One thing I really appreciate about Charles is his HONESTY. So many players back then and especially today give these canned speech answers that do not show unique or honest opinions. Most sports players have been so popular their whole lives that their personalities have suffered as a result...just like good looking people...their personalities a lot of times end up being pitifully boring. Not Charles....thank god.
@QTymatic Tim Duncan, Pau Gasol, Amare Stoudemire, Dennis Rodman, Kevin Garnett, Karl Malone, Bob Pettit, Kevin McHale, Elvin Hayes, Dirk Nowitzki, Dolph Schayes, Chris Webber, Buck Williams, Bob McAdoo, Charles Oakley, Michael Cage, Dave DeBusschere, Jerry Lucas, Larry Nance, Horace Grant, Connie Hawkins, George McGinnis, Clifford Robinson, Rasheed Wallace, Chris Webber, Shawn Kemp, Mehmet Okur
Karl Malone was better and so was Duncan. others are close but i dont think better such as Dirk, Garnett. I would put Barkley #3 which is among the greats!
@Defender80s True, that was Barkley's award. Unfortunately that spitting incident happened. One of the greatest players ever though, just a freak of nature. 6ft4, 6ft5, whatever, dominating every guy inside. That's what you get when you know how to position and box out, something that is oblivious to 90% of today's inside players. Thank god for Kevin Love.
@75samuel75 The spitting incident occurred on March 26, 1991, whereas Barkley constituted the MVP runner-up in 1990. Magic Johnson received the award that year because he was the best player on the team that posted the league's best record, the same criteria that would cause Barkley to receive the MVP in 1993 even though Hakeem Olajuwon arguably offered a superior case.
@nkfriedrich Sure, maybe you don't like him. There's not a single PF that i'd pick before Charles if I was starting a team. Most skilled PF of all time, undersized and just making people look like fools.
Fuck the Lakers! They had everybody to win Nixon, Coop, Scott, James, McAdoo (as 6thman), Kareem (The Best Player till 1985) and ofcourse the marketeable Magic. Riley did not win shit with the Knicks because it was Ewing as the only Offensive Force. The idiot can only design great offense when he has the weopons if he doesn´t he lacks
@AceroySangre Wow, U sir are an idiot.Bitter much? Riley went to the Knicks, totally changed his coaching style and won with players nobody wanted. Then he went to Miami and won there, with Tim Hardaway who nobody wanted anymore and who was "washed up". It's easy to win titles like Phil Jackson does, he's had the most dominant players in the NBA for 15yrs or so. It is incredibly hard to coach totally different types of teams and do it well. Riley is an incredible coach, show some respect.
@75samuel75 Although I agree with your overall take, Riley almost always featured an All-Star center (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning, Shaquille O'Neal), which is a great place to start.
Why is it that so many people on the internet have a kick for capitalizing every first letter in a word? On a relevant note, Charles did not have pathetic teammates...
Wow thank you very much! I don't remember this opener for the prudential halftime report (I thought they used the same as the 1992 version) and I didn't remember Pat Riley doing things by himself either. He really didn't handle it well without Bob Costas!
And look at the last thing Pat says! It looks like he's estimating what the score is LMFAO he kind of rolls his eyes back and it looks like he just guesses what it is. I think he was just reading the scoreboard though. Either way Riles wasn't really cut out for television, coaching is his thing
You know how many times black ball players got spat upon and called names by crazy white fans? So he spat on a white girl and spat on some white fans, big freakin' deal. It's not enough Barkley is married to a white woman having wild orgies on road trips with white women but he has to spit on a little white girl. Big freakin' deal Pat! Hey Pat, why don't you stop kissing licking NBC B-hind and start spitting out the taste. It took Riley 15 years to win another title and the refs fixed it. Spit!
NBA players are held at a higher level. They are PROFESSIONAL basketball players, and are expected to act professionally. They had to make a big deal about it or the NBA would have lost a lot of rep for letting a player spitting at a person in the crowd get away like it was no big deal. It was not right for the man in the crowd to be yelling racial slurs, but unfortunately for Charles that part of the story was less popular and he should have kept his cool.
He didn't spit into the crowd. That isn't an excuse. He spat but he didn't spit into the crowd. All he did was spit and I love spit, we all love spit. The spitting incident was funny. Barkley didn't take crap back in 1989-1991; he got soft when he got to Phoenix. But Riley was right in asking the question about a guy paying money for that abuse. But Charles was right, fans do pay to abuse players and most guys back then didn't put up with it. God Bless Ron Artest.
God bless Ron Artest had he hit the right guy :P That must suck to be sitting there enjoying urself then suddenly having some 250 pound man barreling up towards you with the look of "ima fuck you up bitch!"
Wow i always heard about Chuck's spitting incident but never saw the video until now. Thanks for uploading this. And yeah Riley seemed very angry at Charles in the interview you can tell.
True many people did not like Charles, including Stern who stole his MVP in 1990 and all the 6`9-6`10-6`11 and 7`0 ft pussies that where humilated by the 6`4er on a daily case :)
