Thanks you for the video! I just finished replacing the audio cable of one 1210, I all worked out fine. The soldering part was pretty hard, I have never done it before. But it works and sounds great now!!!
could you give me some advice?? my technics which my partner bought me second hand for xmas, when i set them up firstly the mixer didnt work...not a disaster it was a cheap mixer, so i linked them individually directly into my stereo through the aux to just listen to some music but the volume level is very low on both (we tried both in the stereo, its not the stereo as when you turn it from aux to say radio mode it works fine and the volume went to the proper level.what could be the problem??
@suz195 You need an input with a phono amp. You can't just connect turntables to an aux port (or CD/DVD/TAPE etc). The mixer has this already (if you connect it correctly that is). Remember to connect the tiny grounding cable too!
nice vidoe mate, i tried to re connect mine ( already had the wires going into the deck) so i tried to do a repair but every time i move the wires the sound goes on/off up/down, so im assuming its gonna be a loose connection on the deck end ( inside the deck) so im gonna have to pull her apart and see...
thanx for the clear video... do u know where i can get the cable i need from would appreciate the answer... cheers
This Looks Very Interesting To Watch And So Clearly Explained Too, I Think Us UK Geezers Explain Things The Best Don't You? I Can't Understand Why Technics Did Not Fit These Tables With RCA Connecting Sockets On The Back Like You Get On The Back Of Amplifiers Then That Way Changing Cables Would Be As Easy As Unplugging The Old Ones And Plugging The New Ones On. Do The Later Models Have Those RCA Panels Do You Know?
yeah man im gonna do this shit cause you just were so clear in the video. but im spanish, could you please spell the heat tool for me so i can translate it? i dunno wat it is.
I find that thin CD player cables last longer (but they are not as insulated), can I use them free of worry on my turntables? Even with the ground cable mod?

