  • I adopted a pooch from a humane society. He had a curly tail and was all red (like a chow) with some white spots. He was the only one more interested in me than his own food. He is the cuddliest animal. No matter where I am he has to be touching me. He is super playful and has endless energy. 12 mile hikes don't phase him. He is also completely silent when moving. It's spooky. Probably one of the smartest dogs I have seen. He is the perfect dog (Except for chewing everything) and I love him.

  • 9ga..g?

  • i had a dog like this he could hell of run fast and he was veary loveing and loyal, never barked and hell of smart.i loved him so much but my stupid aunt lost him when i left him at her house when i left to canada :( :( :(

  • I have two B's. DO NOT GET A BASENJI BECAUSE THEY LOOK COOL.... if you do not know about what a Basenji needs, it will destroy your everything and ruin yours and its life. Just don't do it, get a lab.

  • I have had a basenji for almost ten years (: her name is Laurlai, and she is well trained, rarely yodels unless she needs to go outside, and an awesome little companion. She's almost ten but she has tons of energy and loves to run around. I reccomend a basenji to anyone.

  • IWANTONEiwantoneiwantonee! They have such cute tails. :))

  • This has to be the most pointless dog breed in the world. They're hard to train because they are stupid.

  • @MrJabber22 they're only had to train when the dog is smarter than the trainer ...

  • @MrJabber22 They're cat-like. Which means they are independent. You have to be smart to be independent. And if they're pontless, then why can they hunt lions without guns and you can't?

  • @kimmyx0x1

Haha you're just a cliche ridden bitch.

Thats real original, just say "they are better than you blah blah blah" "go die in hell"

wow real harsh, had no impact on me what so ever, don't argue on the internet, its pointless.

    Now piss off.

  • are they hard to train

  • You know they rate intelligence by how well the dog listens to a human? Just because the dog is independent doesn't make it dumb.

They should rate humans to this logic.

  • @TokyoOreoz They do, it's called the academic school system

  • @LoouLost And yet, people still get diplomas. :P

  • Umm, why is she bringing a dog into a store? I think that breaks some OHS rules.

  • I love their curly tails.

  • One lives next door to me in my apartment building. It has seperation anxiety so when the owner is gone to work, it howls all day long. I saw it with the owner on the elevator and went to put my hand out for it to sniff and so I could pet it, but it snapped at me as if it was going to bite me.

  • this is the first place i have read or heard anything referring to these dogs as not being intelligent. from what i can tell they seem very much the opposite of that.

  • Basenji's never bark

  • those that dislike this, do to hell! how can you dislike this!

  • @09202741976 go to hell*

  • Basenjis look like Fox McCloud from Star Fox :D

  • @YAYFORCHICKENSLOL

We have one and I agree about the small yard. We got ours from the human society and they improperly labeled him as a spitz/pincher but he is for sure a Basenji mix and has all the characteristics personality wise. I have never seen a little dog (or a big dog for that matter) run as fast and as much as our little guy. We take him over to our family house every week so he can get a large yard to run in and he out runs our young lab. every time.

  • @sthomp08 you have a MUTT.

    not a basenji.

  • @YAYFORCHICKENSLOL Your comment was so cool!

  • Personality similar to the bull terrier. Smart, stubborn, active.

  • My favorite type of dog lol reminds me of my dog kasy who was a basenji best dogs out there i think they don't bark they whine its quite cool i miss my dog my dog kinda looked like the 1 at 1:02 a female

  • I found mine as a puppy at a rescue shelter. We had no idea what she was. She housebroke in 5 days . She knows several words. I can name one of a dozen toys and she will bring that toy to me. She does not care for other dogs except Basenjis and would rather spend time with a cat than a dog. She acts like the smartest cat I have ever owned. She demands two things 20 minutes of fetching her ball every day and being able to lie next to me whenever she can. She grooms herself like a cat.

