everytime I listen to this soundtrack I close my eyes and picture myself going outerspace and looking at the stars peacefully...it just sounds so magical
I love the piano in the beginning of this piece, it's just gorgeous. John Williams was at his absolute best for this score. A ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
OMG i can still remember when my mom took me to see this a a kid. I was crying because I though E.T had died, then when I saw the flowers come back to life I stood up and yelled. "He's alive MOM!!" And that scene when they flew their bikes past the sun is probably the most beautiful scene in cinema history!
@SlakyCampa I said the sun...And I meant the sun...Maybe if you watch the actual movie and stop thinking of that one scene from the trailer you would know what I was talking about. Elliot and his gang of bicyclist fly past the sunset towards then end half of the film and it's more epic than the moon flyby. Thank you
Spielberg was a great director especially at this time because he just wanted to make a film that was honest. And that goal spread throughout the amazing crew and cast to make a masterpiece. John Williams captured what no Director truly can... that sense of wonder. There's nothing magical about a bike against a matte painting or whatever... until you hear this song, and you know somehow, you're flying.
literally, after listening to this non-stop for almost everyday for about 5 months, I'm still in love with this music! it makes me so happy and when I listen to it, especially in the car or on my bike, I feel like nothing could ever stop me..best thing ever!
" I've always thought of John Williams as my musical rewrite artist. He comes in, sees my movie, rewrites the whole thing musically and makes it much better than i did. He can take a moment and just uplift it. He can take a tear that's just forming in your eye and he can cause it to drip." - Steven Spielberg
@kilibot It didn't fail miserably. It just tried so hard to be like another Goonies and E.T. that it forgot what was the most important aspect which made these movies unique: the story. Super 8's story fell short, but it made up for it through witty dialogue and moments of heart. In the end, it becomes a great homage to these films.
I've been reborn having catatonic schizophrenia since a child, I've seen aliens I talked to the dead even today I can hear a faint window where people speak through another dimension but my childhood is very important. It was the only time I was a real human and had peace where ever I went. But isn't that what I wanted? To be different? Home is in the 1970's until then will I be in Heaven.
wen is steven spielberg gonna make a 2nd movie?? he can still use the same cast!! he sez he feels lyk theyre his 1st family n they say ET was very real 2 them. y cnt he make a new 1 while theyre still yung?? they'd make fast money!! millions!! perhaps trillions!! plz steven spielberg if u just so happen 2 read this, PLZ MAKE ET CUME BACK!!! WE ♥ HIM!!!
@bellajuliahorses ET is a masterpiece, but it would be pointless a sequel. They were making one, but ET doesn't need a sequel. It's perfect as one film.
@futureman116 I pray and hope its a Blu-ray release. If it has the remastered version, I just hope it comes with the original as well. I will only want it for the Original.
This movie would have lost SO much without this soundtrack... think about the story. It's not that special. The acting and the emotion in the soundtrack's what gave it so much life. I split the credits with script/directing/technical/supporting actors at 10%, Henry Thomas at 30%, John Williams at 60%.
If kid version Henry Thomas lived out a third graders essay on their pet fish with a John Williams soundtrack, it'd probably be 90% as amazing. Thats the power of good acting/good music.
It does NOT get any better than this......as much as i admire John Barry (R.I.P) Danny Elfman Alan Silvestri Jerry Goldsmith Howard Shore James Newton Howerd James Horner and all the rest of the gifted individuals who can produce brilliant works....This man is by far the greatest and this is the most beautiful thing he has composed amid many , many others.
Lately movies have had a dark style to them, even kids movies (Harry Potter, Twilight)..Those films may be good, but they will never capture the imagination and hearts of millions, the way that E.T. did. We were involved in E.T., we all felt like Elliot..We found this creature with our eyes, we were nervous of him in the beginning, and then we grew to love him. E.T. has always been a figure for something deeper...Love. Just like we love this film, and the soundtracks. John Williams Forever!
Films like Inception may be brilliant (as was Hans Zimmers OST to it) but those films will never capture magic the way films such as ET did/do. Forever a masterpiece in every way.
The greatest two composers for film music are Wagner and Mahler. But Alfred Newman and John Williams are the greatest that actually composed for films.
The music alone can make me cry because I relive every beuatifull moment from the movie whenever I hear this...I was only 5 or 6 years old when the movie came out and my mother came out of the theater with two crying kids hehehe...
After all these years the movie still makes me cry...and when I want to cry but can't for some reason I put this or the movie on to get cryin...
@Ochenter Same here... I don't know why though. Maybe my loss of innocence. I didn't know how good I had it as a kid with NO responsibilities. Now I'm in my 4th year of college busting my balls to make it.
@Ochenter Far out, as soon as the music started playing, it struck a chord within my heart... This is just beautiful music. There's great music out there, but the music that strikes a chord in your heart is this sort of music... Incredible. So beautiful...
Sorry about that. ¿Why does this masterpiece makes you cry ? In my case is just because of many memories and livings from my childhood, and it's always hard to forget the 80's.
That's why I don't use to hear this if I can avoid it. Too emotional for me.
By the way, I never thought my comentary was going to be the most successful on this video. It's really an honour. Thanks to everyone, but never is easy to talk about sadness, neither and much lesser to talk bout the past.
@Ochenter The song makes me cry because it is so powerful yet delicate. I Love the sound of the Piano & violin so naturally every time I watch the film I get teary eyed because of the music alone. I Mega-Love the film don't get me wrong but THE MUSIC Sends me. After watching this film (As a young child) I discovered music, It made me aware of what music was. So each time I revisit this song I cry & I had to comment with you, LOL! And I do agree the 80's was a Revolutionary decade Never forgotten
Nothing worse than having your headphones up enjoying some good music.. then 1 second of silence... Directly into some annoying automated ad screaming in your ear about some shit house college.

I agree with usernamegirl1... great stuff, nearly 30 yrs. later.. I play piano, and the "Over the Moon" rendition is one of the hardest to play. Fan /collector of Williams' material for life, got the pleasure of meeting him May 22nd 2007 after a Boston Pops performance...
Oh yes, bostonpiano... and DEFINITELY not to take away from that outstandingly beautiful "Over the Moon" section , which is my favorite part. I love musicians who are great at their craft and his orchestra is just is the absolute BEST in the world. What an honor it must have been to meet such an iconic living legend. I'm a fan/collector, too.
@robintrailer I have the original VHS version from 1982, and its the best. Would NEVER reconmend the 20th anniversary DVD edition for obvious reasons!
I get teary eyed every time I hear the end of this song...this is my favorite movie of all time and the music is amazing. I love Steven Spielberg and John Williams!
Best ending you can have to a movie soundtrack. A great ending
