@originaldriver - you obviously haven't seen G1 recently if thats what you are referring to. It's has issues out the wazoo, but it notable and memorable for the fact that it started everything and Hasbro has made a rich history from it. The issues are typical for toons at the time though. It's dorky, corney and has story, animation and character issues, etc, but that makes it fun. I love G1, but I can't say it's the best TF series made either.

@erailea It doesnt even look as if they really tried. The lack-luster, mediocrity of the animation and lazy art design just doesn't work for the franchise.

Im starting to feel dorkier by the minute just talking about it, but try taking a look at some the of the older TF shows. They could be pretty goofy at times, but at least portreyed a saga and built on the history of the overall franchise. The major events and twist of the series added a feeling of anticipation.

This... just sucks.

@originaldriver - actually there's a lot of thought behind the design. If you check out the art book they talk about it. What you might be seeing is the simpler-than-normal design, but that doesn't mean they were lazy. And having studied animation I don't see anything particularly wrong. It's an exaggerated anime style, albeit some parts are bad, but every cartoon has that.

And I have seen several of the old ones. Haha. I grew up on Beast Wars :) And I've re-watched G1 in the last year or so.

@erailea They use a simplified art style to reduce production effort. Not for cosmetic effect. A lot of anime productions frequenly use simplified designs because it allows animators to produce more cells in short span of time. It also helps in scenes requiring more frames of animation where smooth action choreography is emphasized over character detail

In the case of G1, it looks more like they rushed a deadline to keep up with movie merchandising.

@originaldriver - haha. Well I can't argue that. The artist who created most of the character designs had just come off of Teen Titan's however, so I think the designs were probably also made because its what he was frequently using. That said however I'm sure the designs had to pass by Hasbro since i know they denied the creators the ability to use Hot Rod in Sentinel Prime's place. So Hasbro might have been looking for a new overall concept and look for TFA.