  • Smartest dog out of all the dogs ive had. very smart

  • I have a basenji and it went through training at petsmart. The instructor said that this is the smartest dog he has ever seen. My basenji was potty trained in 1 week using the chimes on the door technique. every time you bring your basenji out pull her up to the chime and say outside!. If you get one look for the calmest one out of the pack like I did. There were a few of them that were too hyper. I love my basenji and she loves to sleep with me everynight:)

  • Basenjis are one of my favorite breeds of dog

  • MISCHIVOUS!

  • I have a basenji/lab/? dog. :) I love her so much.

There are some videos on my channel of her. :)

  • I have a Basenji Pit mix (I hope the mom was the Pit!). He looks very Basenji, except for his more blunt nose and very large jaws! He's about twice the size of a purebreed Basenji, and definitely got the Pit vocal chords! Because of his two "stubborn" breeds, he's been challenging to train. But he's almost 6 now and has matured quite well, although he is still very protective. And he is very much a woman's dog, not very keen on men.

  • I have a basenji

  • They're so beautiful! I don't think they're related, but they seem to have terrier qualities, both in looks and behavior.

  • awww. i've got a basenji mix at home. super adorable. but high maintenance.

  • i would get a basenji bitch and name her binky <3 oh she would be the cutest! i love bitches, but i also love the boy dogs too, lol. its just in boy dogs you cant put bows in its hair xD

  • Awesome dogs. I'm not sure but i think mine is half basenji. We can tell that he is not purebred bcause he can bark, and his tail isn't curled up lyk the basenjis r.

  • @Nintendogsfreak11 Do you have a picture of your mixed basenji. I have a mixed breed too I believe.

  • yes i have a few pics of my dog.

  • @patlor0416 go to my videos & I have a basenji/corgi mix when she started barking. She's a year & half now! She was about 4 months old in the video!

  • they are incredible dog but to me they are like mexican gangsta dog.

  • we rescued a one day old litter of puppies and their mom from the shelter about 3 months ago and could never figure out what the father of the pups was...it's now clear that he was a basenji, several of the puppies when they were babies looked EXACTLY like the pics I see of baby basenjis and you can still see it...Heath looks like he's got socks on all four paws and a scarf around his neck, with a little wrinkley forehead and "droopy" eyelids

  • @brunette2blondie2005

    They are cute <3

But im gonna get a medium poodle

  • In the early 70's my family raised a Basenji in chicago and she was a powerful, loyal and wonderful companion. Quite the trickster wanting to get your attention. Laying down on whatever patch of sun that came in from a window..

  • @Safranverre

I agree. I have a Basenji mix, and he's extremely intelligent. He was the easiest dog I've ever house-trained. You just have to be smarter than the dog... And admittedly, my basenji is sometimes much more clever than I am! :-)

  • cute bark >u<

  • Comment removed

  • this dog looks awesome but its bark is a bit freaky

  • these dogs are incredibly smart. also, i wouldnt recommend this dog if you live in a house with a small backyard. these guys LOVE open spaces and could run for miles

  • @fakespotter Sorry, but the Basenji is the hardest dog to train due to the lack of intelligence. Do your homework. This is actually one of the LEAST intelligent dog breeds out there.

  • @DrHooligan312 How do you know that they're one of the least intelligent?

  • @DrHooligan312

Not as dumb as the afghan hound, fuck they are stupid, and ugly.

  • @DrHooligan312 So because the basenji is hard to train like regular dogs they're stupid? I think YOU should do your homework. Basenji's aren't stupid, they just have to be trained with understanding and partnership rather than dominance. You can learn a basenji anything if you know how to train it. I don't think you ever have been near a basenji to say they aren't intelligent!

  • @DrHooligan312 doing everything a human says do isn't a sign of intelligence in animals anyway...playfulness is. You should do YOUR homework.

  • @fakespotter VERY TRUE

  • i like look basenji nice.

  • i have a basenji and he's everythin else than stupid, i can tell. i love the breed <3

  • I believe basenjis are the best dog breed in the world. They require a LOT of exercise and this cuts down on their destructive behavior. Their training also requires a bit more attention than most other medium size or large size breeds. Plenty of treat induced instruction is good enough to get him/her to start listening. Punishment does not work on these dogs, as it will make him/her resent you and will be even more destructive.Do not trust a basenji off-leash.

