  • my fav songggggggggg

  • Every piece of art of this movie is deserved to be seen, heard over and over. The so called Music Directors of this age either should learn music or stop making(copy & Paste) music. A song needs to have "soul". Today, every song has english words to make it peppy, someone should tell them, we need non-peppy songs too.

  • burman sahab...kya baat hai...

  • TWO GREATEST SUPER TALENTS EVER SEEN IN HINDI FILMS BURMAN DADA AND THE GREAT POET LYRICST SHAILENDRAJI CREATED THIS MEMORABLE SONG JUST LIKE THEY CREATED SOME GEMS EARLIER DADA AND SHAILENDRAJI WILL REMAIN IN OUR HEART AND MIND FOREVER AND FOREVER

  • S. D . Burman sahib you became Amar, with this movie songs.

  • MY FAV....

  • such an awesum song..just truth of life...

  • In continuation with last comment, so much was the public opinion against the result for not awarding Pakeeza, that noted actor Pran refused to receive the filmfare acting award announced to him for "Beimaan". Although SJ received the maximum number of (9) filmfare music awards, many of them seemed fixed. To me, SJ very much excelled in musical scores, and also in the fixing games as well. After all they were regular with RK for most of its glorious period. I appreciate their telent as well.

  • After going through most of the comments it is beyond doubt that this movie was a complete in all aspects, music being probably most credit side. But few would know that this movie lost to "Suraj" for best filmfare music award (Composers Shankar Jaikishan) in 1965. Another movie "Pakeeza" the great musical lost to "Beimaan" in 1971 (composers again SJ) for the same award. With great respect for SJ, nobody believed the results neither then, nor now. Prize fixing was played even at that time also.

  • @tubepipevision : I have read that too...the great Madan Mohan ji lost to S-J politics...S-J s were definitely very talented, but were extremely manipulative ...

  • movie name is GUIDE n based on the novel by RK NARAYNAN..

  • beautiful song of a beautiful movie...y our directors don't make such kind of movies...dey r simply spoiling our future generation...

  • Such a nice song. Too bad most of the movies/songs are only catering to NRI's. Unnecessary, stylized english has become the norm. How I wish the older music composers like SD, RD, OP and shanker-Jaikishen were still alive!. They would leave the the highly overated A.R. Rehman in the dust.

  • nice song classical..voice............one fo the best movie Guide in hindi cenema. spiritual movie very very touching................

  • Dewanand isme qaidi kam lag raha hai. Aisa lag raha hai jaise kisi chalte phirte business ko chhorkar jail se bahar a raha hai.

  • Great song...the only other person who could have sung it right and whose voice would have suited this song is Manna Dey...I think

Great meaningful lyrics...now we have to contend with stuff like "Munni Badnaam Hui"

  • @AbhijitDu This song is sung by S. D. Burman itself.

  • speachless beauty in this song..

  • I had almost forgotten about this gem!!!

  • who is the singer? it's such a great voice..

  • @kallsid S.D.Burman himself!

  • I don't know about the movie, but the song kinda addicting...even though i have no idea what in the world he is saying .

  • These brothers were the greatest team in last 100 years of Indian Cinema. They were ahead minm. 20 years of their time. Dev,Vijay and eldest Chetan. Unfirtunate that they split . My father and grand father used to admire them like anything. I think Dev has still got energy and he can do wonders. My father gave me his example to convince me to quit smoking some 17 years back siting mr. dev energy that he has still got so much energu to go ahead. so i can also quit such dirty habit.

  • sdburman dadda is simply genious.tradittional way of composing the songs without loosing the melody, we dont find such type of commitement and sincerity in today,s music directors.simply the machines work

  • The wise ones say, The world is impermanent, (Akin to) a writing on water, So many have seen it, So many have followed it, (But) Nobody could get hold of it, Nothing is yours, Nothing is mine; You showed the way to all, Why you yourself lost the way (destination)?, You extricated many from the tangle, Why you yourself lost in the encumbrances? Why the snake-charmer should (himself) dance?

