Bill sacrificed. Someone had to power the generater so they could get across. Bill offered and so while he kept the generator the others got to bridge for safety. When bill was gonna join them he was attacked and killed by the horde.

Francis couldn't die either, cos lots of people loved him.

Zoey was one of the few females ... so she couldn't die either

Bill was a respected war veteran, and a true hero. He was also getting old, and probably didn't want the young ones dying, so it fitted his role pretty well.
