  • The overclocked versions make me itchy, is this normal?

  • I want full broken soundtracks ^.^

  • sounds like nine inch nails

  • My thoughts at 14mhz: "It sounds like satan's asshole!" followed by me laughing.

My thoughts at 16.7: "Wow, it's gone all minimalist with the music.. with crazy cyber echo.. and OMFG THE SCREEN"

  • What a horrid display! So, I guess that this sort of proves that you don't have to have a super powerful, high speed processor in order to run decent games normally.

Kind of makes all of the processor hype in the old gaming magazines look like a bunch of pointless garbage now.

  • Suicide Hedgehog.

  • 7 MHz = Sonic on speed

14 MHz = Sonic on weed.

16.7 MHz = Sonic on acid.

  • At the beginning of 16.7, drug are starting to kick in. Middle to the end it finally kicked hard. XD

  • 16.7 IS TALKING TO ALIENS or maybe the devil himself?

  • It seems that the PSG isnt affected by this?

  • Sonic at 16.7Mhz is at epileptic mode

  • the 16.7MHz video is so hypnotic, the music and sounds are so trippy

  • It seems even Sega themselves knew that Faster is not always better.

It's not called "blast" processing for a reason.

  • ouch.

  • thats a fine auto remix function

  • I love how the PSG track is still fine. Haha. z80

  • That music is fantastic.

  • It's like watching the world slowly start a nuclear meltdown.

  • Sonic is rendered at the 68000 processor. while the bgm and sound are on the z80.

  • Comment removed

  • O_O

  • Do you have an old computer? Sounds like someone's using Dial-Up.

  • I LOL'd so hard at the 16.7MHz speed! Absolutely beautiful!

  • 10 MHz it's the best overclock 'cause the games are playable with no bugs.

  • overclock gone wrong o_0

  • Green Drugs Zone

  • should be renamed to sonic the hedgehog on lsd

  • That only happens on Sonic 1 'coz the music adn the game are on the 68000, and other have the music on the Z80

  • Oh no! Dr.Robotonik has used the power of the emeralds to corrupt the world of Sonic! It's too late, Sonic!

  • GIYGAS THE HEDGEHOG

  • 7mHz: Dum Dum Dee Dum Dum

14mHz: Ugh! Oh! I can't take it... anymore!

    16.7mHz: Kiiiilllllll... mmmm....eeeeeee............

  • i have seen videos of overcloking at 10 mhz and 13.4 mhz, and the sound worked normaly in sonic 2, why is so bad at 14mhz in sonic 1? its the game or the overclok?

  • I love how the YM2162 and DAC completely spaz out but the PSG continues to work just fine. XD

  • @SonicTheJackrabbit How was he able to experiment with different MHz?

  • This was hilarious. 16.7 = So on drugs, the song even sounded like it was on an acid trip XD

  • lol if it turned into Mario bros at 4 MHz

  • Ear Rape Zone; Act 1

  • o.O Sonic, ya gotta lay off the LSD before a stage.

  • This is probably what Sonic would look like if I coded it.

  • "YouTube POOP: The Game (Featuring SONIC THE HEDGEHOG!)"

  • im sorry but this is fucking hillarious

  • fuckin' sux

  • what, LOL!

  • why would you wanna overclock the genesis neway?

  • for fun i guess :]

  • @ravenrage07

    Yeah, isn't blast processing enough?

  • CPU actually goes too fast for this system, VDP and sound co-processors are left one the same frequence as in 7mhz unit (IMHO). so try to overclock them too...

  • You need a Motorola 68000 for better overclocking. The Motorola can go up to 20mhz on paper, the only machines using a 68000 CPU that fast were the Macintosh Portable and Powerbook 100. Chances are 20 would not work in a genesis, but there should be no issue with 14 and below.

  • something is not right with this unit. I've seen 10 and 16 with no glitches on sonic, sonic 2 and sonic 3. the diff is that busy screens don't lag

  • the moral of the story is... Better leave your hardware the way it was created ;p

  • O.o the music on the highest Mhz should not be heard by children. its way too scary!

