An ascended master is a fictitious, idealized, immortalized human being. Although the idea of an enlightened brotherhood was not new, the 'ascended masters' really didn't appear on the metaphysical scene until the Ballards invented them in the early 1930s. Their ascended master Saint Germain was a composite character inspired by tales of mystic figures depicted in several metaphysical books. Just to be clear, the Biblical Jesus was also a fabricated person. Google search the 'Christ Myth'.
