Without a doubt Ponting in his prime was the best fielder in the world. Yes, Jonty Rhodes was also good but he was primarily a shot stopper fielding close in. Ponting is obviously a good close in fielder but he is also good on the boundary. His throw is bullet like and i remember him many times sprinting along the boundary and diving full length to save a four.

Rob, I've been looking for a particular Ponting inspired Run Out. It was his first overseas assignment as test captain (so we are looking at the 2004 season) in Sri Lanka. They two teams played a ODI series before that. In one of the games, Ponting made Marvan Atapattu Run Out from Mid Wicket. Blew my mind then, blows my mind thinking of it now, but I couldn't find it in this video or the extended one. Wondering if you have the series at all by any chance.

Cricket is a team game. So in time we compare Sachin & Ricky, I know who I'd have in my team. Being a run machine is one thing. Being able to turn a match on its head with run outs like this is far more valuable. Bowlers win matches and catches win matches. Ponting's fielding is miles ahead of Sachin, not to mention being a Captain with huge responsibility given the high expectations of our team, big match player ('03 final etc) and the amount of blinders he has taken to win games for the team,