  • Too bad none of this actually happens. I overclock mine and it does nothing like this...

  • MY EYES!!!!1!!11!

  • haha fucking crazy!

  • 7 MHz - "Yeah, it's normal."

14 MHz- "Damn! I like this better than the actual non-fucked up thing!"

    16.7MHz- "..."

  • WHAT DID YOU SAY? I THINK THE SOUNDS MESSED UP MY HEARING!!! jk lol

  • 1:35 - 1:37

It's like the Genesis just sucked in someone's soul.

  • 1:35 - 1:37

Sounds like the system's throwing up or something.

  • poor genesis....

  • do we have nearly identical names or am I just hallucinating

  • Nearly identical.LOL!

  • 7 MHz = Normal Sonic.

14 MHz = Sonic on cheap drugs.

16.7MHz = Sonic on hard drugs.

  • 1:31 - 1:33, when you lose rings, it goes ding-ding!

  • admittedly very trippy, but is there any reason for doing it? or is it just a case of 'i did it because i can'? ^_^

  • OMG i thought when you hit 16.7 Mhz that i was fuckin trippin. lol. i was like WTF is goin on near the end there.

  • Oh, God, my ears!

  • Sounds like you got a fax coming through.

  • I think you did it wrong, you shouldn't have messed the sound up since its handled by a totally different processor, that or just 17.8 Mhz is way too fast for the way its coded.

  • Actually Sonic 1 has the sound driver on the main 68k processor, unlike Sonic 2 or Sonic 3.

  • 16,7 is really creepy with the red flashes and distorted Green Hill Zone music.

  • Man. Its like some sort of hypnotising program.

  • M68000 Official Max Frequency=10mhz

  • that's not true, the Neo Geo and Sega CD both had it at 12 mhz.

  • An Amiga OC board I had once ran one at 14.XX Mhz, they can make them faster...

  • I remember seeing on the screensavers someone brought in an over clocked genesis, i forget what the CPU frequency was but it was enough to clear up the framerate problems such as in sonic 2's multiplayer and to play echo the dolphin smoothly.

  • first overclock you lose your hearing, then the 2nd one you start having seizures

  • 17.8mhz is like the soviet union.

  • 20mhz is the max for 68000 cpu

  • I thought the game was going to be faster! XD

  • hahaha, it's the secret soundtrack. The last part sounds so evil, though

  • Nice noisecore

  • after watching this,

    my eyes were hurting badly

  • I think the CPU divided by zero and ended up like this.

  • Not even Robotnik could rule the world now, as Missingno took over "South Island".

  • OMG your comment just made me laugh!!!

  • I CAN SEE FOREVER

  • I'M SHITTING BRICKS AND PISSING OIL

  • SO I HEARD YOU LIEK MUDKIPZ

  • aconnor96...STOP WITH THE MEMES,YOU FUCKNUT!

  • I notice than although you are over clocking the 68000 the Z80 remains at the same speed (which controls the sounds), hence the Master System PSG sound (used in tandem with the Megadrive FM sound) is not corrupted.

  • its like the end of the world, thats pretty cool

  • Thanks for showing us why we should never attempt to overclock our Mega Drives/Genesises. =P

  • robivy64, are you sure you have the correct clock frequencies for the stock Megadrive? If you multiply the clock frequency by whole numbers (x2, x3, etc...) you should have more success.

  • That's gonna hurt my ears. Goes to show how overclocking a game system can have both benefits and setbacks. XD

  • Ear Bleeding...

  • Hm, I wonder what would happen to a Genesis if I'd install one of my Atari ST speeders in it. I have some simple ones ranging from 16mhz + cache to 68030 based 50MHz monsters.

  • 68030s wouldn't work, as they're not entirely code-compatible. A 68010 has been known to work, but one or two games go wrong, including Sonic 3.

  • why?

  • overheating causes processor to malfunction.

