Me for example)) I wasn't born there but I can't imagine my life without this land at the coast of Baltic sea. This heritage cannot be erased. Many natives came before you, their families are still alive, and many of them identify with Eastprussia. Why not seeing it as city for both? Its no contradiction. Germans can move back to Konigsberg, and live together with Russians? I dont think this is a problem.

If people are for reconstruction of historic city, they will have full support from most German people. Yes, please reconstruct city. Seeing empty city centre is a very sad sight. Especially when we compare with old pictures.

Same mistake was made in Dresden under Communism: Many buildings were still standing, heavily damaged, but repairable. But many of them were blown up with dynamite, like Konigsberg Castle. This is very sad, Communism destroyed beauty and historic spirit.

You don't seem to know that Finland was ready to give areas from Karelia for excanging them for Russian areas which were much less valuable even they were around twice bigger. The key issue was that USSR wanted land next to Helsinki. Of course Finland rejected, imagined that Germany would have wanted area next to Moscow. Would you have given them?

Historians all around the World know that was just a hoax, even your own Russian historians like Kilin, Holodkovski etc. agree. The goal behind this land exchange was that Stalin wanted to have better position for starting war againt Finland. Islands for navy, Koivisto for getting around Mannerheim line, Hanko for threaten and conquer Helsinki.

When the threat came with the Germans, it did not come from Finnish land. Infrastructure in Karelia wasn't even good enough for using an army like Germans there against Leningrad. Before WInter War, Finland promised that any threat won't come through Finland and Finnish soldiers fight for it, even against Germany. Stalin's reason was only a cover up to have Finland.

Even during the Continuation War, Finnish front was close to Leningrad but they did not have actions againt the city, not bombings by planes or artillery. Also one more thing, Finnish commander-in-chief, Mannerheim loved the city because of his history in there. He was even ready to come with Finnish soldiers and free it from bolseviks during the Russian civil war. Your reason is wrong.

I agree with rklight33, many of the buildings could have been salvaged after the War, like the Poles did in Danzig. The RAF air raid of August 1944 was a dreadful event, and destroyed mostly the old town rather than industry in the suburbs. No doubt there was a cultural purpose to the destruction. However, there appeared to be hope that the Castle would be rebuilt, Putin allegedly promised money for the purpose, and the Cathedral has been saved. The suburbs are in urgent need of repair.

How sad to see what was lost. To go from a city almost as beautiful as Amsterdam to one of the most unbearably ugly cities. The iconoclasm was calculated, as the allies [ALL of the allies, not just the Russians] saw the cultural artifacts of Konigsburg and elsewhere as expressions of "Prussian militarism". Also, Russia wanted to make the land truly theirs, which wouldn't be possible unless they destroyed at least the vast majority of German cultural monuments. It was all part of eliminating the German peoples' connection to the land so they could not claim any cultural link.
