  • Holy shit

  • Wow...you even have some of Peart's mannerisms. He tends to give a little sideways head jerk on accented snare hits just like you! Uncanny! Well done - you even have that ride pattern down!

  • Not only are you really good those drums sound amazing

  • Not an easy song..you owned it...

  • dude!!!! nice work at 1:10

  • this guy is so so talented, i would have trouble even trying to set his kit up : ))

  • Nice work buddy, Rush on!

  • this guy deserves a professionally recording studio!!!!

  • and good work having an awesome bassist wife and a cool kit and a nice house too it seems! Im fat and wear glasses and love the drums and dont got none of those things lol

  • it's near the mark man, but the hats sound about 10% slow and not quite as differentiated as neil plays it. Snare is a bit blat sounding. 4/5 overall though.

  • Wow, this is you without much practice? Sheesh....that was AWESOME!!! And one of my favorite rush songs. GREAT COVER!!!

  • This is awesome. Are that 5 blocks the LP Granite blocks? They sound cool.

  • @Rushfan551 Yes, those are the LP blocks.

  • Do you intend to play "A red sector a" here too?

  • good man !! perfect job!!!!

  • I noticed you mentioned you only focus on songs that are in your band's set list. What is your bands name? What city are you in?

  • @DrummerDave77 Yes, although now the band is on hiatus due to medical problems (my back is one) and I'm not sure we will do it again. We'll see. I live in Tucson.

  • i am a drummer, although i dont play anymore i always get the itch. thanks for playing, you did a great job

  • A so great one song!! Dude, like papanots said: What a joy to watch you! Thanks!

  • What a joy to watch you play dude. Thanks for sharing!

  • @papanots And thanks for watching!

  • @Astrotama excellent Drummer...

    Where You From Men!!

    Do You Have Msn??

    Good Wishes

  • Damn.... I feel sorry for those drums. You beat the SHIT out of them, and WON ! Awesome !!

  • @ilovealaska Thanks! Well, power must be a part of playing Rush songs on the drums. Neil hits very, very hard (and amazingly, he hits hard even when playing real fast which is not always easy to do...). So, when I try to duplicate these songs, I'm trying to hit hard too although I do not reach his level of power.

  • Congratulations man! You are undoubtedly one of the best drummers I've ever seen playing the music of Rush. I'm the drummer and here in Brazil also greatly appreciate the work of Neil.

  • Astro, would you consider a top down camera and possibly a bass shot on same vid. I know that all your vids have no top down shots. But possibly time to consider

  • Man your amazing!!!

  • Great job

  • Great job man...

  • Great drumming!

  • OUTSTANDING!

  • I don't comment on many RUSH covers, but I have to say your "Aimee Mann" section with the percussion parts is SOLID! The rest is pretty darn good, too!!

  • How do you get in...literally?

  • hey dude what can i say you are one awesome drummer and so is the rush track rock on.

  • @anthonyburdge

Yes, yes and Yes! Great drumming to a hugely enjoyable song that I love!

  • Your subdivisions version was under my recommendations, due to having seen Jacob Moon's rooftop acoustic version (which is also fantastic!)

You are a terrific drummer - I posted this to my Facebook site. Thanks for reminding me just how great Rush is too!

  • he plays the song, keeps the beat, yet essentially 'solos' throughout too. it's amazing, and quite hard to explain how one can hold a song together that way! dude, you are SOOO fast, and it KILLS me how your muscle memory slams the perfectly without looking and how accurate you can be all over the place at once.

  • hey what´s up i got a question how do you tune up the toms batter loose or tight??

  • @rafcasbr Euh, what do you mean by "how"? With a drumkey... ;) For Rush, you need to tune the toms quite high; they must cut to the high-volume mid-frequencies so commen to Rush music.

  • @Astrotama thanks you tune the toms quite high. that was my question.

  • @Astrotama thanks you tune the toms quite high. that was my question.

  • You even do that "head cracking" when hitting the snare, like Neil does! :D Very, very good! Excellent! Keep rockin'!

  • Thanks for Posting! ....always a Pleasure to hear real Talent!...Outstanding!!

  • dude you rock on rush. do you have a life? lol Paul

  • @crowsbark Yes, playing drums! ;) I have a very full career in astrophysics so drumming is my life! ;)

  • Freaking Awesome man!!!! I've been a Rush fan for over 20 years and this is an incredible job you've done... BRAVO!!!!!

PS I've seen them live 3 times and I'll be damned if this isn't super close to Neil's live performance....

  • awesome cover man!

  • "Time Stand Still" so that all the Rush fans can listen and see for themselves how awesome you are....you've got serious talent. Seriously.....Wow. Going on to listen to more of your work.

