RAY BUCHANAN(not Ray Crockett) was tremendous against randy moss. Atlanta Falcons cornerback Ray Buchanan showed randy moss what-was-what and who is who!!!!
The Atlanta Falcon's defense was superb in the 2nd half & overtime of this game!
Ray Crockett, Eugine Robinson, Keith Brookings, Chuck Smith were excellent! Chris Chandler, Tony Martin & Robert Mathis performed pretty well, too. But it was most probably Tim Dwight who saved the afternoon and season for the Falcons!!
To this day, twelve years later, i have not seen a kick returner at the pro-level have a more CLUTCH effort in such a huge road game!!! Without TD, the Falcons would have lost!
Remember my pessimistic dad thought the Falcons had a snowball's chance in hell (well I suppose everyone did) to win this game. One of my most favorite early sports memories.
EVERYONE ITS CALLED THE VIKINGS CURSE!!! they have been hexed!! they're a great team but nothing goes their way when it comes to big games.... they always get fucked over somehow
This is why you play the game and why we watch the game. People predicted a Vikings victory, but when they saw was the 14-2 Atlanta Falcons come in and beat the Vikings. This was no upset, the Falcons were 14-2 i mean how many teams go 14-2 and not get the #1 seed? The only other timed this has happened was 2004-2005 season when the Pittsburgh Steelers were 15-1 and the New England Patriots were 14-2 and like 1998, #2 beat #1. The Falcons must be given there due, they hung tough.
Worst Viking memory to this day. Can't blame it all on Anderson. Moss's near TD, and our D was scorched during the ATL final 4th quarter drive. Randle was out most of this game.
Moss Dropped TD was big. bigger was Dennis Green Brian Billick throwing the ball with a minute left in the 1st half backfired. They went conservative for the rest of the game. what happened to there defense is as inexplicable as the stupid missed FG
@grinningchicken : Agreed. Moss's near miss of a TD catch + Atlanta scoring at the end of the 2nd quarter were HUGE plays.....blame Denny Green.....what an idiot!!!
I think a Broncos-Vikings Superbowl would have been a better game, but I think the Falcons played the better game here and it wasn't a fluke. People called it a huge upset, but they forget the Falcons were 14-2, and coach Dan Reeves with his years of experience made all the right calls. Something that can't really be said about Dennis Green and the Vikings.
It sucks for Vikings fans and their players, but the better team won on this particular day.
@buttthrax I know, you have 45 seconds left, the game is tied, and you have THE HIGHEST SCORING OFFENSE IN NFL HISTORY, why would you take a knee. and the fumble before halftime, that is when they should have taken a knee instead of going for the bomb from your own 20 despite being up 20-7
@zenmachinefilms : A MN vs Denver game would have been far more entertaining. Two teams that went 15-1. Remember Atlanta didn't score their 1st offensive TD until 2 minutes inside the THIRD quarter. As for The Sheriff (Denny Green)....he was AND still is an idiot!
@zenmachinefilms i see where u r comeing from, Reeves was a pretty good coach, and yes the falcons where good 14-2 is a good record, but if u go player by player comeparing those two teams, the vikings where 100 times better, the falcons winning wasnt because they played well, it was because the minnesota vikings r the biggest chokers in all of pro sports
@zenmachinefilms I don't think very many people gave the Falcons the respect they deserved that season. The 1998 Denver Broncos episode of Americas game has a part where they were talking about how huge and embarrasing of an upset it would've been had the Falcons beat them. It was a 14-2 vs 14-2 matchup, I fail to see why that would be such an unbelievable upset.
@zenmachinefilms Agreed on all points. The better team won that game, but the Vikings would've given Denver hell on a neutral field. That would've been an offensive Super Bowl for the ages. Too bad it never happened.
@zenmachinefilms While I agree that the Vikes were a good team that year, a team can certainly win nearly all of their games and not be a great team. Look at the Packers from this year. Lost only one game, but to me they struggled through a majority of the season and had a really easy schedule. Was not a shock at all to see the Giants beat them. Those that know about football were expecting that to happen
From watching this you'd never know the Vikings could have won the game in regulation with 42 seconds and 2 timeouts left. Instead yellow belly Denny Green had Cunningham kill the clock. It's all down the memory hole.
The hype around Moss during his rookie year was out of control.
"Randy this, Randy that...yeah the Vikings d sucks and gave up a td, but tis ok, that just means Moss coming back...Cunning cocks-FIRES DEEP downfield MOSSSSSSSSSSSS TOUCHDOWNNNNNNNNNNNNN!! DA BOMBBBBBB!"
the vikings should of won and now they are 0 and 5 in the nfc championship games because the saints had to make a fieldgoal again they have to be mad but i think the colts will win the super bowl
@viperdk28 The guy your referring is Atlanta Falcons Cornerback Ray Buchanan. The reason Ray Buchanan was not flagged for running into the kicker is because Gary Anderson established two feet to the ground before Buchanan ran into him. Buchanan came dangerously close but because Anderson established two feet on the ground, no flagged was warranted.
Their where inclredible knotheaded descicions all through out this game by the Vikings. With the ball at around mid-field, did'nt the Vikings also take a knee with something like 18 second before halftime? Robert Smith screwdup with running out of bounds and stopping the clock as well ....something like that.
@6400az no that was before overtime. They should have take that knee before halfetime instead of trying to air it out from their own 20 yard line. We all know what happened on that one
Alright, take your word for it. Thanks. Was a diehard Viking fan throughout the 70's, by the time 1998 came around, I was already burned out with dissapointments. I just rememeber the mistakes they made in that 98' game, not even a pre-season JV highschool team would make them. This was beyond the Vikings curse if you aske me.
@viperdk28 Oh come on man! The Vikings blew it...they ALWAYS blow it. If that was a legitimate gripe, it would've been a point of discussion from everyone who watched it. Not a nitpicking Vikings fan who's crying over spilled milk. C'mon man!!!
Let's hope with crossed fingers to crush the Saints to make it Super Bowl, plus I would see Vikings in the Super Bowl for the first time ever in 2010 if we win the NFC championship game.
@steveb234 Could not agree more....if Robert Griffith holds on the the easy interception last drive of regulation that tied the game, even AFTER Anderson choked up the place, we still would have held on. Cunningham was choking it off in the fourth quarter as well...Chris Carter was wide open several times but ball was forced to Moss in double coverage....Robert Smith put the team on his back and ran us down the field behind our huge o-line to set up Anderson's choke job. What a disappointment
Didn't Denny take a knee with 45 secs left from his 25 yrd line in the 4th to instead go to OT? Brutal.

Remember, people, this game was to decide who would be the victims of the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl.
Most football fans were expecting a Vikings/Broncos matchup, and certainly Minnesota would have posed a greater challenge to Denver.
The Falcons merely spared the Vikings a fifth SB franchise defeat.

I love how they edited out when Anderson missed, that a Falcon player ran into him, and the penalty wasn't call.
The fact that we took a knee to force overtime should have cost Dennis Green his job on the spot.
Everyone knows damn well had the Vikings won the game, the Broncos would not have won the Super Bowl.
