  • i love this song. i just cant help but wonder what bono's father's response would have been if he had heard it before he had died. its so sad. Bono sings like an angel.

  • great song !!

  • U2 wrote "Miami"

  • I lost my mum just a month before i first heard this song and it al;ways reminds me of her. God bless you wee Mo.x

  • just great , thank God I still got my DAD , but i really like the song

  • Notice the edge changes colours of shirts...very suspicious. :P

    I love U2!!

  • this song rocks, just lost my dad back in nov 08

  • why arent there any great songs like this on there new album, jesssus this album and All That You cant leave behind were mint and there new album stinx

  • 1.take ur middle finger and put on ur nose.

    2.say a name of someone u like.

3.that person will ask u out or say they love u tomarrow.

    4. heres the thing copy and paste to 2 other vids

  • Bono wrote this about his dad. His dad was dying at the time. However, this song could be sung about anybody whom you were very close to at the time of their death. The person doesn't even have to be a relative. It can be a friend. For instance, I happen to dedicate this song to my sixth grade math teacher. She was my favorite teacher. She died of breast cancer two years later. She was only thirty-two when she died. This song makes me think of her.

  • You can hear Bono's voice break at the end while singing the last "your own," and sniffing say, "Dad, *sniff* I miss you."

It's so heartbreaking it defies description.

  • u2's music is as big as bono's heart no 1 gives more to a tune ,u2 capture raw emotion for us to trip on !!boom shakti power!!

  • the LOOK edge gives bono at 1:15 ...such feeling expressed for his friend!

  • i know! such a good friend..

  • thats cool that you pointed that out lazarush1980

  • I wish he would stop whining about all this emotional shit.

Just kidding. Good tune! Bono is my hero.

  • It was written to his father while he was dying. Some concerts he chooses not to sing it because it is too emotional. There is no speculation...it is documented. My Dad died the same time as his so I totally know about the history of the song.

  • The best live version of this song is by far the SNL version. It's so hard to find, though.

  • lol yea its about his father.. i wouldnt want a song about my father dieing to be played at my wedding

  • The song isnt about his father dying..he was writing it while his was father for his dad. As for having it as a wedding song its beautiful. Just because you know the artists meaning...dont let it change your own

  • The song isnt about his father dying..he was writing it WHILE his father was dying.Notice the present tense, As for having it as a wedding song it'd b beautiful. Just because you know the artists meaning...dont let it change your own

  • no this song is about his father dying. just because you change the meaning for yourself doesn't change the meaning of the song. but you're perfectly entitled to make it mean whatever the hell you want.. you're just fucking delusional if you play it at your wedding

  • amazing lyrics

  • the kinda thing to play at your wedding

  • if you knew the actual meaning of the song you wouldnt want this played at your wedding. its a song for his father because he died and bonos saying how much he reminds himself of his father

  • You're the reason I sing... The most amazing lyrics and sentiment ever. I have followed this band since the early 80's and thought WOWY, Running..., etc were the best but there can be no question... Sometimes is and always will be the greatest track ever.

    Surely no-one will disagree???

  • muito legal, the best

  • Awesome! This song live under Honoulu sky can actually make u cry.

  • I simply just love that song

  • dude i dont wanna cry, best group ever, i dont know why but this song is amazing is.. perfect

  • can anyone have this lyric of this wonderful song?

  • only bono sings live, music is on playback !!!!

Edge needs a 12 string to play this song properly, usually a Rickenbacker 330/12.

In this video he uses a Gibson 6 strings which he usually plays on Crumbs and which is not good for Sometimes. really crap.

  • Well, it's an Epiphone (not a Gibson), and trust me, it's NOT crap. It's quite a nice instrument.

  • Epiphone or Gibson this is not the point. The point is that i am extremely disappointed to see such sh1t from U2.

  • I honestly have no idea what you're getting so worked up about. What do you see as the problem exactly?

  • i see as a problem Edge, Larry and Adam in playback

  • shut up and appreciate the song.

  • it's a vintage epiphone casino, that can be compared to old gibsons, it's not the reissue that it's not that good

  • AMAZING

  • has anyone else noticed that edge's shirt is white and changes to complete black at 1:24?!

  • haha yes i saw it funny

  • I noticed that too...wtf

  • Well if you look closer you can see that he has a black shirt underneath that white one so it's not that fantastic.

  • uhm remove these two comments please

  • mars lol

  • where is it?

  • does any one know if there bringing another album

  • March 3, 2009.

  • epiphone casino, right??

that's not the guitar he uses for this song, I think this is a playback, could I be right?

  • it is all live...they are amazing!

  • it is live. well i think maybe the music is pre-recorded as in the album version but the vocals are live. great all the same. bono's a legend

  • U2 is brilliant. wish i could be like them:(

  • beautiful*

  • at 3.58, Bono sings "And it's you when I don't pick up the phone" instead of "And it's you who makes it hard to let go." I think the Edge gets it right.

  • Bono and the guys are geniuses, no question about it.

