@alphaneo100 Sir - with due respect, you choose the right word 'mortal' for 'fanni' and I respect that, however, I totally disagree with you on your earlier comment where you said that it is "fanni pey likhi likhai" - with an open mind please re-consider because that does not fit very well in that phrase - try to use paani and see if that makes better sense. It is funny that you pass the remark on my Urdu vocabulary whereas I used a poorly selected English word for 'fanni'. God Bless. Danial
@GuruDanny - Guru, First of all it is not pronounced as Fanni, it is Faani. In urdu poetry one word can be used at times to describe either a characteristic or can be used as a noun itself. Here the poet is trying to tell that the world is mortal and on mortality the life is written on. I am sure the poet has written well and he knows what he is trying to express so why change the words to get better meanings when it is not relevant. May I know where you belong to and what is your mother tongue?

@kamu2460 Dear friend, as I mentioned somewhere else on this thread, "fanni" is an Arabic word and it means finite not mystery. On the other hand, "la-fanni" means infinite. Try to put this new meaning into the phrase - duniya hey fanni (finite) and panni (water) pe likhi likhai - see if this enhance the meaning of these phrases. If you don't like my explanation, please check the Arabic/English translation. I hope you are not offended with this explanation. Thanks, Danial
So many informative, beautifully worded comments from the lovers of indian music and lyrics. I would like to also recall, Shri R. K. Narayan, on whose wonderful Novel The Guide , this Movie is based upon........
Such a great artist "SD Burman", today AR Rehman can be compared to him. A great musician and one who has given amazingly good songs in his own voice.
Vijay Anand , Burman Da & Dev Anand created magic in films like ; Guide , Kala Bazar , Jewel Thief , Tere Ghar Ke Samne , Tere Mere Sapne & Nau Do Gyarah . No other Director can match Vijay Anand in song picturisation in films.
Many students of music has wondered about the raaga & other techncialities of this song....
Perhaps nobody will know that this song is sung in the manipuri folk music style...usually this style of singing is accompanied by a manipuri musical instrument called " penna".....
Here produced Sachin Da and Shailendra the most touching philosophical song. Also, the watershed movie for Dev to prove he was more than just for the girls to swoon over. The fallen common man's journey to become a sage. A wonderful movie in all respects, a classic in popular cinema.
in my opinion the greatest drawback in indian music especially in our films is that stress too much on melody..so u hav many sweet melodious songs..but song like this is very rare...it is something so etheral...just touch the soul..no one cud hav sung this song better than burman da...not even Mohd.Rafi....
As far as this film is concerned this is a classic...tight script, nice acting, great songs, pacy editing, wonderful direction and above all..Fali Mistry's brilliant camerawork...
@bsingha It is melody that makes a song ethereal. And of course a voice with character always adds to the spiritual experience of the listener. A syrupy voice just does not have the same effect, & that's when melody becomes sickeningly sweet.
@bsingha :) Thank You. You just made my day, in more ways than one. & I thought chivalry was dead...killed by the feminists in a suicide mission. I have to complement you on your taste in music. And not just you happen to like my favorite song sung by my my all time favorite Sangeetagya, that too, but you simply seem to like good music. Thanks once again. Have a great one. :)
What a Super Hindustani film Guide and Old is Gold Song where have they all gone. Sadly we do not hear such great songs anymore.
Sadly, today's Corrupt and Over Westernized Bollywood with over rated Khan KID or CHILD actors like SRK who cannot act are made famous by ignorant and stupid young generation of today who do not know what is a good acting, song and music.
why these kinds of song cannot be created now a days. Everything is perfect and just moves the string of heart. I think the voice of sd burman is unique and unmatchable. I am not finding words to praise the artist
Because now so called bollywood became copy cat of hollywood! they forgot our indian cutlure and so they cant reflect in cinemas! they know how to show bikini songs and worthless music.
The people who use to create this kind of beautiful songs, who use to write, give their voice and music already died! so bollywood is nothing more then western trash! @rashmi497
@st471438 because it is so much easier to do what hollywood does, music is not a part of their social ethos. And moreover to compose in the Indian tradition, one needs decades of sadhna, riyaaz, to the extent of giving up everything else. Today, the only aim is most publicity for least effort. That messes up everything. And the lack of respect for local languages & dialects & to hybridize them with english, which is a very poor language as far as vocabulary goes, ruins it completely
Guide (1965) is one of the finest works of the Ever Green Legendary Artiste DEV ANAND. I would consider Guide as great as Mother India (1958), Daag (1956), Mughal-e-Azam (1960s), Barsaat (1949), Aawara (1951), Mera Naam Joker (1970) etc. He was one of the great trio pillars Dalip Kumar, Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand. Do not forget to watch Kaal Pani (1958) with Madhubala and Kala Bazaar (1960s)
This movie takes us a step above and beyond our mortal being. Highly spiritual theme; highly successful movie that i have watched more than twice and would love to watch again.
Who is there for you? Oh Traveler, where do you want to go? Wait, catch a breath, where would you find a shade like this? Oh traveler, where are you going to?
Days have passed, those days of love, those nights have become a dream.
They have forgotten, you should too forget those meetings of love. Oh traveler there is no one there, where do you want to go?
No one is waiting for you, no one is. no one is concerned with your pain, no one cries on your pain.o travel..
No he was the king of music. Infact he was the crowned prince of a small kingdom by name Comilla in Assam. A few days before his coronation- his old father's wish- he ran away from the palace because he did't want to be the king of a small place, his fate was to be the uncrowned king of a much wider kingdom, and indeed he became one.
why we lose beautiful things in life so early and find out that whatever is now there is so ugly ...and only thing that mattered ...is money...life has lost its battle to it....
This is one of the finest song that I like to see the video of. The entire environment reverberates with the voice of Sachin da, he has sung many songs, but this one impresses me the most
Translation (part 2 of 2) No one waits for you and no one keeps a look out for you Your pain affects no one and no one cries for you Why do you think some one else is your own? (refrain) The sages say that the world is water And this life - is like writing in water (momentary) Every one sees it and every one knows it But it is not in any one's grasp There is nothing that is yours or mine (refrain)
@coolrapperq123 With due respect, Faani does not mean mystery - it is anything which has an end to it. Try to see it this way - La-fanni = which has no end - only Allah/God is La-fanni - everything else finishes at its time.
@GuruDanny Also, now try to follow the lyrics this way. duniya hey faani - paani pey likhi likhai = meaning this world/life has an end and like written on the water. Steppedonwolf had done a very good translation of these phrases. Please, I mean no harm and offense to anyone. Thanks.
i believe sd burman saab saved his voice for GEMS (although i think all his songs are GEMS)... <3 this song

