Maestro Gavazzeni (I think it is him) says he worked in a new opera with Mario. Ariodante by Nino Rota (later famous for his Fellini soundtracks)! An opera in 19th century style. Maestro G was impressed not only by the "squilo" (ringing sound) beauty of voice and high notes of the promissing young tenor, but by his musicianship too. Maestro also notes MDM's "fanatic" consistancy in his preperation and his artistic conduct.
Upon finishing his studies in Pesaro there was doubt about his Fach. Agents couldnt believe that the only 60Kg person with this big voice can sustain his big sound to the end of a dramatic role! Although Mario says his voice changed with the time. His teacher was Melocchi and his debut was on 20.3.1940 with Cav Rust. in Marche. He was 25.
An anecdote of the war times is that while he was singing Butterfly in Padova american plains started bombing. People started running to all directions to save themselves and he -Mario- too. At some point people see this man dressed as an american officer and run towards him with threatening intentions! Mario realizes then he is still wearing the american officer costume and screams to people "I am Del Monaco! singing Butterfly! Stop! Stop!"
At some point Mario -music student by then- substituted an ailing tenor in Traviata (in Senigallia). He felt great for this chance but the critic of the evening said that "After what we heard yesterday from MDM, we can say that nobody will ever talk of this tenor in the future"!!! Mario sang in all of the province big or small, at times for ridiculous fees (100 lire). He was even invited to Scala which was then bombed by the americans (1943) and was performing in Teatro Sociale di Como.
People expected someone in the family must have inherited his mother's beautiful voice. Mario thought this person should be his brother who seemed to possess a brilliant voice. However, as he grew in his late teens, Mario's natural voice started showing remarkable developement and his brother turned to Mario's talent.
Mario was actually sent to study art, painting and sculpture before his musical studies in order to have a better artistic education. He exhibited in Milano to critical acclaim!
Correction: It was the father who hoped that one of his sons will have inherited his wife's voice and initially noticed Marcelo's (MDM's brother) voice and eventually turned to Mario when his voice started developing...