  • You overclocked it incorrectly. It should play fine at 14 megahertz, or 100 megahertz (possible with Megasis (a Sega Genesis emulator))

  • HAHA! that sounds well nutty that does :) the end level music sounds so dark and scary and messed up ^.^ xx

  • EAR RAPE

  • but...WHERE exactly cant a genesis handle too many sprites in Sonic. I have never noticed that.

  • Multiple places, trust me. My Genesis slows down like teh pfux in Marble Zone, especially when I lose an assload of rings...

  • That ring thing rings a bell actually. I remember an occasional slowdown, but since that kind of suits the scenario when you lose a hundred rings, I thought the game was designed that way. I guess not :)

  • Most MDs don't have that sort of problem at 14 Mhz and are flawless up to at *least* 12 MHz. My system only behaved like that past 25 MHz..

  • lol

  • My eyes hurd aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh

  • OMG RUN ITS GOING TO TEAR A RIP IN SPACE TIME

    lol pretty damn cool

  • argh! it hurts! it hurts so bad!

  • So what I got from this video and the comments, is that Sonic the Hedgehog is the only game that is as unstable as a problem child on crack at a higher cock rate. it's just a Megadrive, and that the sound on the Genesis sucks. That's no use to me except that Sonic 1 freaks out at higher clock speeds...Someone, tell me how to overclock the damned thing!

  • Don't you mean CLOCK rate?? lol

    :)

  • "higher cock rate"

I see what you did there. Sonic 1 + Overclock = gaem raep.

  • would there be anyway to overclock the CPU on a Genesis/Mega Drive emulator?

  • I noticed no difference...same old crappy sounding Genesis sound generator...lol cool vid!

  • whats the point? it just fucks up the megadrive...

  • It's just a megadrive, who cares? I can pick one of those up for 10p!

  • i was thinking the same, by all means do the jap/us/uk cart mod + the 50/60 hz one, but doing that one? oh dear.

  • if he found a way to proportionally overclock all the cpus in that unit then he would get everything in sync and all would sound good , example of this would be allowing more fps on an emulator than NTSC 60

  • LOL at the end it cant even add, becasue its so unstable.

  • You need liquid nitro n00bs, and lol

  • what u needed with this overclock?

  • AHHHHHH!! Seizure!!!

  • so what gets re-wired? ive only clocked using the bios on pc's im thinking you must need a few extra volts, but how would you increase the cpu clock?

  • I guess this is what happens when you "Blast Process"...

  • The third part of the video shows the genesis running with the aid of an oscillator which pushes the CPU beyond speeds normally atainable. In effect, it shows you what happens if you go too far with the overclock: the system becomes unstable and random glitches abound.

    There endeth the lesson.

  • The second part shows the genesis running stable at 14mhz which is an easy mod to do (doesn't require any extra hardware, just a bit of re-wiring).

The difference is notable: parts of the games which would cause slowdown were not causing slowdown with the CPU running at this speed (that's the idea with overclocking. It doesn't make games physically run faster).

  • This sucks! The game speed is the same! Wtf!

  • learn how overclocking works, decrapattack!

    THEN post.

  • Sorry, CPS2. I don't think it's necessary to learn how it works to see that there's no difference in the game except for it became crappy. And the player sux!!

The biggest difference i saw was on Sonic 2. But in Sonic 1, overclock works turning a cool and nostalgic game in a piece of junk!

  • Incorrect.

Overclocking works fine if it's done in moderation.

The first part of the video shows a genesis running normally at 7.6mhz (its normal clock rate).

  • Sorry, decapattack. I think it's necessary to learn how it works to see that there is a difference. The game isn't supposed to run faster, only play more smooth with more sprites onscreen. Sonic 1 only freaks out like that because, well, I dont know, but thats the only game that does it..

  • What are you doing to that poor little genisis

  • must be very unstable @ 16Mhz

  • why such crappy results after it was overclocked??

  • Sonic 1 is the only game that freaks out at higher speeds. It's pretty funny and in no way damaging to the Genesis.