  • grate song! dore Kiss

  • It's wonderful!!! thx doremi5002 for send me this video 5*

  • long live u2!

  • This is the best version of the song on youtube ;)

  • i LOVE bono ! And the whole of u2 !

  • I love the lyrics, and bonos voice for sure!!

  • I try to play it, but I cant get through the song without crying....rocks my soul! FANTASTIC!

  • Why not? Whats wrong with being emotional?

  • IRISHHAMMER1: I think that's a great thing to admit to because this is a song built to express emotion, it's about Bono's dead father for cryin out loud! Cool you admit it here!

    I LOVE BONO & U2 !!!

  • THanks, it touches close to home, and for anyone with troubles with their father.

The turmoil, unspoken words, letdown, and regret.

  • IRISHHAMMER1: God bless ya, man. It's a song about a universal theme. And it's a whole different take on love - it's ballsy because it admits that love isn't perfect.

    Wish ya the best, peace!

  • i hear ya dude , i never had problems with my dad , but i do miss him (passed away)and everytime i hear this song i get tears and goosebumps especailly on 3:14 godbless dude

  • This clearly was the studio music but Bono and Edge sung it live. Unusual for them to not want the whole thing played live. They enjoy the unpredictability (is that a word?) There was probably some reason out of their control (knowing them). Still rocks though.

  • It's only Bono singing live.

  • hrvyklly: Not sure what you mean by only??! This is a wonderful song, so emotive. I love it!

    & I love Bono & U2, yeah!!

  • He means that the music isn't live. Of course it's en beautiful song, but the music is the same as the album version. Look for an ohter live version of this song and you'll hear the difference.

  • o.k, gotcha ;D

  • It is live. This isn't the same as the album version.

Gosh they really are that good that you can't tell thedifference inbetween the studio version and live version!

  • Thanks ;), i heard this song first time today, and i am already in love with it :)

  • I would also like to add that they were playing live. They played miracle drug twice as they werent happy with how it sounded first time

  • great song! I love it!

  • awesome song, he sing for his dad, very touching

  • u know u2 did a duet of i've got you under my skin with sinatra.

  • yes, it"s really good, send it me, if you like

  • its on utube.

  • This song is so beautiful. I really love it, it makes me cry but i love it!!!! and it's a perfect performance, Bono sings so emotionally... I think he's a genius and i love him <3

  • this song makes me cry.:''(..

  • What a song, it brings tears to my eyes same as walk on, when I think about the people I've lost, thanx U2 for the music, thanx Bono for the lyrics

  • 3:10 to 3:30 - I get shivers down my spine..... ah... ;}

    I LoVE THIS SONG. <3 U2 Forever!

  • Oh i so agree with that, he has to be in a trance when he belts that out, the whole emotion of the song is built up to the point of him needing his dad on that part

  • This promotional push by U2 is actually a two fold push, firstly into the semi-established u2 music market in the UK and secondly to enrapture a new generation. (ie 12 year olds plus). Some people in the uk like u2 but most are unaffected, for me this is a sign of not having listened and old style anti irish sentiment (dead thank god!). I am irish but i have spent some years in the uk. anyway it seems to have worked if you look at the amount of u2 uk websites that have appeared since 2004. PEACE

  • long live bono

  • U2 are the best. I just hate it when they go on shows like thsi and dont't actually play the instruments

  • so their miming? I just don't think so, the only time they've mimed was early 80's on top of the pops, and that was miming to a live recorded track, you can hear it Bono's voice he is not miming here.

  • I could not make it without u2... i'm always in awe, by what they put forth..

  • just knowing he is singing for father and living his fathers wish is incredibel

  • I was kinda disappointed when U2 started appearing on shows like CD:UK and Top of the Pops etc after years of not bothering. Their absence may have been snobbery on their part, but it kinda seperated them from most other acts. The irony is that most of these chart shows have now been axed.

  • as bono said, if you love your music, you want to communicate it and have as many people listen to it. same way with directors and their movies. it's pointless to work so hard on something, and they not share it with the world.

  • Definitely one of the best U2 songs ever! I posted covers of "With Or Without You" and "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own," and it would be great to get feedback on them!

  • It's true U can try 2 make it on ur own that's not easy

  • U2 is really legendary men i hope i can go in 2008 to concert in holland or otherwise i go to another country for that concert;)

  • Yes that was another great song of U2. Ok guys still the best rock'n roll band in the with your new album in 2008! U2 FOREVER the greatest!!!!

  • Great !!!!

  • When I was a kid I never thought I'd ever listen to U2, They are better live. This song brings a tear to my eye, really. Just Legendary.

  • I'd love to be able to sing this to my Dad, but He died way long ago, so I dedicate this to him.. This is for you, Dad! xx

  • U2 are one of the only bands who consistently sound better live than on album, it is quite impressive. I think they are great, and this is coming from some one who is kind of an indie snob!!

  • wonderful!

  • and it's you when i don't pick up the phone (8)

  • hey **B**, sometimes i see you as the only reasong to be alive. how do you like them apples???