@JeevesTO Do you get any bass when you disconnect one of the RCA channels? I'm actually having a similar problem. I only get bass when one of the RCA channels is connected. As soon as I connect both, the bass drops.
What are the best audio quality cables to replace the originals with? I'm also thinking of eliminating the ground wire as shown on another vid. Would you recommend doing this? I've never had any buzzing problems with them and I use Serato. I just want to get the best sound possible.
@keet81 Sound quality may not be something you should be too concerned about when working with a program like SSL, that is since you are only listening to a tone. However you want to keep buzzing, and other forms of interference that may affect the audio signal/tone being picked up by your needle as this WILL mess up the programs operation. My question is: I find that thin CD player cables last longer (but they are not as insulated), can I use them free of worry? Even with the ground cable mod?
you sir are the man! Just followed both your vids and it worked perfectly. never even soldered before! insane amounts of respect from Dublin, IRL for posting this video -thumbs up
what an awesome video! One of my turntables already had an rca cable replaced and looses audio signal at times so I want to do this today. I'm just really worried I'll screw it up lol. I really dont think I can access a soldering iron does that leave it impossible to be done or is there another alternative?
Bought a 1200 off eBay that came with faulty wires; this video saved a very expensive purchase! I had issues getting the underside cover off (my crappy driver was stripping the screws) but I was able to get enough screws off to pry it halfway off and still access the main parts I needed. Now I have clear, stereo sound. Thank you so, so very much for this!!!
thats helpful, but i could'nt ever mess with me technics, how much is gonna cost me to get both me 1210's fixed(replace audio wires on both technics)? really helpful video,thanks........
Hi.... Thanks very much for the Vid.... wonder if you could help. not only have I replaced the standard leads with new ones, I also need to extend the main earth cable..... firstly... what earth wire is required? and do you know of where I can get some from? I have seen various vids on here where they dont have a separate earth... dont fancy that myself....
Top stuff as usual James. But did no one notice you put the same audio cables back on and not your new ones?? ha ha. Your a legend though mate and im sure many would agree!!
The RCA cable I purchased has it looks like three wires inside it. The outer wire which is silver in color (I believe it's the ground) an then two separate casings inside on the red channel there is a red wire and a black wire and on the white channel there is a white wire and a black wire both wires inside the casings are copper what do I do with the black wire in each channel???
@cadetyo ah you have balanced audio cable, not a problem just use the red and white from each and the ground outer wire and just cut the black ones off they are only needed as a "cold" in a balanced configuration.
hello,no ofence but i think notice some small error ! when you retourned cable clip prior retourning bottom plate you put in in wrong way (in way of front panel)cause on video 1 cables going directly outer (in way of rear panel) But anyway yr video is very usefull for us amateurs!rgds
I bought an SL1200 MK2 about 6 years ago and was told that only one channel was working (the right one) and it was a $150 fix... it sat in it's box and i never got it fixed. I recently got the itch to listen to some vinyl and started looking online to see if maybe i could fix it myself... then i found your videos! You explained it so simply and it ended up costing me $14.99 for a soldering iron and 20 minutes of my time! Thanks for the great videos!
Excellent video! I have an old technics sld202 from the early 80s which I just play records on and it still works perfectly, it has the same tone arm as the SL1200/1210. Wondering if its worth replacing the old leads to some new OFC shielded cables?
Well I had a closer look and noticed I got it wrong. Cable clip then was mounted in a second... One hour wasted trying to put it on the wrong way. I was at least smart enough to try it on the old broken cable. Everythings working perfect now. Thanks for doing these videos. Btw, have you ever relube the needle poo up lamp so that it pops up nice and slow like a new would?
thanks for your guides. i did the height adjustment greasing yesterday and today I replace the rca cables because the left channel was faulty, not in the plug, in the actual wire somewhere. used the dmm in continuity to find out.
HOWEVER, seriously, the cable clamp. i've spent 1 hour trying to put the removed, original cables back in it, just for practice. hardest thing so far :) are there any tricks? fingers are red and im seriously considering filing it down a bit to make it easier...
I had my turntables serviced twice in the past for replacement of the audio cables and paid a lot of money. You broke it down so simple. It took me less than two hours to complete. Thanks your the man.
LEGEND!!! i watched a bunch of your videos...i remember rewiring cables on my technics ages ago before youtube existed...makes me wanna do it all again although sayin that probably a lot more fiddly than you make it look haha. thanks for your videos!
Excellent, I just succesfully changed my phono cable didnt think id be able to do it but thanks to the great step by step video guide, it was fairly simple, BIG UP VIPERFRANK you saved me at least £100 .
Thanks alot for puttin this up mate. My decks have had f'd wires for ages + I stopped using them and got cd decks. Just re-wired them now and they r crystal clear! Big up ;-)
Great video, but you might remind viewers to pass the new cable through the round cover plate before soldering the cable to the PC board, in case the connectors on the cable end are too big to pass through the hole in the plate.
Also, you can buy little soldering clamp stands with clips that will hold the wires while you work. Makes the job easier.
Here in N. America, the plastic tie is called a zip-tie or a zap-strap.
Thanks for posting this, it's very helpful. However, in the name of constructive criticism, a few points:
First, remind us to unplug the T/T before removing the platter!
Second, what size Philips screws? Number 1, number 2, some of each?
Third, it's good to know that the outer wire is the shield of the shielded cable, not the ground, although it's connected to ground. The inner wire carries the signal.
Fourth, a side cutter is not needle-nose pliers. It's safer to use the right tool.
Excellent tutorial once again, just one point, if you still have your turntable lid it would be better to use this as support for the deck instead of the cushion, ie, remove the platter, headshell etc, then put the lid on and flip it over, this is preferable to using the cushion.
I don't have that table [I'm a Dual person] but what you showed and described was very thorough and informative indeed -- Thanks for taking the time and making the less than experienced vinyl lover see that this cable swap can easily bv accomplished thru and with the help of your video- Well done and entertaining ---thanks!
Hey man, I can't thank you enough for these vids. I have a Technics 1500 and this was similar enough that i was able to replace my phono cables on the 2nd try. Thank you SO much! I now have a working turntable and can enjoy my records for the first time in years. You rock!
I don't usually post on clips, but then very rarely do I decide to open up one of my 'children' and take a hot soldering iron to them for the first time.
Your clear and concise video made me believe I could 'do it myself', and I did. I bought the table to use with Serato and was gutted when it wouldn't pick up the signal - replaced the phono leads and it's as good as new.
Cheers mate, much and genuine appreciation for the vid.
Thanks a lot man!! Both my 1210 are screwed since 2 heavy basement-partys. Thanks thanks, gonna try it in a couple of hours. And somehow i knew that you are into drumandbass. We like fiddling around he? ;-) Good old record, reminds me to drop "Speedball" again sometimes :-) thxn!
one of the best tutorials, really clear and not taking anything for granted. Do you have one about replacing the earth/ground wire (not removing, just replacing.)
thank you very much!!! for your kind word and i am glad the video was helpful to you.
BTW some people have asked me to do some videos on how to solder, basic tips and tricks that kind of thing, i think that solder is something that everyone should know how to do its so handy to know when you need to make repairs and making your own audio cables and that.
Frank,, I noticed the replacement audio cables are facing forward. Does that make it easier to route in a DJ setup? Great videos BTW, very helpfull stuff, Thanks.
@viperfrank can you just cut the tips off at the top and tie new ones on i think the shortage is at the top of my wires. instead of going thru all that and if that does not fix it then try the stage that you did
Much respect for the video from Toronto, Canada. Saved on the cost of sending it in for repair (1 channel not working on the RCA's) but the cost was not the vital issue it was having my deck in such a short time of it having the problem. No DJ likes being without a deck. Great details regarding the repair..... serious props to this video from across the pond.
hi there, thank you very much for your kind words, and i'm glad you was able to fix your turntable, i know what you mean i cant go without my turntable for very long, i like to be able to think AH i got a 20 minutes till i got to go out, ill have a mix.
people sometimes say to me why do you do these videos? you are not getting anything for it, but when i know i'v helped somebody and i receive kind comments like your, thats what make me want to do it.
hi there, thanks for your comment, 15 quid is a bit steep for just the standard cables, don't get me wrong the original technics cables are very good but they are a bit basic, heres what i recommend for 15 quid 10 quid even you could get one of those high quality 2 meter phono to phono leads witch have gold plated connecters, cut one of those in half and wire one half into each table, that way the plugs them selves are factory soldered less work for you. hope this helped, thanks for commenting.
Good video, i followed all the directions and did this to my turntable, and now it works great, my left rca cable was not working for my serato so i found this video and did it my self, Thanks alot you saved me $120. thanks again keep posting these videos i have alot to do on my old technics 1200 mk2.
This video really helped me out a lot. One of my 1200's had a short in the audio wiring and watching this really helped me repair my 1200 and it works just as fine now.
awesome tutorial! I was able to fix my technics which has been broken for months now. Very helpful! Just one minor thing though. On part 1, you color coded one of the screws wrong. But it should be obvious to anyone actually removing all the screws anyway. Big thanks again!
hi there, the tool i use is just a sharp craft knife, but any sharp knife will do it like the knife from a multi tool or like a stanley knife or something like that, hope this info was helpful.
Hi, I used your video to repair my audio cables from a technics turntable I bought used yesterday (old old old MK-II)
I'm happy to report I successfully replaced my audio cables and the sound is crystal clear thanks to you. I Cannot thank you enough (I also repaired my ground while I was at it)
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! This video was EXTREMELY helpful.
is this repair somewhat similar to replacing the ground wire? I bought two used technics one of which only plays on the right speaker the other is _missing_ a groundwire.
Really well explained, thank you very much for this video. It's gonna help me so much. I'm having problem's with my 1200MK2 really messed up audio cords and I will need to replace them thanks again. :)
Whats the minimum recommended cable spec to use? Must they be as thick as the original ones or could I get away with thinner cables?
TheManifestmusic 1 week ago
@TheManifestmusic As long as the cable adequately shielded, and the cable impedance is under half an Ohm you will be fine to use any thickness cable.
I only used this thickness cable because it was all I had and it fit into the connectors that I had.
Hope this helped.

