  • Oli MBT FORSURE I am a former crew of such a vehicle and I might add a formidable beast for her age, she commqands the respect of other newer tanks.

  • Does South Africa have a heavy tank?

  • @Lukos0036 no, it doesnt need one

  • Wow, South Africans are very good at armor and anti-armor...

  • do you have the number of the new version in service? the mk1b with the new sensor turret in front of the commanders copula? - iv'e heard 24, 44 etc etc - then someone said that only the demonstrator ones have that technology and not to expect more than 2-5 models running with the full system and additiional armour.

hope you can help with better factual info.

    thanks

  • ok, for sure.

but there's always a threat - you know? rememebr when they intercepted that ship in durban with 12 T55's on board and confiscated it? - the same thing could happen anytime - who knows when someone north side secretly takes delivery of even 50 pieces of highly advanced armour like the T90s ror anything in the same era? intelligence doesn't always find these things out - & im sure that in the new SA, not much effort is given to intelligence services as much as we did before

  • I reckon the Olifant is good enough for what SA needs :-)

  • @TankNutDave If the requirement is what SA needs, SA doesn't need a hell of a lot. It's surrounded by countries that don't have their shit together. I reckon SA keeps it weapons development for a private export industry.

  • @PrometheanRunGood I'm seeing a nuclear program ( think one is implemented ) in the future. Can't wait for it.

  • @TankNutDave It is a Heavy Battle Tank isn´t it ?

  • @Domenek82 no such thing anymore, its either medium or main battle tank, olifant is medium, go to my site mate, its in the tank section

  • @GraffitiBombing247 actually there were 10 T54/55's - 8 of them were sent to Rhodesia and formed the nucleous of RhAC ("E" Sqn) and the 2 command and control varients were kept in S/A. One of them is on display at the International War Museum in Jo-Berg. Cheers!

  • ja, i think it was unveiled at AA&D 2000 - or 2002? cant remember exactly -

i'm just still figuring out why the hell they are not ordering it??? it's the same hull right? just a new turret / gun and engine.

I mean, I know that the arms embargo is over, but why not keep on using SA equipment? why even waste the resourses by making the new turret system - then the government decides not to order? - probably challenger 2's in the near future ... thats the last news i heard

  • Well they arent building CR2 anymore, I know the guys packed everything way. To be honest there is no real threat to SA from any other African state as non of them have anything more than a few rusting T-55's which the Centurion can handle. South Africa has always used wheeled fighting vehicles with a good deal of success.

  • if only they would make the effort to give it a 120m cannon, they wouldnt need to replace it with any foreign stuff! - the latest version looks mad!! i thinks it's called mk1b optimal????

  • The Mk2 has a 120mm smoothbore

  • 5stars! beautiful tanks trekking on the veldt! thankyou for engine sounds instead of rock music...im sick of m-tv tank videos...fantastic interesting cool-milwaukee (m-60a3tts)

  • Its a up-graded Centurion, building it on to the Centurion tank at the moment :-)

  • Nice upload. never seen this one before