  • Who is there of yours, O, Free-bird, where will you go? Take a breather, rest a while, Where else you will get a shadow (refuge) like this? Gone are those days, (And) The moments of love, Those nights (times) have become dreamlike, They have forgotten, You also give up, (On) Those tender moments, All around its dark; Nobody waits for you, Nobody longs for you, Nobody felt your pain, Nobody shared your agony, Nobody(’s eye) shed a tear, Whom you call your own?

  • Please people, don't play with the translations. @GuruDanny

The word is Fa'ani - Mortal, Laa-Faani - Immortal. The translation finite and infinite does not make any sense in the song.

  • @alphaneo100 Sir - with due respect, you choose the right word 'mortal' for 'fanni' and I respect that, however, I totally disagree with you on your earlier comment where you said that it is "fanni pey likhi likhai" - with an open mind please re-consider because that does not fit very well in that phrase - try to use paani and see if that makes better sense. It is funny that you pass the remark on my Urdu vocabulary whereas I used a poorly selected English word for 'fanni'. God Bless. Danial

  • @GuruDanny - Guru, First of all it is not pronounced as Fanni, it is Faani. In urdu poetry one word can be used at times to describe either a characteristic or can be used as a noun itself. Here the poet is trying to tell that the world is mortal and on mortality the life is written on. I am sure the poet has written well and he knows what he is trying to express so why change the words to get better meanings when it is not relevant. May I know where you belong to and what is your mother tongue?

  • Hats off to SD Burman Saab!!! Too Good

  • This song connect me to music ,..............and that is song for me

  • brilliant song and the truth of love

  • guyzzzzzzzzzzzz.... gaur pharmaiye.... koi bhi teri raah naa dekhi.. nain bechaaye naa koi... dard se teri koi naa tadpa.. aankh kisi ki naa roi.. kya lyrics hai... SD burman rockssssssssssssssss...

  • hey its not paani.. its faani(mystery).. faani means mystery.. kehte hai gyaani.. duniya hai faani.. faani pe likhi likhayi.. hai sabki dekhi.. hai sabki jaani.. haath kisi ke na aayi.. the sages say tat d world s a mystery.. n our fates are mysterious.. this show it goes bro...

  • almost perfect, but see its not FAANI PE LIKHi its PAANI PE LIKHI LIKHAYI,,@kamu2460

  • @kamu2460 Dear friend, as I mentioned somewhere else on this thread, "fanni" is an Arabic word and it means finite not mystery. On the other hand, "la-fanni" means infinite. Try to put this new meaning into the phrase - duniya hey fanni (finite) and panni (water) pe likhi likhai - see if this enhance the meaning of these phrases. If you don't like my explanation, please check the Arabic/English translation. I hope you are not offended with this explanation. Thanks, Danial

  • Aap sabne bahut kuch sunaya, Ab hamari bhi thodi sun lo.

  • So many informative, beautifully worded comments from the lovers of indian music and lyrics. I would like to also recall, Shri R. K. Narayan, on whose wonderful Novel The Guide , this Movie is based upon........

  • open challenge to present to composers. they cannot come anywhere close to it.

  • heart wrenching songs man!

  • this song depicts true meaning of life...really we have to search our destinies alone

  • my fav. song & my fav. movie forever

  • Such a great artist "SD Burman", today AR Rehman can be compared to him. A great musician and one who has given amazingly good songs in his own voice.

  • @surender72 Please don't insult S D Burman by comparing him with inferior artist of today like AR Rehman

  • one of the best songs i have ever heard

  • GREAT song!

  • lovely song

  • Vijay Anand , Burman Da & Dev Anand created magic in films like ; Guide , Kala Bazar , Jewel Thief , Tere Ghar Ke Samne , Tere Mere Sapne & Nau Do Gyarah . No other Director can match Vijay Anand in song picturisation in films.

  • Many students of music has wondered about the raaga & other techncialities of this song....

Perhaps nobody will know that this song is sung in the manipuri folk music style...usually this style of singing is accompanied by a manipuri musical instrument called " penna".....