  • Excellent job man! WOW!

  • Super

  • Neil's drum kit! You are fantastic

  • Not a note out of place

  • I love this song

  • dang dude, how much did that set cost you??? good cover, too!

  • man....i will come see you play...if your ever in edmonton alberta......let me know

  • I have just watched the god of Rush drum covers. All other drummers doing Rush covers must now bow down to Astrotama....that is the eleventh commandent and don't deny it.

  • this guy, knows his fuckin drumming. best cover of Time Stand Still, period

  • i wish i could do that!!! good job dude!!

  • a virtual musical orgasm ... seriously ... how many have you NOT covered ?

    From Canada, with love.

    RUSH - Canada's Greatest Export

  • a little mistake @4:00 but almost a perfect drum cover, congrats!

  • respect.... you play it almost original!!!!!

  • as a musician myself.......that is my favorite song from the 80's....i love your videos and one day maybe.....neil peart will hang up his sticks and you'll join the band.

  • @shane37ca Not going to happen... Rush without Neil is not a possibility.

  • @Astrotama I have to agree with you

  • @Astrotama true there a team

  • hey your Rush tee shit and im saying in the most of the videos Thoose T Shirts ROCKS!

  • really nice job

  • nice job! play alot of rush myself and i have heard alot of people play this and many other rush songs and not quite nail it. neil is the best and its a great tribute that alot of drummers play his stuff. love the sound of your kit too. you did a great job.

  • You have amazed me with your talents, i used to play rush back in early 80's , stopped playing when i got married in 93, now divorced started playing again, your videos have greatly inspired me to practice a lot more . Thank you, keep on jamming!!

  • Very nice !!

  • really good job, nice set too.

  • Nice set. Great job on a tough song. Had this not been one of my favorites. I never would have noticed the discrepancies from the original.

  • good job man

  • Another big thumbs up!!! You are awesome.

How do you learn a new song? do you use sheet music or do you just learn by ear and by feel?

I am an intermediate level drummer. I do read music. What advise can you offer me to become half as good as you?? You rock!!!!!

  • @ktumbleweed Try to be as good as Neil! He's MUCH better than me! ;) I learn a song by listening to it 3-4 times a day. I start with the big picture first and then listen to the details, one by one. When I finally sit down to play, I usually have a pretty good idea what is going on, although lot of mechanics has to be rehearsed. I can read music too but I usually learn by ear. One advice: Practice a lot and learn the fundamentals. I never had drum lessons and I wish I was better at rudiments.

  • Dude you friggin' NAILED IT. Great job! Your kit sounds awesome, nice variety on your cymbals too.

  • Man, you ROCK !!

I loved the tone of your drums. Great tuning job.

    [ ]'s

  • @aurokam Thank you. I tried to tune the drums according to the song I play. It's easy for the Tama-Ludwig periods, tougher for the DW and Slingerland's.

  • probably the most accurate Neil tributes ive heard so far on youtube. Great job!

  • Great Job! Everything sounds awesome.

  • phenominal!!!

  • Hey Astro! Do you think you'll ever tackle Vital Signs? That is one of my favorite from Rush and NO ONE covers Neil like you bro.

  • Well, it's always possible. This is a song I know and practice quite a bit. But we are not playing it yet with my band and at the moment I'm concentrating on songs in our setlist. Stay tuned, it could happen though...

  • 'm a fan of rush, better cover that time stand still came ...

    awsome ..

    5*

  • Dude you are the man! Nice vid

  • AWSOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fuckin awsome!!!

  • Neil Peart's drum parts do not even look easy. But this guy really nails it with energy and skill!

  • cool

  • Mr. Martin, you are a wonderful drummer. I have watched all of your video's, they never get old. Love rush

  • dude, that's the best cover on here..

    wish I was that good!

  • damn dude, I'm impressed.

  • i like this song .... work in progress ¡¡¡¡

  • dude you're awesome thanks for posting

  • Take it from a fellow drummer and big time Rush fan. You Rock. I actually enjoyed that. I don't say that often. Check out my video response I made of my kids and family. I used Time Stand Still as the soundtrack. What a great song. What a great band!

  • Thank you!

  • I love this song, the words are so evocative. great playing dude.

  • nailed it. Excellent.

  • very excellent the best vid i have seen on youtube!!!! if u wouldnt mind telling me how do u get ur music in ur video?? i put this on my psp and ipod!

  • Look up....See that...it's the "Bar" and it's been set very high! favorited...

hey Astro, Can you do Distant Early Warning next?