    I want another 10 basenji

  • I adopted my Basenji mix from a shelter 7 years ago and she has been the most loving, intellegent dog I have ever owned. When I first took her to my vet, he recognised what she was and advised me that she might be a lot of trouble. He also told me to never spank her, which I have not.

Once she recognised me as alpha, her training was easy. Her primary requirements is to keep her warm, play ball every day and allow her lots of physical contact. She speaks with growls, yawns, and has no odor.

  • Oh my gooosh 0:51, little fat basenji!!

  • Dude basenjis are so ghetto! I have one hes now 11 and still as bad ass as ever! He can be so sweet one second and the next hes attacking the pizza man at the front door! talk about front door aggression

  • @Jorgmandr Thats my basinji mix to a T.

  • I have a Basenji mix.

  • Theyd be nice for hunting or maybe a no kids pet, but im looking for a guard dog, lol just was curious hearing how strange this one is

  • Oh my gooosh 0:37 he looks like my DOG but exactly the same eyes nose ears and the pink point above the nose!! DINGOOO look at my video its him!!

  • I heard they're better for people with allergies is that true?

  • @livelaughlovexable yes there hypoallergenic

  • i hav a basenji lets just say we hav no more squirrels around our house

  • I bet you that if you try to hide the treats from a Basenji, he'll find them and snack on them behind your back. XD

  • i had 24 basenji's, but i had to get rid of them,

     because they killed a horse!

  • I had a basenji named Odie, and he had all recessive traits- he only had black hair, and little white. He was a good boy. What was cool about him, was that he knows who was his master/best ally, who was me. Alert, fast, and only made noises when there was a guest in the house. But unfortuneatly he HATED all of my fam members in the house but me. Yes, basenjis are not for everyone but itsa shame to hear they are close 2 extinction. they are my favorite breed cause there is nothing else like them

  • I had a Basenji + Dalmation + Border Collie mix. She was the sweetest, friendliest dog, but SO much trouble!

  • @aimee7575 I´ve never heard about a Basenji Mix.... I thought that they dont have sex with other breeds

  • @Persianlady89 Thats a lie they DO breed with other dogs.

  • @zillajratomicray oohhh how cool! Then I will create a Basenji Pinscher Mix!!!! :D wuuhuu

  • its not that thier smart its that ur being a bitch to your dogs

  • супер

  • They're like felines. So adorable~

  • Mine was extremely smart. He learned how to open up the kitchen drawers to get himself onto the counter.

  • Thanks for sharing. I lost my 14 year old Basenji in February of this year. She was a great friend and companion. I hope to find two siblings from BRAT later this year. They are such wonderful dogs.

  • For sure Basenji are not for everyone. But, if you are a mindful person you shouldn't have any problems from them and MUCH, MUCH enjoyment from the kinship. These dogs are unbelievably smart, alert and physically gifted athletes. They also have a very desirable suite of traits, imo. They are largely quiet dogs, very good with allergic people, and, other traits like their personality that make them great friends.

  • @Kostly i saw this thing in the top ten stupid dogs this dog was second..

  • @simpel36 What is "stupid" defined as? Whatever it was, they're dead wrong.

  • @simpel36 That surprises me, I have a Jack Russel Basenji mix and he is one of the smartest dogs I know of, he gets into trouble occasionally, but he's still a smart dog.

  • yes i got a basenji my self, they got difficult character and this is why i i didnt want a pitbull. If somebody decides to have a dogg think twice about buying basenji , they r not for evrybody

  • lovely dog ..................

  • I have a basenji. He is seven and we adore him. Yes he is cheeky but he does what he is told. He does not like small kids and snaps at them as he thinks they are subordinates. He comes along at his own pace unleashed and does what he is told most of the time. Basenji's have their own mind though and that is one of the reasons we love him so much, he does not suck up to you all the time like a regular dog. I will always have them now. Their character is irrisistable!!!!!!!

  • I have one now and as a kid growing up I had a half breed one. l love them but they are not as good a breed for all people as some others. A Lab or a mix is often better if you have small kids. My Basenji like many Basenji's does not like babies or toddler's. She sneers at them in fear. She is prone to biting them out of that fear so I have to keep her away even though she is so cute the kids want to run right up to her.

