme is the default layout for almost every PC game.

It is also superior to the slow/clumsy analog sticks.

As for TF2 on the 360:

    Enjoy your incredibly delayed updated.

That is if you get them at all.

    Lol.

  • so what fov do I have if my mode is 16:10 and resolution is 1680 x 1050, when playing tf2?

  • the default is always 75, it doesnt matter what your screen ratio is.

maybe your asking about wat the actual FOV angle is? its probly close to 90 degrees as well

  • so...when i want a high viewfield, i have to turn on the 16:9 /16:10 mode and an fov setting of 75 ? or is it more when i do a fov setting of 90 ?

  • when you're at 16:9, and you have your FOV setting at default which is 75, your actual fov is 90 degrees, so if you change it to 90 that would be 105 approx.

  • ah okay thank you now i m smarter ;-)

  • Come on! I've already explained to you, that you're wrong! =/

  • Do you know about 16:10? Because I'm running at 1920 by 1200 and I'd like to know.

  • These are really well laid out and informative. I like em :D

  • First!

love your vids man keep coming
