NYC potter's field is called the City Cemetery. It is on an island called Hart's Island off the coast of City Island in The Bronx. I am a Funeral Director and on occasion we have to go out there to get someone that died previously unclaimed by family members and buried by the City of New York. It is a scheduled appointment coordinated with NYC Dept. of Corrections. There isnt much to see there, abandonded buildings from it's previous uses and that is about it. 1 Million are buried there
the corrections dept. handlers it now,my grandfather is buried there..they have a prison there now, they do all the landscape work, the prisoners.they have his name backwards on the paper work..
Very sad. Just think of how horrible it would be to die & be buried in a place where you have no proper headstone so nobody will ever remember who you were. So depressing. :(
Noone will remember you eventully anyhow. look at 100 year old grave stones.. do you know who they were? does anyone still vist them? thats not being remembered.
wow, this was interesting. There is a almshouse with a very similar burial ground near my house. Though the place doesn't have any markers, it is roped off. It's very sad to think of all the forgotten souls who are buried there. Great music choice!