  • They are crazy stubborn. We had one, and it got out, got hit by a car and survived, losing a few teeth. Tried to get out again, and got hit by a car a SECOND TIME! That thing would do anything to get out

  • @Andyman3k Our basenji tries that when he doesn't get enough exercise or enrichment. He is very smart when motivated with the right tools for him! What a wonderful breed!! Excellent running partner.

  • you are a dumb-ass.

  • lol they are dumb in the way they won't listen to you.

  • I'm loking for a dog. I think a Basenji mightbe the one, I'm obssed with this breed!

  • If you are looking for a basenji, you MUST be a experienced pet owner. They are not a lap dog..... basenji's have to be LEASHED walking at all times because their prey instinct is very strong and they will run and not look back. Plus, they shred your tp's like crazy and these guys need to be exercised at least once a day and you have to alot of patience with training cuz they are incredibly STUBBORN. Other than that... basenjis are awesome! I have TWO :)

  • @Apocoplyptic I HAVE ONE AND I TELL YOU THE BEST INVESTMENT I EVER MADE

  • I have a basenji mix. Unfortunately he barks, but still yodels.

  • These dogs are AWESOME. So damn intelligent!!!

They are so devious ripping up white paper or toilet paper... man they shred it and throw it around like confetti.

  • basenjis sound awesome but i recently got a shih tzu poodle two weeks ago and he spazzes when he gets paper...lol

  • just got mine a week ago! her name is ginger!

  • Cool mine was Carmen, imma tell you now, you will need to walk & run with your dog to get a better bond. just letting it out into the backyard is enough but if she gets loose she'll come back. There very loyal. Remember when mine got off the collar went home and left the front door open and she came crawling back in a few hours later. Was a couple MILES from my house also, still found her way back home. Just get a good bond and shell love you forever.

  • i have one dog that looks like a basenji but im not shouer

  • I don't have a basenji, but I beleive it's an extremely beautiful cute dog...

  • i always see these dogs together...im considering getting one...do they act better with a friend?

  • i have 2 yr old so cute

  • such beautiful dogs!! i also have a 3 yr old black+tan+white male. he is 18 inches to shoulder and wieghs about 30 lbs. his fav thing to do is go to the dog park. Beasnjis luv to play and run, so they love to do things like go to the park! His name is Pooh.

  • Rescued a 4-1/2 year old male from LA City shelter in Oct/'09 and love this dog soooo much! He was an owner surrender due to a newborn. (UNBELIEVABLE!) He is very well trained and absolutely adorable, playful, and loves to snuggle! I had 3 cats for the last 15 years, and dogs prior, but this guy makes me think I have wasted those 15 years when I could have had such a dog! He is a Basenji /Beagle mix ( lite beige/white) This dog insists on sleeping right next to me! He insists on human contact!

  • i met one crossed with a australian shepherd, sweetest looking dog (red with the blue speckles) ^^. he was so full of energy! so cute!

  • not a good "Beginner" breed. very high strung, and intelligent only to its own devices, not to appease its master. i have enough experience to give this breed a thumbs down.

  • i have had a Basenji for 3 months and she is SO well behaved. i think they are wonderful dogs and i never had a dog before and Carly (my Basenji) is my first dog i have ever had and she is my world. she knows shake, roll over, sit, down, spin, stay, come, and we are signing her up for agility. take that! Basenji's rock! I give them a thumbs UP!

    ~Sam

  • @wanj101982 You must not have ANY true experience with these dogs and probably have a Collie. Every person that has ever met my dogs has gotten, or tried to get a Basenji. They are brilliant and follow orders very well if trained by a caring owner who knows their personality's.. great with kids, very clean and despite the very common trait of running away if not properly yarded (Goldens, Shepards, Dobermans etc) they come VERY HIGHLY recommended to smart buyers. THINK ATTENTIVE, TRAINABLE CAT

  • 0:50 awesome dog!

