it was a justified protest to an unfair tax. the violence was unjustified. the police were there to uphold the law and were too going to be slugged with the tax they couldnt get through parliament hundreds of years before thatcher tried to. as a result, the working classes in the uk were spared this horrendous tax and chris patton (the arse whose job it was to get it through) got shipped out to hong kong.prob is, the labour govt has left the uk with huge debt again...

I do not agree with cruelty to animals, but there are limited ways for people to defend themselves against cavalry. Any blame for injuries suffered by animals should be shared by the police who use them against protesters.

I was there. I was 4 years old. My mum managed to get us out just in time before it really kicked off, though not before nearly getting run over by a riot van. The police were itching for a fight just as much as the anarchists supposedly were. One copper went to "subdue" my mum (read "kick crap out of") until he saw me, at which point he directed us out of harm's way.

The police didn't learn much from this event as the 1994 criminal justice bill demo and the 1997 Liverpool dockers demo also resulted in rioting in central London. As did the anti-capitalist and Mayday demos of the late 1990s and early 2000s. If the police had been less heavy handed at those events and instead used softly softly tactics like those used at many big football events they would have most likely passed off peacefully.