  • Great to see you back in action and all moved...Love that song, in fact "Hold Your Fire" is one of my most favorite Albums.I remember buying that LP the day it came out in the record store, the salesman had to open the box because they didnt even have it on the shelf yet.Think that was Sep 9,1987 my Dads birthday..

  • great song! you pretty much nailed it,good work and keep it up!

  • 4 thumbs up, dude. (had to borrow my wife's thumbs for that one)

  • wonderful!

    Great!

    Fantastic!

    I love it!

  • I loved it. Great sound and video quality. Another outstanding effort.

    Congrats

  • Awesome job once again Astrotama, I love the Hold Your Fire album as its the first one that really got me into rush. Im a synth player, so perhaps in the future i could upload some tracks minus the drums for you to add some magic too... ;)

Keep up the good work !

  • by far the most accurate version on the web!!! great job! 5 stars

  • Amazing as always. Every time I watch your videos I want to run out and get a drum kit. Love your stuff. How long have you been playing?

  • The middle section of this, Tom Sawyer's solo, and Freewill's solo are probably the 3 Rush songs I have the most trouble with and you nailed it! If you have any advide for Tom Sawyer it would be appreciated.

  • Astrotama or Pauliewanna?

    that would be a drum-off

  • Not going to happen, though! Paul is a good YT friend of mine and there is no competition between us at all. I learn a lot from watching his stuff. We are both drumming fans and are just having fun!

  • Spectacular, as always. :D

  • What sticks do you use?

  • Who kicks ass?........Astrotama, thats who.

I hope Neil sees your work, and invites you for a jam session.

  • I don't know if I read that right, but, did you say your wife is a BASSIST? As in a Bass Guitar player?

If so.. Then that's awesome! o_o"

  • Excellente job , pis le fait que t aille le kit complet de symbales tu es un des rares , mais t un vrai , lache pas ta passion Dude

  • nice one, bro!

  • god damn, i couldnt stop watching, your amazing man

  • Damm! I normally don't post but shit, you're just good! I've played drums for years, and Rush is my band. Having sold the set for kids and room, this is def inspiring me to rethink a larger house and get back into it. AWESOME job... The off rythms are harder to pull off than most people think, and you nail it...

  • fucking keep rocking dude. your fucking amazing.

  • Fuckin' A That was the SHIT! You're bad ass keep it up yo!

  • enjoy you vids very much, good job!!

  • Buena interpretacion Astro!

Hold your fire is for me one of the Rush more "contemporary" productions to date. Some hard-core Rush finds might not think this is a great album, but it has so many great tunes!- Hope you can put "Lock and key" on your to do list for the near future. Por cierto... I joined the kudos to former posts on the quality of audio and video.

    Saludos Doctor!

  • Great. Well done mate.

  • you nailed it as usual great to see you back online

  • Very good again. Besides the sound quality is a lot better in this video.

  • Nice job!

  • you're unreal!!! keep on rockin

  • Fantastic!!!!!

  • i have been watching ur rush vids for a long time....and honestly.... i never thought u were married....u look like a teen! no offence...awsome covers btw!

  • The wife needs a real amp, some sort of monitor system, and probably a lot more practice before a joint video gets made!!

    -The Wife

ps - you gotta make another video wearing the shirt Aunt Judy got you... lol...

  • very nice

  • Astro ive been watching your videos for over a year now, and new video you upload inspires me more and more to keep drumming. I enjoy everthing that you play. But that could be because i love rush, but who doesnt. keep up the good work and hopefully we can see you and your wife playing something one day.

    Have a good one

  • What sticks do you use?

  • Promark 747, Japan Oak, nylon tips.

  • wow. it's amazing that you get SOOOO into the song. which makes it all the better. you also need to get a combo of ur wife playin with you like you told tenplex. my favorite part is the chorus at 0:44, and all other spots. REALLY NICE COVER!!!

  • I don't know what is better, your performance or the fact that your wife encouraged you to listen to and play Rush. Most women don't like Rush. That's tops in my book.

  • Hehe. In fact, we met because of Rush. She is a major Rush fan too... ;) She plays multiple instruments, sings and is now becoming a great bassist. We play about 10 Rush songs now together. Some day, you will get a video of this combo... ;)

  • good vid man cant wait to see ur wife and u playing

  • Thats somthing special :). The love of music bringing two people together is a Beautiful thing.

  • That's awesome man!! I'd love to see that combo :D

  • Great as usual..

  • YEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS!!!! love this song thisused to be my fav song by rush but i cant learn this because im pretty sure i need a xylaphone (dont got one). amazing cover 5/5

  • Great job as usual..