  • intelligent,graceful no.obnoxious,fast,sloppy yes

  • that is cruel. u are wrong.

    i had 1 they r brilliant

get 1 urself and eventually you wuold cum 2 ur senses and wud ike him

  • i like basenjis though there runners.

  • Basnjis are SO PRETTY!

  • I like this breed more than i thought i would.

  • I was owned by a basenji for many years.

Basenjis aren't silent. They can make some of the most godawful noises you've ever heard. Also, young basenjis bark. Barking is a juvenile noise that we humans have encouraged in our pets and working dogs.

It seems that most of the brindle-coated basenjis are barkers as well.

  • Yeah, I hate the commercials they put on these things. I guess if people buy the product, the channel gets a profit or something. It works for blogs. Cool dog. Shedless, barkless, originally from Africa. It even has the characteristics of a cat, by using the bathroom in a designated spot. Expensive, however! I want one...minus the price, hahaha!

  • i got a basenji mix for free, she is mixed with pitbull and labrador retreiever, her name is Sophie and we( i am, mom doesnt know lol) are exscpecting a litter, she mated with my german shephard German(creative name huh lol).....that was kind of off topic huh? srry for wasting ur time!! X3

  • Malamutes don`t bark either....only howl...

  • i say ur wrong ....Malamutes barks pretty kinda alot...and very loud....i see everyday 3 Malamutes ...and everyday they bark at me ... and i also think that Basenji can be TRAINED 2 bark ...thats just a thought

  • to andrewkiki: It is pretty strange because our malamute doesn`t bark and I watched lots of videos and never heard a Malamute "barking" anywhere....at least I don`t call that barking.....that is just howling....

  • Basenji don't have the voice box to bark, can't do it. I've only heard it once and it was really an imitation of another dog and was unable to do it again. Howling, yodeling, yowling, growling, they can do.

  • i dont like the ad

  • The dove ad is so annoying! X___X

  • I was wondering if anyone could confirm that these dogs are good for people with allergies?

  • They are one of the few " hypo-allergenic"

dogs. I know that Westie terriers and poodle-crosses are also

  • @jager18903 portugese water dog too

  • Should be. They have no undercoat which helps with alergies, and no real shedding. They also have no real smell to them. Haven't washed my basenji in 6 months and she smells exactly the same as the day I washed her.

  • what a cool dog.

  • Its not true that basenjs are stand offish. My basenji sleeps curled up against my stomach, wags her tail when she is happy to see me, and is the most gentle, quiet dog ever. they are more like cats than dogs.

  • That's mainly why I got interested in this breed! I had to find a new home for my kitty when I moved in with the boyfriend (he is allergic to cats).

  • you got rid of your cat over a boy??

  • @indychick628 o.O people do that? lols jk

  • Our mix does too, but most of the time she doesn't like to cuddle much, which is what I guess they mean by "at times." Of course, ours is a basenji/weimeraner mix, so I can't say for sure that she behaves like a basenji, but from what I've heard she does.

  • They say these dog's can be "aloof" at times. What do they mean by that?

  • not affectionate, stand-offish, satisfied to be alone and not interested in humans

  • Joli toutou non???

    J'adore...

    °IIIIII°

  • I think people frequently confuse trainability with intelligence. many intelligent dogs are hard to train, and many trainable dogs are not exactly intelligent. It depends a lot on the purpose they were bred for, and how much interaction they were intended to have with people. terriers, for example, are intelligent, but hard to train, because their purpose usually involved problem solving, and working independently of people. my basenji is very intelligent, but she is more than a handful <3

  • I want one. I don't care if it's hard to train. I think we could work.

  • he's like a beagle,he's too full of energy and exciting things to look at instead of listening to their owner XD

  • They say these dog's can be "aloof" at times. What do they mean by that?

  • I own a Chihuahua/Basenji mix.....From the neck down a Basenji. No barking, plenty of yodeling, wrinkled forehead and all the traits of a Basenji both good and bad. However, his head is smaller and his eyes look just like the French actor, Jean Reno. A sad sack. People ask what breed he is...I tell them French Comedian.