  • Love **B**

  • It is the best versoin of "SYCMIOYO" on the stage! I did not like the LIVE versoins during the Vertigo tour! for the 1st time i prefer to listen to the album version or the Live one! but this one is changing my mind!

  • *wipes tear away* beautiful

  • Greatest band that has ever lived on this world.

  • u2 is just so frigging great.

  • u2 live the best

  • beautiful song and probz ma fave U2 song off all time!

  • i feel likewise!

  • Funny mistake - when Edge sing something else and Bono something else. Bono sung third time: 'when I don't pick up the phone'.

  • My favorite song, from my favorite album. Their work just keeps evolving. Brilliant. No other word necessary. Bono opens his soul about our fathers. And the Edge's melody-- a tapestry of genius. Watch his DVD interview. He's got so much humility describing his creative process for this masterpiece. He makes the world proud.

  • what the hell is garvess talking about.

  • EDGE LOVE

  • EDGE

  • awesome!!!

  • I am right when I say U2 fans have good stuff in them

  • They say that "if you think you can do everything on your own you have a heart of stone. So if you need help or something else say so dont be afraid to say that. And one more thing buddys cimes and go friens last forever if you treat them well

  • his dad sang opera songs, thats the reason for the lyric, duh!

  • That is a very touching song, full of emotion! I totally agree with reno11563, it is amazing that Bono sang that night after night on tour out of love for his father! That is a real man!

  • really great vokal and song :)

  • if you've ever had a loved one in distress, you can appreciate the depth of this song - the lyrics - for me, it came along just when i needed it - better yet - when my loved one needed it. thank you a thousand times for putting the emotion, and yes, the pain, to music.

  • esta de no mames

  • you're the reason why the opera is in me .. Bonos father took him to his first sing lesson, that's why he sings it.

  • Truth will set Africa Free. Natuarl, native African IQ = 70 (seventy).

    Well-known fact in academic writings.

Do search in google for African IQ of 70 (seventy).

Read "IQ and Wealth of Nations" book

It's the Truth. All the the aid (money) in the world will Not help Africa.

Only by raising IQ above 70 will africa develop.

The poorest place on Earth is Africa. IQ =70. Root cause of poverty.

Truth, the whole Truth. Truth will set Africa free. African IQ = 70

  • this is an very racist thing to say...i really doubt it has anything to do with iq the fact that africa is poor.

  • In actual fact the standardised IQ test are designed very poorly. They are bised towards people who are enlish speaking, particularly north american people. They don't say much a bout someones potential in North america so in africa it is an almost totally negligable statistic. It's like in canada when they first tested the IQ of the natives there. They decided that most of the population was mentally delayed. When in actual fact it was the one's who made the tests that were delayed.

  • Great song. If I'm right Bono wrote this song for his father...

  • Such a personal and emotional song. Bono sings it very well

  • It's amazing that Bono went on stage night after night on tour and sang this song out of love for his father. That's a real man.

  • I mean...it's so beautiful that he sing a song for his dad...man...I love it

  • Eh... Instruments sound like they're played back. But oh well. They played it, they can play it back. Still them playing. lol. Bono's still singing for real, though. Great version! :)

  • Okay. I love U2. If you don't agree that U2 rules, then get out of here. U2 IS THE SHIT.

  • Best song ever?

  • This song makes me cry

  • It should make you cry, Bono sang this song at his dad's funeral.

  • I love especially the guitar in this song!!! This is so good:) U2's great!!!

  • All for colloborate. Check out footage of studio work putting things together. Everyone has equal say. Change that, don't like that, up tempo this, down tempo that. They do not have one member, they have all members equally agreeing to building what we finally hear. They are all equals.

  • i <3 this song!!!

  • "i don't need

i don't need to hear you say

that if we weren`t so alike

you`d like me a whole lot more"

...what more is there to be said? ...just... so honest, so right!

  • Bono is Hot!!

  • The original music video version is much better

  • SOMENTIMES

  • U2 SOEMTIMEENS

  • Fuaa las plataformas q se mando Bono!! jaja

    Excelente!

  • I've got two words for you:

    The Edge.

Bono's a great frontman, but without The Edge, there is no U2. He pretty much invented their whole sound.

  • one of the best songs of the history of U2!!!what sound

  • beautiful

  • uncredibble

  • i can write, but not today. maybe tomorow. something with my mood today, i don't know what, maybe after these late days news about global warming i feel depresed. but tomorow i'll try.

  • no one today!!! can write a song like Bono

so many classic songs he has written

    a thrue musician,artist ect.

  • Don't forget the rest of the band. They are all fantastic.

  • ladies and gentlemen.. my friend.. Bono.. He can hear me when I sing..

  • beautiful

  • Sir bono... he's the man :)

  • very touching..awesome song

  • beautiful, "listen to me now, i need to let u know, u don't have to go at it alone!"

  • The moon is up and over "one tree hill"...

  • Maravilhoso! :D

  • but a very, very sad song as well :(

  • This is a very, very good song.

  • :') ...such an awesome song

  • viva u2

  • ta buena la rola

  • beautiful.