  • Here produced Sachin Da and Shailendra the most touching philosophical song. Also, the watershed movie for Dev to prove he was more than just for the girls to swoon over. The fallen common man's journey to become a sage. A wonderful movie in all respects, a classic in popular cinema.

  • in my opinion the greatest drawback in indian music especially in our films is that stress too much on melody..so u hav many sweet melodious songs..but song like this is very rare...it is something so etheral...just touch the soul..no one cud hav sung this song better than burman da...not even Mohd.Rafi....

As far as this film is concerned this is a classic...tight script, nice acting, great songs, pacy editing, wonderful direction and above all..Fali Mistry's brilliant camerawork...

  • @bsingha It is melody that makes a song ethereal. And of course a voice with character always adds to the spiritual experience of the listener. A syrupy voice just does not have the same effect, & that's when melody becomes sickeningly sweet.

  • @aparaajita10 ok u win...one can nvr win argument with a girl..smile..

  • @bsingha :) Thank You. You just made my day, in more ways than one. & I thought chivalry was dead...killed by the feminists in a suicide mission. I have to complement you on your taste in music. And not just you happen to like my favorite song sung by my my all time favorite Sangeetagya, that too, but you simply seem to like good music. Thanks once again. Have a great one. :)

  • @aparaajita10 ....itz alwyz a pleasure to hear beautiful words from a lady...good day...

  • Gr8 song!!

  • What a Super Hindustani film Guide and Old is Gold Song where have they all gone. Sadly we do not hear such great songs anymore.

Sadly, today's Corrupt and Over Westernized Bollywood with over rated Khan KID or CHILD actors like SRK who cannot act are made famous by ignorant and stupid young generation of today who do not know what is a good acting, song and music.

  • @htgajjar

I agree 200%. It's beyond my intelligence, how actors like SRK can be bollywood badshah.

  • Very deep & profound meaning of this song !

  • jaane kahan gaye wo din.

  • Not merely a song but depiction of realities of life. I love this number. Many thanks for the upload, bellztoll.

  • idont have wqrds iwant to cry only

  • what a song, great music ,great voice- uncomparable

  • why these kinds of song cannot be created now a days. Everything is perfect and just moves the string of heart. I think the voice of sd burman is unique and unmatchable. I am not finding words to praise the artist

  • because now a days song comes out of money not heart or emotion

  • Because now so called bollywood became copy cat of hollywood! they forgot our indian cutlure and so they cant reflect in cinemas! they know how to show bikini songs and worthless music.

The people who use to create this kind of beautiful songs, who use to write, give their voice and music already died! so bollywood is nothing more then western trash! @rashmi497

  • @st471438 because it is so much easier to do what hollywood does, music is not a part of their social ethos. And moreover to compose in the Indian tradition, one needs decades of sadhna, riyaaz, to the extent of giving up everything else. Today, the only aim is most publicity for least effort. That messes up everything. And the lack of respect for local languages & dialects & to hybridize them with english, which is a very poor language as far as vocabulary goes, ruins it completely

  • Great S D Burman composed and sang this great song penned by Great SHAILENDRA. They also did KALA BAZAR together.

  • @aceji and bandini and meri surat teri aankhen :)

  • a beutiful poetry

  • Guide (1965) is one of the finest works of the Ever Green Legendary Artiste DEV ANAND. I would consider Guide as great as Mother India (1958), Daag (1956), Mughal-e-Azam (1960s), Barsaat (1949), Aawara (1951), Mera Naam Joker (1970) etc. He was one of the great trio pillars Dalip Kumar, Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand. Do not forget to watch Kaal Pani (1958) with Madhubala and Kala Bazaar (1960s)

  • Comment removed

  • S.D.BURMAN is great and no music director of now a days had the potentiality to compete him. OLD IS GOLD.

  • This movie takes us a step above and beyond our mortal being. Highly spiritual theme; highly successful movie that i have watched more than twice and would love to watch again.

  • as a kid i heard this song.now i am 24.

the msg of unworldiness it has,it did not fail to diliver even to a child.

  • Was there a single flaw in this movie...

Its a timeless work of art, the best possibly that Indian cinema ever produced...