  • LMAO, Jean Reno would love to read that! (Je lui dirais si je le croise) Thanks, your comment is hilarious =^_^=

  • Hard to train, but mine never does anything wrong, so there is nothing to "correct" I don't try to tell him what to do, and he doesn't give me any trouble in return.

  • "some what hard to train" ????? I think thats a HUGE understatement lol

  • @chinchillachic18 Very true, but once they recognize who you are (Master) they can truely be your best friend

  • @chinchillachic18 They aren't really hard to train to sit, stay, and, do their business outside. But, they will do what they please much of the time. LOL Gotta have plenty of treats.

  • i love these dogs, i had one that passed away the other day :( she was actually mixed with some jack russel. but she was amazing.

  • are they scenthounds or sighthounds

  • both :)

  • my basenji sleeps all day. she is no fun at all. but she is cute!

  • these dogs are amazing, mine is only 8 months old, but I love her, no matter what. she can be little too much from time to time, but on the other hand 90% of the time she is super adorable, and that makes up for everything. hard to train her, that is true, but i would not use the impression 'incredibly annoying' at all. having this as your first dog? well, join the club, as it is my first dog too. you might gonna have hard days from time to time, but it definitely worth it. think about it.

  • thanks i think i am up for it. i just cant get enough of these dogs so even if they can be a handful im sure i will be able to get through it. thanks again it encourages me that it is your first dog too and you don't seem to regret it

  • no regrets at the moment:) we got it with my partner together, but stayed alone with her. she is a real good friend, but all the below stated is true, you gottabe strict and firm with them, otherwise you will spoil them and you will get stuck with a lil monster for the next decade, and you wouldn't wanna do that for your own good...

  • I am considering making this my first dog. It sounds perfect..it doesn't shed..bark..or have a distinct smell. My mom won't put up with a dog that does. But i am worried because it sounds like this dog can be incredibly annoying...is it worth it?

  • They're not annoying, but I wouldn't have one for a first dog. You need to be very firm with Basenjis and know how to make doggy rules and stick with them, or you'll ruin the dog. They need to be taught right from an early age and shouldn't be trusted alone around cats etc. because of their instinct (you wouldn't put a terrier around small game). They're amazing animals, but do some research n make sure they're right for you, they can certainly be a handful sometimes.

  • yeah thanks a lot. I've been watching the dog whisperer now for a few months and have been reading some of his books. hopefully i will be ready

  • I had one of these as a kid. They are impossible to train. My parents even dished out thousands of dollars to get him professionally trained. Did not work. It would tear up the house. I still to this day think he had mental issues. Dog even attacked me one night for no reason. I would only recommend this dog if you have serious patience.

  • lol it attacked you?that shouldnt be a threat, look at the size of these dogs, they are tiny.they cant hurt you.

  • I was a young kid so yes it was a threat. Mine wasnt a small dog. It was a medium sized and you're wrong to say they cant hurt you because they can esp if you're only a young kid like I was.

  • size is not a factor-they were bred for thousands of yearsto b small AND strong-besides, you ever seen a staff bull terrier? think they're weak cos theyre small?

  • lol seen one?i HAVE 2 of them(staffies) but these dogs are not strong, staffys may be little but they are sturdy and with muscles

  • how d'u know they're not strong? and it'd b pretty pointless for a hunting dog to be weak

  • depends on what there hunting, anyway ussually hunting dogs exel in skill not strength, they use their noses, ears and eyes not muscles

  • i have 2 guarantee they'll kick your ass

  • lol no way their like the size of a jack russel you joking?they are a small dog

  • aww how cute i have a bisenji mixed with a minitcher dovermin pincher she is a hand full all she duss is runn around and tare up toylit paper lol but i love her her name is cloie

  • I have two Basenjis and they are they coolest dogs I have ever had or ever seen. They are both the cutest things ever, even though one of them misbehaves.

  • hey i was thinking of getting one but are they good for protection. like if it a buglar would come in would the dog protect your not?

  • I have a Basenji and he goes ballistic when any stranger comes to the house. I feel very safe with him. Any burglar, I'm sure wouldn't mess with him.
