best 8-bit version hands down. Scrolling was annoying though. Especially as i can clearly remember playing cassette games on msx with much smoother scrolling.
Pretty weak, especially for an in-house production but if this is the best an MSX-1 can do, fair enough. Surprised to learn it didn't even have a proper hardware scroll feature though...
Very nice graphics on an 8bit system. Even the sound is pretty good for an 8 bit system. Too bad hardware scrolling was not part of the specs for MSX machines. Otherwise, they were pretty good for the day. Well balanced and conceived 8 bit architecture.
The game is very impressive for an MSX 1 game. There's a consense between MSX users that Irem should had done this MSX 2 only... then it would be amazing.
But it's really impressive considering this runs in an MSX 1 !!
I think that's the only home version of R-Type made by Irem itself.
Cool game!

You get used to it after a while.

More than 2 colours on screen and no colour clash? WTF?!

That's a fair conversion for an MSX.

Check out Gradius 2 or Salamander, they look a lot better than this halfhearted port. But yeah the MSX wasn't made for hardware scrolling.

i tried playing this once but it hurt my eye. why is the scrolling so ghey?
melvoin 3 years ago
Because of limitations of MSX. The scrolling is done by character remapping, so the field scrolls one character block at a time.

And that's why the MSX is a flaming pile of shit. Look at the Commodore 64, which was released one year ago and didn't have this problem.

One of the weakest comments I've ever read here.

Amazing for an MSX 1, right up there with Konamis titles like Nemesis and Salamander

very bad conversion imo :D
OpticalHaze 4 years ago
Still, Irem at least did this themselves.
Game doesn't hold a candle to Salamander and Nemesis 2 on MSX though...

I love the Gradius style scrolling... Zit-zit-zit-zit... Ifeel like plugging my super-computer in again for some game :D

I was gonna say it looked a bit poor for an MSX conversion...

Looks suprisingly goodfor an MSX conversion. Makes me wonder why Irem never released this for the NES/Famicom.
