THERE IS NOTHING LIKE HEARING YOU KNOW HOW TO LOVE ME I A NEW YORK OR NORTH JERSEY KLUB ON A RICHARD LONG & ASSOCIATES SOUND SYSTEM. THE SOUND OF EVERY INSTRUMENT COMES ALIVE AND THE VOCALS ARE DREAM LIKE INSTANT EUPHORIA!!!!!
Such a talented and gifted artist who never achieved the level of stardom she deserved (like Whitney Houston in her heyday). It's so sad that she felt the need to take her own life. I hope in death she found the peace and love she couldn't find here on Earth while she was with us. RIP, beautiful lady!!!
Thank you ashR66 for posting this feel good body song by the late Ms Phyllis Hyman. I was/am such a fan, she could hum the phone book and I would download that to my ipod, she is such an incredible loss, and is sorely missed. Great song, keep the toe-tapping going.
This Hyman cut takes me back to my first exposure to her. I was in a nightclub in Miami (Pre South Beach era). The dj remixed this for about 20 minutes. The dance floor was JAMMED PACKED the entire time!!! Her untimely death left a void in the industry. Mad props for uploading this gem of an artist.
This song has everything, sumptuous arrangement, unforgettable chorus, spiritual vocal performance. Makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up every time I hear it, even after 30 years. Just beautiful, brings a tear to my eye. 2 people also have no experience of life.
I saw her perfom this song on stage in 1980. I thought this is the most sexy woman on the planet. She was singing and dancing through this song(shows how long ago this was) That is the image I hold to this day of that amazing beautiful woman.
I listen to this and dream that Phyllis Hyman is still alive. And Teena, and Michael, that 911 never happened,AIDS never happened, and the world is like it was. This was my jam. Before the whole "disco sucks" attacks...
When I hear this record I see my mama struting down the hall way of the Frontier Hotel or at Cameo Coney Island with that I am that woman expression that women of the 70's had.Rest in Peace Willie Pearl Jones....I Love and Miss you Mama!!!
Phyllis Hyman was a beautiful and talented woman that you do not see the likes of today. With her soft, sexy, smooth style of singing would make any man's heart flutter. I too grew up with this music and I miss it greatly but I also smile when I hear today because she takes me back to a better time musically. Phyllis you are missed and you will always be apart of my life. Thank you for your music.
@2009Denisem This song really pushes the buttons for me, could honestly listen to this over and over again, what a voice, what a song, another song sprinkled with magic..There's no denying it!!!!! @jman4208 Hi Jason....I had a wee listen to Teena Maria singing "I need your lovin" as i have to admit it does sound similar to Phyliss Hyman's "You know how to love me" i will say Phyliss has a slightly more powerful voice.....but to being honest...both crackin' songs....Graham

@THRILLAKILLA187 Well spotted, guess i was getting a bit sleepy when i typed my comments..Thank you to ashR66 for posting.......This is a song that i really could listen to over and over.
When I Was In Film School Back In The Early 80'S, I Was Asked To Deliver A Video Tape To Ms. Hyman's Apartment On West 57th Street In New York City; I Never Got To Meet Her, One Of My Instructors, A Close Friend To Phyllis, Came To The Door And Took The Tape; To My Disappointment!!!!! I Loved Phyllis' Voice; I Had A Crush On That Gorgeous Tall And Beautiful Gift Of A Woman! It Was So Sad To Hear That She Committed Suicide, So Sad Indeed! R.I.P Phyllis.....
The first time I heard this song many years ago I never thought that it would be so apropos to my relationship with my beautiful daughter! It is so profoundly true of the love and respect we feel for one another. How wonderful to have this special being in my life that truly knows how to love me and celebrate US! This had nothing to do with a romantic love like I originally thought. Little did I know that it would describe the most amazing love of my life.....that of my daughter!
@2009Denisem Aw...It years since i heard this, id forgotten how good this is, i do not even have it on a CD.....but hearing it again bring all the good times back, wish i could turn back time, simply fantastic track and a great singer, what year was it 1984????
No one does her justice--HANDS UP & DOWN TO OUR BELOVED MS. PHYLLIS HYMAN! I was often told in my 20's that I strongly resembled her. What a compliment then and now!!!!!! Sad to say that we as women still do not value our STRENGTH, COURAGE, AUTHORITY AND YES, POWER!!!!!!!!!! LET US LEARN FROM THE EXPERIENCES OF OUR PAST AND PAY HOMAGE TO OUR YOUNG
GIRLS AND WOMEN!!!!!!! GOD BLESS US ALL!!!!!!!!!! july,1656
There are no words to describe the pain that I feel when I think of Phyllis and her ending her life for whatever her reason. I have to say that I too suffer from the highs and lows that she spoke about and I do understand how you can feel useless, and beat down. However this woman was very beautiful, very talented and was well loved by her fans. She just didn't know it. Maybe no one ever reached her and touched her soul. All I can say is Rest In Peace Phyllis. You were thee best!
@HippieNiecey no truer words have been spoken....and you just know that when you have those days when you're feeling "useless and beat down", that you have worth in this world, otherwise you would not have been created. Above all, when it feels like no one cares for you, remember the tragic story of Ms. Hyman and come to the realization that, like Phyllis, you are cared for by more than you know...i wish the best for you, girl. :)
@yvetteblalock Thanks so much for the post! You sound like an awesome person with a very good mind set. You are so right. I agree with everyword you wrote. Thanks for caring. It truly means alot. I think of Phyllis always. We all cared for her more than she knows. Always .................
