  • Scary...why the hell couldn't the test card be of something nice, like a butterfly or some food, instead of that damn devil clown and that creep of a child!!!!!????? :D

  • I feel nine years old again.

  • I used to watch the test card. I dont know what for.

  • @MrAndrewGCGibson

I think watching it is kinda what it must be like to be dead. But yeah, I could never look away.

  • wtf was the beeping for??? used to fall asleep during a movie, then the fkn beep would wake up the entire house.

and the test cars...what the hell was that green thing?? i used to think it was the skull of a monster. as a kid it scared me more than nightmare on elm street that damn test card. :(

  • god that test card used to shit scare me as a child

  • the test patteren will always give others nightmares

  • A lovely bit of nostalgia!

I remember waking up in the middle of the night having fallen asleep on the sofa with the national anthem playing or the test card bleeping away!

  • "the radio 1 rap show"... my god. tim westwood was at it then too!

  • Broadcasted on 14th October 1995.

  • The End tanslate as ''Why you son of a bitch, stupid, ass, and other bad words''

  • Testcards freaked me out as a kid

  • すごい

  • What year is this?

  • @keithc1977 ~1995~

  • Im realy unhappy about the digital switchover =[ they should put more analogue channels in! sky tv dies if it rains virgin just randomly dies whenever it feels like and if your not in a good spot freeview buggers aswell, atleast with analogue it doesnt completely cut out

  • miss the weather map like that

  • October 13th 1995

  • flashback! i feel 5/6 again :D test card used to freeak me out -_-

  • Was it usual for test card f to be shown after closedown?

I always thought it was, but after seeing many videos showing a blank screen and tone after closedown, I have not been so sure.

  • The BBC1 ident used here (a glass globe played off a LaserDisc) was used from 1991 to 1997.

  • a CGI glass glob, just to correct everyone who thought it was a real glass globe :)

  • it's not the girl that scares people i think it's the clown and the beeping noise lol

  • @skyd900 I am scared of the girl, imagine it zooms to her face, then it melts into a skull.

  • I would have to watch Testcard F on a full TV screen in the middle of the night to find out. Unfortunately I have never been to England.

  • Again From America. How can 7 year old Carol Hesse give anyone nightmares?

  • trust me, when watching that thing at 3am, it CAN give you nightmares. Maybe not as effective on a PC though.

  • Hey Aidan, do you have any BBC closedowns?

  • Yep. a COW-globe closedown from the night of Live Aid, a 1992 closedown at 12:45am and a 1994 closedown from that year's FA cup or summat at 2:35am!!!

Will try to get them uploaded within the next few weeks.

They were on VHS, heavn knows what's on those 300+ Betamax tapes in my lock-up garage!!! XD

  • What year is the COW globe closedown from?

  • It's at 4:15am and I suggest you look for "Live Aid" in Google to work out the exact date :)

  • Hey Aidan, that COW globe closedown is from 13th July 1985. Just 5 days before I was born! When were you born?

  • august 12th 1990 - a Sunday.

I don't have any closedowns from anywhere near that date but I have the Sheffield Star TV listings for that day and the closedowns were as follows:

BBC1: 1:35-1:40am (surprisingly late for a BBC closedown on Sunday at the time!!!)

    BBC2: 11:55pm

ITV - Yorkshire Television region - 24 hours

    Channel 4: 2:30am

  • Could you upload those clips please?

  • I would but I am very VERY bbusy with coursework and trying to live off a tiny budget as I am at University now, so I don't have much time or money to bother uploading clips from VHS or Betamax.

Plus, while trying to repair my ruined Betamax recorder (as it refused to rewind tapes), I accidentally ruined it some more, so it is now beyond repair - so I am trying to save some money to bid on another cheap working Betamax machine on eBay. So do what everyone else would do i.e. *WAIT*

  • Aidan, why do you have to be such a twat? All he asked was to upload the clips, you didn't need to go into a patronising charade about precisely why you couldn't upload them. People are so miserable compared to 10 years ago.

  • Because otherwise he would have kept on pestering me if I didn't tell him why i couldn't upload the clips. I am very stressed at the moment

but now I have another thing delaying me uploading the clips to youtube: lack of funds and a broken ferguson DVD recorder (well, when it's made by a french company - Thomson - who own ferguson, what do you expect? Next time I'm buying a JVC. A 1983 ferguson videostar - made by JVC - is still working today!!! that Ferguson DVD recorder didnt last 6 months)

  • I think that's unfair saying 'he would have kept on pestering me'. People are so mean these days, drives me up the wall.

  • well maybe I did use the wrong word - "pestering". i'm not just uploading the clips just for him, I do genuinely want to share those clips with everyone on the net, as was always my intention, but it's just knowing my continuous bad luck that I get delay after delay.

I might have seemed miserable, but that's because you can't hear my tone of voice. i only typed in that style just to make a point clear.

PS, i am miserable now, as I don't have much to be cheerful about.

  • and one final thing - i need to know how to get access to some decent editing software, as I want to make my own channel ident to go on the front of the archive presentation clips I will upload, which will be birds-eye views of a video recorder meachnism loading (at the start) and unloading (end) a videotape - one for VHS and one for Betamax, depending on which video format the clip came from as both had different video mechanisms.

but I should be overcoming these problems by April.

  • This closedown is on Dailymotion. Centralsouth actually Uploaded this

  • Can you post the address? The only 1953 wings ident I can see is a truncated West continuity announcement and it is a clear fake.

  • could be a fake Glamking! Or it could be from the BBC's own archive, as many TV insiders are uploading this kind of thing (such as youtube user "granadagreg")

  • And also there is a BBC2 closedown from 1979 that you could be putting online.

  • Could you add anymore closedowns like some earlier BBC1 closedowns from 1953-1978 please. that would be great.

  • 1953? There were obviously no video recordings from as early as then (the first home video recorders came around in 1972). The only pre-1978 BBC1 closedown I've seen is from christmas 1974.

It is extremely unlikely that there would be any closedowns from pre 78 uploaded to youtube , as the only home video system in the UK then was the Philips N1500, and those machines were EXTREMELY unreliable and the tape wore out quickly.
