The idea of christian metal is kind of strange seeing as metal has almost always been about "shock: and "sex and drugs" even "satan", i mean...they throw up devil horns in every metal concert, that explains it all.
@LarendriaThePagan Those devil horns aren't meant to be devil horns. Dio has explained where this came from since he was the man who pretty much made it a trademark for Metal. His Italian grandmother used it to ward off the evil eye (which is known as malocchio) and then he just used it to have a symbol. The "metal = satanism" is total bullshit and largely outdated.
@Deghinsea132 He claims to have trademarked the devil horns, but is there any evidence to that? His grandmother used it as a " the devil is going to get you" thing, so what, as if it didn't exist before then? Give me a break.
@LarendriaThePagan It did exist before him, he never claimed he was the first, he was merely the one to popularize it and make it more of a Metal symbol than it was before.
@LarendriaThePagan Him using it everywhere at all times ever since 1979. He himself stated he was not the first but just one who used it a lot which eventually turned out to become a popular sign.
@LarendriaThePagan Because ever since he was excessively using those horns, many other people started using it aswell. Yes, he's dead, and? What does that have to do with anything?
I have a challenge for everyone reading this. If you know anyway to publicize these bands, do it. It is as simple as that. Power Metal, despite being awesome, is dying. We're the ones who still love it, so let's spread it. You can find every single album for Christian ROCK bands on iTunes. Little to nothing of Christian power metal. SPREAD GOD'S WORD, AND SPREAD IT THROUGH METAL! JESUS FREAKS UNITE!!
@rawk4God777 Power Metal isn't dying, on the contrary, Power Metal bands are pouring out of every existing which boasts metal bands as a whole. The US, Germany, Finland, Spain, Brazil, the UK, Sweden, Japan, ... all these countries still have many active Power Metal bands so don't go spouting out random bullshit to advertise your own shit, that's disgusting.
@Theshemproductions Are you being serious? I would wager all kinds of music probably started with "pagans". Did you know John Wesley took a lot of bar drinking songs and changed out the lyrics to Christian lyrics? "Amazing Grace" being one of them...music is an invention of God, not man. We can please him with our motives, our lyrics, our hearts - no form of music is inherantly evil.
i think the problem with most people is people cant walk that line between reality and fantasy, im not saying there is no such thing as satanic bands, but especially in the genre of power metal everything they sing about is fantasy a great example of this is Rhapsody of Fire their album Reign of a Thousand Flames is entierly about demons totaly raeping the world after the dark lord gets hold of the emerald sword, but just because they sing about demons dosnt make them a satanic band
My friend... I think you have mistaken some things. For example, I know Thy Majestie and never seen them as a christian band. That song (In God We Trust) is a Stryper cover, just that.
As much as I love some of these bands, I do have to say that I find it rather silly that people list them as Christian bands. As if them being Christian would make any difference what so ever. Theists tend to be so obsessed about their religion that they'd even eat turds if it only was stamped with their religion.
So basically, those people would listen to any kind of metal or other genres for that matter, as long as it's about Christianity or something in that area?
But how can you "create" an entire other subgenre just because of the lyrics? Otherwise we would also have fantasy metal, fairy metal, racist metal, nazi metal and so on.
No, I think this kind of labeling is fine because it clearly mentions power metal with christianity as the main theme but I think it's a bit unnecessary to start labelling bands for their lyrical contents. There are many (perhaps even too many) subgenres in metal so we don't need another branch. But you are one of the few who actually calls the bands listed just power metal with christianity as a theme, which I have no objection with.
@Nergal131 SERIOUSLY DISAGREE. Christian music is the ONLY genre in which the message is first, music second. The lyrics/message is what differentiates Christian worship music from the secular.
That takes away every single part of what music stands for. Then it's just another way for religious people to try and preach their cause while the music is just there to support those claims, which is utter and complete bullshit. Make music for the music, not for the message it spreads.