i sem to be getting no bass from one of my tables, is this a common problem and could u help out.
JeevesTO 4 months ago
@JeevesTO Hi there, hmm, that's not a common problem as far as I know.
that doesn't sound like an audio cable problem.
if only one of the turntables has the problem, try taking the cartridge off the normal one and try it on the dodgy one.
also check the wires in the cartage (if its a head shell type).
failing that swap the decks mixer channels round it might be a problem with the channel on the mixer.
hope this helped and thank you for your comment.
nice one!!!

Excellent tutorial once again, just one point, if you still have your turntable lid it would be better to use this as support for the deck instead of the cushion, ie, remove the platter, headshell etc, then put the lid on and flip it over, this is preferable to using the cushion.

my old dual 704 has nice chinch-cables on it (high quality ones with gold-cover).
would you recommend to remove those (the device is broken) and apply it to a technics?
I'm hoping for an answer!

Man, and I thought I was fucked when I today noticed that my right channel is dead, since those damn cables can't just be replaced like that.
Thank u good sry, have to go get some soldering equipment now :)

one of the best tutorials, really clear and not taking anything for granted. Do you have one about replacing the earth/ground wire (not removing, just replacing.)

thank you very much!!! for your kind word and i am glad the video was helpful to you.
BTW some people have asked me to do some videos on how to solder, basic tips and tricks that kind of thing, i think that solder is something that everyone should know how to do its so handy to know when you need to make repairs and making your own audio cables and that.
thank you very much for your comment!!

no Thank you! Do you have a grounding removal as well?
djmissm18 2 years ago

Is is best to get the original 1210 leads, have found them for 15 quid?
26flames 2 years ago
hi there, thanks for your comment, 15 quid is a bit steep for just the standard cables, don't get me wrong the original technics cables are very good but they are a bit basic, heres what i recommend for 15 quid 10 quid even you could get one of those high quality 2 meter phono to phono leads witch have gold plated connecters, cut one of those in half and wire one half into each table, that way the plugs them selves are factory soldered less work for you. hope this helped, thanks for commenting.
viperfrank 2 years ago
Cheers mate, will do that and will test the decks with planet dust for maximum affect, let you know how it goes. Top vid!
26flames 2 years ago
thnks man, i was quoted 80 quid 2 do that,, cost me 15 after watching that, much respect......so simple wen you know how...

hi there, the tool i use is just a sharp craft knife, but any sharp knife will do it like the knife from a multi tool or like a stanley knife or something like that, hope this info was helpful.

This video was EXTREMELY helpful.
juntistik 2 years ago
is this repair somewhat similar to replacing the ground wire? I bought two used technics one of which only plays on the right speaker the other is _missing_ a groundwire.
juntistik 2 years ago
i think you follow the same way...you just replace the ground wire (or put one in) instead of the audio cables