  • If someone can understand then they would the Guide is the greatest hindi movie ever made.

  • @shahbaztherock

    He is saying:

Who is there for you? Oh Traveler, where do you want to go? Wait, catch a breath, where would you find a shade like this? Oh traveler, where are you going to?

Days have passed, those days of love, those nights have become a dream.

They have forgotten, you should too forget those meetings of love. Oh traveler there is no one there, where do you want to go?

No one is waiting for you, no one is. no one is concerned with your pain, no one cries on your pain.o travel..

  • @rohit200abc Dear this traveler means we all are visitor of this world and so please take breath and do the work with justice.

  • @ravindravyasit123

    Obviously that's what I meant. :)

  • @shahbaztherock

    I completely agree bro

  • @shahbaztherock This movie tells in simple language what our religious leaders try to teach us. Detached attachment to this world.

  • 5star +++++

  • awsm ..

  • hai sab ki dekhi, hai sabki jaani, haath kisi key naa aayeee, na kuch tera, na mera.......

  • oh god.........

  • yes it takes u to that extent to say.....

  • SD BURMAN...You were Ustad of the music!!!!! What a melodious voice...!

  • No he was the king of music. Infact he was the crowned prince of a small kingdom by name Comilla in Assam. A few days before his coronation- his old father's wish- he ran away from the palace because he did't want to be the king of a small place, his fate was to be the uncrowned king of a much wider kingdom, and indeed he became one.

  • his hair is unbelievable

  • why we lose beautiful things in life so early and find out that whatever is now there is so ugly ...and only thing that mattered ...is money...life has lost its battle to it....

  • very well said

  • great song

  • great song...luv it!!

  • i love this song...one of my fav song....

  • This is one of the finest song that I like to see the video of. The entire environment reverberates with the voice of Sachin da, he has sung many songs, but this one impresses me the most

  • and Doli mein bithaike Kahar and O re Manjhi and ......

  • this song fits my life i m alone at crossroads of life ;-(

  • shows the absurdity of life

    great song

  • fucking brilliant song

  • now I know why "OLD IS GOLD". New generation music in bollywood, sucks..

    The age was golden age.

  • While listening to a radio program back in late 1980 I remember SD Burman saying this " The whole music for this movie was completed in 3 days only"

  • thnks fr this

  • Beautiful composition and sung by S D, hats off!

  • RK Narayanan is brilliant story teller. This song is justice to the great story. SD Burman is magician with music.

  • I like the village name Anjanpur every other name is jus fake

  • Wahaan Kaun hai tera? Who's for you there??

What a brilliant lyrics, score, ...

Hats off to SD Burman, Dev Anand And RK Narayan...

  • this song is a guide of life hats off

  • hai jiya roye is from milan (old) sung by lata ji and filmed on nalini jaywant.

this song from guide is immortal . no words to describe.

  • It's Ashok Kumar at 5:14 to 5:18

  • No, he is not. Though he looks a bit like him :-)

  • legendary S D Burman...sang this song...

  • who sang this song?

  • what a beautiful rendition....one of my all time favorites!!!

  • its looks like as he was a real............

    folk singer.

    hats off 2 sachin da.

  • Translation (part 2 of 2) No one waits for you and no one keeps a look out for you Your pain affects no one and no one cries for you Why do you think some one else is your own? (refrain) The sages say that the world is water And this life - is like writing in water (momentary) Every one sees it and every one knows it But it is not in any one's grasp There is nothing that is yours or mine (refrain)
  • @steppedonwolf

    DUNIYA HAI FAANI (not paani)...

    FAANI = mystery...

  • @coolrapperq123 With due respect, Faani does not mean mystery - it is anything which has an end to it. Try to see it this way - La-fanni = which has no end - only Allah/God is La-fanni - everything else finishes at its time.

  • @GuruDanny Also, now try to follow the lyrics this way. duniya hey faani - paani pey likhi likhai = meaning this world/life has an end and like written on the water. Steppedonwolf had done a very good translation of these phrases. Please, I mean no harm and offense to anyone. Thanks.