In continuation with last comment, so much was the public opinion against the result for not awarding Pakeeza, that noted actor Pran refused to receive the filmfare acting award announced to him for "Beimaan". Although SJ received the maximum number of (9) filmfare music awards, many of them seemed fixed. To me, SJ very much excelled in musical scores, and also in the fixing games as well. After all they were regular with RK for most of its glorious period. I appreciate their telent as well.

The word is Fa'ani - Mortal, Laa-Faani - Immortal. The translation finite and infinite does not make any sense in the song.

Perhaps nobody will know that this song is sung in the manipuri folk music style...usually this style of singing is accompanied by a manipuri musical instrument called " penna".....
bsingha 1 year ago
Here produced Sachin Da and Shailendra the most touching philosophical song. Also, the watershed movie for Dev to prove he was more than just for the girls to swoon over. The fallen common man's journey to become a sage. A wonderful movie in all respects, a classic in popular cinema.
nandu1f 1 year ago
in my opinion the greatest drawback in indian music especially in our films is that stress too much on melody..so u hav many sweet melodious songs..but song like this is very rare...it is something so etheral...just touch the soul..no one cud hav sung this song better than burman da...not even Mohd.Rafi....
As far as this film is concerned this is a classic...tight script, nice acting, great songs, pacy editing, wonderful direction and above all..Fali Mistry's brilliant camerawork...
bsingha 1 year ago

@htgajjar
I agree 200%. It's beyond my intelligence, how actors like SRK can be bollywood badshah.

why these kinds of song cannot be created now a days. Everything is perfect and just moves the string of heart. I think the voice of sd burman is unique and unmatchable. I am not finding words to praise the artist
rashmi497 1 year ago 4
because now a days song comes out of money not heart or emotion
aaashu7777 1 year ago
Because now so called bollywood became copy cat of hollywood! they forgot our indian cutlure and so they cant reflect in cinemas! they know how to show bikini songs and worthless music.
The people who use to create this kind of beautiful songs, who use to write, give their voice and music already died! so bollywood is nothing more then western trash! @rashmi497
st471438 1 year ago 43

He is saying:

DUNIYA HAI FAANI (not paani)...
FAANI = mystery...
coolrapperq123 1 year ago
@coolrapperq123 With due respect, Faani does not mean mystery - it is anything which has an end to it. Try to see it this way - La-fanni = which has no end - only Allah/God is La-fanni - everything else finishes at its time.
GuruDanny 1 year ago
@GuruDanny Also, now try to follow the lyrics this way. duniya hey faani - paani pey likhi likhai = meaning this world/life has an end and like written on the water. Steppedonwolf had done a very good translation of these phrases. Please, I mean no harm and offense to anyone. Thanks.