And that's just plain ol' bullshit. Music should be about the music first and the message later. Let the people choose what to believe him, don't brainwash them from birth. If it would be first about the music and then about the message, I wouldn't have problems with any lyrical contents but making music purely and solely to spread the word of God is retarded imo.
@Nergal131 The beauty of music is, if you don't like it...it's message or what it stands for, then you always have the option to listen to something else. I tend to like Christian metal and it's message it's a nice change from a lot of negative stuff floating around out there. You, however, obviously don't care for it, so my suggestion is, listen to something you DO like, and leave off with the negativity.
That's just the thing, John said Christian music is about the message first, which is wrong times 100 imo. Music shouldn't be about the message first and the music last. I like these songs for what they are, not for what message they spread, even if I don't agree with your, John's or these artists' views about religion and whatnot.
As a Christian i would have to totally agree, even Christian music should not be about the message, because it is not the MUSIC that makes people christian it is the message itself. So if I tell you it and you reject it you would reject just as well as you would the music that proposes the message.
listen to music and enjoy it, dont worry about the message...
unless it offends you then do whatever you want i guess
in conclusion music is music and sermons are sermons
"So if I tell you it and you reject it you would reject just as well as you would the music that proposes the message." I don't quite get what you are trying to explain with this part. But it's not like I dislike the music when I don't like the lyrics or don't agree with the lyrics, because I wouldn't have to listen to Death Metal or Black Metal or something like that. So I honestly don't really care about the lyrics but I just don't like the "message first, music second" thing.
@zmanjohn00 I worry about messages, like you. Still, I have yet to find a Christian band who can make songs as beautiful as those by Within Temptation (especially Our Farewell).
@Hordeofantestor for a Christian.... do you have any idea how hypocrital you sounded when you sead " listen to music and enjoy it, dont worry about the message..."? Just wondering.... because Jesus didnt go to the cross telling everyone to "just forget about the message that I have come to send and die for"
Well, fantasy metal actually does exist. It refers more to the lyrics than the music, like you mentioned, but it basically refers to bands like Dio, Warlock, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and others who often dealt with fantastical, mythological, or similar subject matter and were heavily influential to the power metal genre. Musically, true power metal takes more after NWOBHM, thrash, and other such genres, but lyrically it is fantasy metal on steroids. It is not really worth mentioning, though.
I don't believe in those sorts of labelling, otherwise bands would be labelled just for their lyrical content instead of the music, which makes up for more than 100 or more possibilities. Fantasy based Power Metal is still Power Metal, just like NSBM still is Black Metal or any other example of it. The lyrics shouldn't define a band's genre, seeing as how every single subject could be made into a genre if it were the case.
I see your point. To be honest, I do not usually like getting involved in the labelling too much, but I just figure if people are going to argue about it they might as well get their facts straight. I do feel as if I have learned something here. Thank you for proving your point in such an articulate, dignified, and intelligent way; it is truly hard to find good conversation on this website.
Christian friends i have call their black metal what metal their death metal birth metal and their black metal white metal. They say that its what each of the genres represent that they dislike. I agree with you but i do understand the other side as well.
Besides, "true" Power Metal just evolved and some bands have adopted a more keyboard-oriented, higher but less powerfull, overall happier sound but they still remain Power Metal. Helloween's Keepers weren't exactly the most aggressive, powerfull and ball-smashing type of Power Metal either but they still remain one of the founders.
Also, European Power Metal as we call it defines the "Power" in Power Metal, not by how powerfull the vocalist is or something like that, but the whole package to give you an epic or powerfull feeling and make you thrilled to ride into battle. Bands like Pharaoh, Ballistic and Jag Panzer make me want to kick people in the head but bands like Rhapsody or others make me wanna pick up a sword and go to battle (example) so it's just a different sort of feeling "powerful".
Interesting... I'm not sure if our loving Father should be associated with such barbaric music...
