I love this film and think that it's one of the most overlooked and underrated Fantasy films since 2000 (along with Stardust and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen). Visual effects were decent. Nicole Kidman was stunning and very beautiful villainess. Dakota Blue Richards and Daniel Craig were great too. Hope they'll make a sequel

But they are indeed trying to make this film. They wouldn't dare let the ending be as "To be continued..." as they did without planning a sequel. It would lose the studio a lot of credibility.
You guys do know that this movie was supposed to be like 3 hours in length but New Line fucked up majorly. Especially the ending. They cut out VITAL sequences.

half right. they also cut it because the ending for alot of testers was difficult to take in (it truely is sad) and if they had left it in and the sales of the movie were the same, they would have a cliff hanger but no sequal. yet the funny part is that the movie didn't do as well as expected b/c of the cut ending (that was one of the major reasons people didn't go see it)

I know what you mean, it pisses the hell out of me. But I'm pretty sure they were forced to do it because of time. And they simply hadn't realized it before it was actually in theatres. Also the part at 00:47 is included in the first novel not the second, it just wasn't in the movie which is very annoying.
I love this trailer!!! but it could be nice if you could update the trailer with the final film clips, so there's not any green screen or art work in the trailer. But else the trailer is FANTASTIC. A or 9.5/10 from me!
I love the movie, it made me read the books, and now i can't wait for the movies to come out (ending was brilliantly thrilling for me :O), i really hope they decide to shoot all 3 books.

Movie is based on a books by Philip Pullman, who is an atheist, and wants children to read his books and decide against God and the kingdom of heaven. An article written about the author calls him the 'most dangerous author ni Britian. Do not see this movie or buy his books.

If we allow our children to read/watch The Golden Compass, we should at the very least, talk through the issues and spiritual themes it raises. Use it to teach the importance of having a sound biblical worldview that cannot be shaken by the manipulative writings of an atheist.

Movie was really bad :( sorry guys, I was really hoping with every screed of energy within me that it would be good, but it wasn't. Northern Lights was so far ahead that you couldn't even compare it with the film. See it if you want, but don't expect to be wowed or moved in any way. It just doesn;t happen :(
they don't kill god in this movie. they kill him in the third book of the series, the amber spyglass. The whole series of books was a sort of antithesis of the Narnia series, which was deeply religious, and Philip Pullman hated.

Watching the Golden Compass is a fine choice for a kid. So is the Chronicles of Narnia. Schindler's list? Probably not. The Golden Compass I wouldn't give to a 5 year old - but to a tween (which I'm guessing the audience you were mentioning) it should be fine, which is what I was thinking about .

No "that The Dark Material is inappropriate for kids to read or see" wasn't the point. In terms of what I said earlier about kids and movies. But, actually, the books do have many negative things in it, not necessarily against Christianity and its beliefs, but simply on society and behavior. Promoting a do-as-you-want, selfish and hateful attitude.
However, most of the arguments against The Dark Material series, is directed toward the wrong persons, while trying to warn the right persons. Non-Christians won't ever really get the point, and in most debates in online formats like this, won't convince them anyway.
I think that most kids (at least the ones I've encountered) are pretty intelligent. More intelligent than I usually give them credit for. Still, a lot may not get the references, simply enjoying the book for what it is - a high fantasy novel. And for those who do, so what? It may do them some good to hear a different point of view. I certainly don't think its going to do the average tween or teenager much more harm than what they see and hear in the news and in popular media nowadays anyway.

Summary in English: the plot was as deep as the character of Tintin in the comics. This film was a huge disappoitment; pretty steampunk scenes spiced with atheistic propaganda. Either the book will make me puke, too, or this was the worst translation to a film ever. Sorry folks.

well im pretty sure its because the books (an awesome trilogy btw) were written by atheist author philip pullman, and throughout the books he includes some anti-christian undertones.

This movie is not Anti-God, It's about the struggle against man made organizations, religious or otherwise, who would stamp out free will, it is about scary truth versus comfortable lies.
The protesters of this movie are simply scared that kids will read Pullman's books and ask questions, questions they are afraid to answer. It is another step we as a civilization must take to face the scary truths

I saw this movie yesterday and LOVED IT!! I loved the demons and wished I had one too.. they were cute.. and the armored polar bears were ADORABLE!! Nicole Kidman was lovely as always.. but the end was a dissapointment.. hopefully there will be a sequel =)

I've read the books and can break the air of stupidness around the film.
1st Its a book thats in the fiction section.
2nd The book never once has God actually as a character.
3rd They kill the Metatron an Angel pretending to be God, Gods impostor is who they kill God isn't even in the story directly.
4th A group of Catholic Bishops said that the story was in line with good moral teaching contra Donahue...

If you don't like the idea of the film don't watch it, its that simple. If we allow our children to read/watch The Golden Compass, we should at the very least, talk through the issues and spiritual themes it raises. Use it to teach the importance of having a sound biblical worldview that cannot be shaken by the manipulative writings of an atheist.

We should be aware of it, but not exposed to it, you would be surprised how easily once desensitized it is not see the dangers in many of the traps that are set for us. (you may be already aware of it.)
Most of all children should not see this movie, it will cause their imaginations run extremly wild wanting to get into that stuff secretly longing to be able to do that kind of thing. It is what the deciever(satan)wants. Remember he wants to take as many people with him to hell as possiable.

riding pure dreams, i do agree with much you say about God. BUT! this movie will not change the hearts of the truest belivers. if a movie can change one of the most personal choices you make, then you really didnt believe in it anyway- it was a farce.
If truly committed people go to see the movie, then their veiws wont change. And trying to make athiests on youtube become christians is about as pointless as it would be for them to try and make you an athiest.

Movie was really bad :( sorry guys, I was really hoping with every screed of energy within me that it would be good, but it wasn't. Northern Lights was so far ahead that you couldn't even compare it with the film. See it if you want, but don't expect to be wowed or moved in any way. It just doesn;t happen :(

they don't kill god in this movie. they kill him in the third book of the series, the amber spyglass. The whole series of books was a sort of antithesis of the Narnia series, which was deeply religious, and Philip Pullman hated.
I do not think it is fair to make children stories with religious propaganda perfectly acceptable, and children stories with anti-religious propaganda controversial.

Then those people need to know that they don't have to let one movie or book dictate what their beliefs are. There are things in these books that I don't agree with, but instead of letting that change how I really feel, I just get past it and enjoy the rest of the book.
It is the people who are so afraid of the power this movie could potentially have, that are giving it all that power.

The thing is though Atheist do not understand what a Christian really is they can take religion away but they cannot take our walk with Jesus away, and our friendship with him. On another point, true, its not like seeing a movie or reading a book is immediately going to change one's point of view right aftwords. But it most definitely influences the path of the way one thinks. Moreso, that of a book or movie that may disguise its meaning with a fantasy filled storyline. Watching the Golden Compass is a fine choice for a kid. So is the Chronicles of Narnia. Schindler's list? Probably not. The Golden Compass I wouldn't give to a 5 year old - but to a tween (which I'm guessing the audience you were mentioning) it should be fine, which is what I was thinking about .

But, actually, the books do have many negative things in it, not necessarily against Christianity and its beliefs, but simply on society and behavior. I think that most kids (at least the ones I've encountered) are pretty intelligent. More intelligent than I usually give them credit for. Still, a lot may not get the references, simply enjoying the book for what it is - a high fantasy novel. And for those who do, so what? It may do them some good to hear a different point of view. I certainly don't think its going to do the average tween or teenager much more harm than what they see and hear in the news and in popular media nowadays anyway.
