Oh how I would love to be able to actually sing...Schubert's lieders speak to the heart and explores the deepest fathoms of human emotion. The type of stuff that can make you cry despite not understanding a single word. xD The magic of Schubert is,despite the lyrics being in German, that you can understand the words merely by feeling them.Music is after all a universal language. :)
This version comes from the big DG Schubert collection. The booklet says this recording is from 1969. I'll have to listen again to the Salzburg recording you say is your favorite. If it's better than this, is must be something. :)
This production has everything - the voice of F-D, the piano of G.M., the libretto in English and German, and a beautifully appropriate video which embodies the theme
See what this music has done to me? I MEANT to say...introducing me TO THIS piece of music that I have not heard before but will be listening to Again and again! Good grief i didn't know music could do this to ones grammar !
I was so entranced with this that I forgot my manners! Thank you so much FiDitanzer528 for introducing me to piece of music i have never heard before but will be listening to gain and again, it is stunning!
I am willing to bet that when Dietrich Fischer- Dieskau and Gerald Moore finished recording this ALL the music gods let out a deep sigh of sheer delight! Bravo, this is mind numbingly beautiful!
Me singing? :) Ah no, this is the great baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, one of of greatest singers of the German Lied. You can hear more of him on my channel. I'm glad you liked the video.
Amazing! Thanks a lot for this video. They are both so wonderful. The piano part is one of those everybody can sight read and play right away in any key and it soooo hard to play it well. Thanks again.
I agree with megansspark. Not only is the song beautiful throughout but the breathtaking images accompanied with the video are conveyed in such a perfect manner that leaves me speechless. Thank you FiDiTanzer528 for sharing with us this splendid video.

Expect perfection and you will always get it from DFD!
When was this recorded? My favorite recording of this lied is on the 1963 Saltzburg Festival (Schubert)CD.
Thank you, FiDiTanzer528

No doubt about it....this is lovely but I
believe I prefer the 1963 Saltzburg Festival recording. His youth still shines through it.
