Bowie sounds sleazier and therefore more convincing than this or the Brel version. Bowie sounds like he's been there where the other 'artists' would shit their pants if they had met any of the real sailors!!
@tanpiltanpil : Bowie's version is atrocious, it just kills a magnificent song. Scott is the only one who could slightly understand what Brel was singing about.
Of all the English language version, this one's the best!
I like the back-up music for Walker's version, as compared to Brel's. But then again, Brel's voice itself is the essence for the original song and music will only be subordinate to his powerful voice.
Thanks for posting this, it's a great song, although personally I prefer the Brel original. But I think what Scott Walker has done is introduced a whole new (English speaking) audience to Brel's work.
Yes, when you listen to the Brel's original, it's so great that you could share your emotions. But what happens after the Scott's version? Wondering where he's gone, you'll find you're so alone there, don't we?
The Mort Schuman translations are generally regarded as the most sensitive interpretations of Brel's work, and along with Scott's vocals and stunning musical arrangements, it's a great formula. Interesting that on the "30th Century Man" film, the guy who engineered all of Scott's Philips recordings commented that he couldn't have achieved a better sound today even with modern recording techniques.
Scott's interpretation's the next best to the one and only Jacques Brel's ! It's all there, the voice, interpretation, the diction, the raucous, smoky, dirty atmosphere... and I can tell. I'm Flemish.... ;)

He always had a nice voice but it is STILL not a patch on M. Brel.

THE BEST VERSION OF THIS SONG EVER !!! well that's my opinion.
beechy111111 1 year ago
Excellent version, has a better sound than Brel's one. I feel the same with this song that with Brel's one, whereas French is my native language.

I would say that's quite a compliment, coming from Brel's homeland! ;)

I definetly second that, and i'm Flemish too. Bowie's version is not bad but it isn't as expressive as Walker's.