@HippieNiecey i'm just happy you saw it!i wasn't sure if you were considering you made that comment like 2 months ago. i'm glad it brought joy to your heart. it honestly made my day when i read it today. :)
@HippieNiecey I so get what you mean about how you feel about Phyllis. I love her songs and they bring me joy but also make me sad becauuse she should still be here being adored and praised. She should have had several Grammys,Tony's, and been as appreciated as Aretha,Patti, etc. Hopefully she has found peace
@2009Denisem..You got it baby!!!..now my computor chair just broke hehehehe..these were the days indeed..I come from a rural area like as i one shop the bush and sea..nuffin like NYC!!! but we did have the music and them discos..'thank god its friday" haha..love this thanx
Absolutely no one was capable of singing with this woman, Phyllis Hyman! This era of singers are nowhere close to the smooth, silky, sexy, and skills of this woman. she was pure! I grew up on this music and miss it dearly.
@MrEbonyman I truly agree. Her voice was a prime example of being gifted from GOD. Years ago I wondered why she was not getting the acclaim she so deserved. From reading her auto (Strength of a Woman) I suspect she was blackballed. I believe she became bitter and possibly felt overlooked over the years and could not embrace her as she needed. I thought she was great,.
01 Oct 2009....look who is on board here, Producers- James Mtume & Reggie Lucas, basically the core of the group Mtume, plus Keyboards- Hubert Eaves,
Bass- Basil Fearington, Backing Vocals- Gwen Guthrie, J. Mtume, R. Lucas, Syndi Jordan, Tawatha, and String And Horn Arrangements by Wade Marcus. Is it any wonder that Phyllis turned in an outstanding performance on this song. I bought this album new in 1979, and have loved it since, especially, "Under Your Spell". God Bless You, Phyllis.
That album cover leaves me speechless. Phyllis's eyes were so penetrating, like they were gazing into the depths of your'e soul! R.I.P. Angel you are truly missed.
When I read these comments I cringe. The misuse of the english language and the non-use of punctuations should make a dead english teacher turn over in his/her grave...Come on folks, find someone to proofread your stuff before posting. For the sake of literacy..
More than anything, people who enjoy the music (a majority of the time) post the comments, I am sure the way most people type is very different from how they would write a letter
@ashR66 Amazingly, no. I've been a networking geek for 35 years, and typically, newbies write unintelligibly, especially poorly educated kids new to the net. My daughter is 17 and is almost anal about fully spelling out words in texts, and the thinking among her peers is that people who use words like "dat" "ur/yr" and misspelled obscenities are new to the technology and don't realize they look foolish. It's ok, they don't yet realize this stuff is permanent and in ten years they will cringe. B)
@flybetty69 As an articulate and eloquent speaker and writer, I have very serious issues with your judgemental and offensive comment. Folks have the right to express and voice their feelings, thoughts, ideas, and opinions as they feel. Kudos to all of you who no matter grammatical or political correctness expressed your feelings!
@flybetty69 I can relate to what you are saying...Even though you are online and commenting on an artist and their music , I think you should be articulate with your wording. This artist was a very special lady and she sung from the heart, as you can hear it in her voice. She's very much missed!!
@flybetty69 Indeed. Of course, you should remember to cap-up the E in English, while punctuation does not need an "s" on the end of it. And you're missing a comma after "comments" in the first sentence. But ho-hum - we can't all be perfect, eh?
@Dancer810 haha funny!!! i thought the same thing..ppl will bitch about ANYTHING on youtube?!lol..i guess this attack is bettr than the rest of the HATEFUL things i see on YT..i guess flybetty69 (hmmm? well...we know what SHE likes to do in the sack...lol..but oh ...NO, she was "born in 1969, that's her defense if questioned about that..lol) i guess that Ms FLYBETTY69 hasn't seen one of the MILLIONS of thug and rap videos or just stupid thug videos w/ ppl who REALLY cant read or write "English"
R.I.P. Phyllis Hyman. When I listen to this song." You Know How to Love Me" I think about her live. That she went througth. It was Bipolar and suffered bad depression. Most of her songs is depression that she sing. It's a lost. I will always miss her. Great songwriter and singer all times.
Sad thing is, many genius musicians led sad lives. I wonder if they had the choice of creating great music and being depressed or being okay but leading a normal life, can we automatically say they'd choose the former?
And yes the Goldmine so nice them days this music this song seeing her live was just the best how can all this time pass yet still this song is full of happiness & Love Thank you Angel for the good times
She was bipolar and suffered from server depression. She commited suicide. Bipolar is a real disease. If you ever hear anyone in your life speak in depression, please take them serious and try to help them get help. Take care.
Her voice was and is so damn beautiful, I have the cd of this record and when i get a bad day at work i come home and turn my 500 watt hi fi system up full tilt and just dance my troubles away to her soulful sexiness, i love her. and miss her so much. She was a great one taken before her time. Got damn record industry didn't know or didn't want to market her in the so-called markets for her gifted ass voice.

@flybetty69 OK, if you're so "uppity" on the language, how come you don't capitalize "English"??? It is written with a capital E, you know!
