Most people who call artists sellouts are probably just jealous that these guys are being successful now. Or some of them are angry that now a great artist that was hard to find and difficult to share for them is now being talked about by teenagers and other inexperienced listeners, when they should be glad they are now being exposed to a broader audience.
That is, unless they actually changed their style to appeal to a mainstream audience. They they are sellouts.
when i think of selling out, i don't think of just making money, but more like abandoning your true self and doing what other people tell you just for more profit
I knows this is olds........ but I love it. I love your attitude. The arts suuuuuuuucks for making a living. The term "selling out" is for indie kids who love their soy and whatever everyone hates. I agree 100% on this. As a professional musician, i totally feel you. I mean, if you're getting paid to do what you love...isn't that kind've everyone's goal? The term "selling out" is kind've ridiculous to me.

Julia! I heard you talk about selling out in another video, too. Selling out is when you change into someone you're not to get the money. I see that you are still very much you, so tell all the jealous people to just get off your back! Keep doing what you do, please!!
So I find myself oddly invested in the goings on of your life because of these videos but now there are no more videos...it's like...sad...and stuff :( miss ya jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa (you got extra 'a's for being extra awesome...or should I say aaaaaaaaaaaaawesome :P

Best response to "selling out" I have heard! Why shouldn't you be able to make money doing what you love? Sometimes life requires compromises, as long as you stick to your morals, I say do it! :)
I dont think it is selling out. Dont people out there usually tell you to go out there and do what you love? and if you love something and you can get paid for it why not go for it?
omg what an ignorant, and u r from brasil, which is worse, they may not have mustaches, but god u look at their faces and u have a heart attack, gross, really u should google some better looking girls, but hey not judging, everybody has their own taste, puke.....
HP got roasted. I'm glad you have the views you do on "selling out," it will allow you to do great things with your music without ever having to worry about money or reputation. Outrageously awesome is an understatement, keep inspiring.
I couldn't really follow what was going on, I guess you have followers who know you, but as someone who came across you randomly, this is definitely boring and not my thing. Sorry! : )
In HS I had a chat with a friend about a favorite choir teacher. She said she thought he was fake, and i was troubled about it, so I went home and whined to my mom about it, like a mature teen. Her instant response: "That's a hard accusation to beat"
I do know fake people, and you probably know artists who have sold out, but...they're hard accusations to beat, so you might as well not worry too much about them :)
Anyway, if HP offered me $1000, I'd happily post an ad for them on my youube
Take it from someone who's father suffered from the starving artist syndrome - who was totally pure and unflinching in his battle against "evil corporate America" to the end: "sell out" if they give you've the chance kid, early, often and without shame. Finding ways to be compensated for your talent and creativity is a noble art unto itself.
Please don't listen to anyone talking smack about selling out. Of course, you always should try to stay grounded, but not at the cost of doing what you want. I used to have some talent myself but I chickened out when it came to committing to the music and the lifestyle. I've regretted it ever since - all the experiences missed, and who knows what direction the music could have taken (sigh). Always do what's in your heart. And remember there will always be people trying to put fear into you.
Some fans can be very fickle. I remember going to see the NY Yankees in the 70s. Reggie Jackson would be cheered as a hero for hitting a home run and later cursed out and booed for striking out.
The only advise I can give you is the advice given to Laertes by Polonius in Hamlet; This above all: to thine own self be true.
I think the fact that you're sort of worrying if people think you're selling out, adressing it and replying to people's comments should make it fairly obvious the people that say you're selling out are full of poopy.. (this sentence made so much more sense in dutch)
As long as you love what you're doing, which you clearly are, you shouldn't let people's negative vibes get to you..
com-on take the money! that's what is about quit making excuses and who cares what other people think....you'll have to learn you can't please everyone but please yourself first and the others will follow no matter what!
I wouldn't worry about "selling out" if I were you. Some people really expect you to keep doing what you're doing without getting money to live off? Really? Stupids.
I think people have their little "back pocket" artists that they like to have for some reason and they don't like it when the artist gets a bit too big for the pocket.
YOU'RE A SELL OUT!...no i jest i actually think you're awesome and i now play a ukulele (very poorly so far) because of you. And speaking as someone who can't get a job and will do pretty much anything any time anyone waves money in my face i say GOOD FOR YOU JULIA NUNES. Now all i need is people to pay me to watch you tube and play xbox. Also come bak to London cause i missed you last time..
i really love that you do what you wanna do, the way you wanna do it without being... offensive with it? (i know that's odd wording, but hopefully you understand 'cause i can't work out how else to say it). i think more people need to be like this... there are not many people who i consider to be good rolemodels; you are one of the few.
i can explain this better now and what i mean is you stay true to yourself, you are not doing things your way just 'cause you can, but because it's genuinely what you want to do. i wish you all the best in continuing to do this.
also, the last sentence is hilarious, but if the people at HP see this, i don't think they will agree that it's funny, hahah.
I'm still puzzled at the bizarre concept that being paid for doing what you want to do is a bad thing. Isn't that what everyone in the world wants? *facepalm*
Everyone in the world wants to get paid to do something they love. If you enjoyed making a video and you got paid for it, good for you!
The whole "selling out" argument doesn't make any sense at all anyway. Most of the people making that argument are only doing so because they're jealous or pretentious. I think the only time it's actually valid is if you sold out to get where you are instead of getting there by your own merit... which is not the case with you.
Don't panic so much., You're bowing to the cynics. As long as you are happy, isn't that what counts? Sure, you want to please peopl along the way too, but you can't please everyone all the time! Just go with what's happening and enjoy the ride!
"you are selling out" generally means "I have not been successful and I am angry that you are finding the success that eludes me, because now I can't relate to you as another unsuccessful person."
Sorry, my left pinky wasn't strong enough to fully press the A key.
Furthermore, I just wanted to say, I think HP is poop. Ever since they merged with Compaq in 2002, their standards for quality went down the drain. Personally, I think Fisher-Price produces a better laptop.
When I think of musicians who've "sold out" I think of artists like Gwen Stefani, Jewel, and even Nelly Furtado, who did a complete 180 turn in their music because probably their managers told them they'd make more money , be more popular., etc. If their hearts are still in it, then whatever, I'm not one to judge ... but it just seems weird when an artist goes from folk music to like gangster rap techno music in a year.
I always thought that it was fun to explore the concept of selling out through song. In fact, instead of talking about selling out, if you wanted you could instead just do a cover of Reel Big Fish's "Sell Out." (I assume you wouldn't do a cover of Tool's "Hooker WIth a Penis," though that would also be appropriate)
but, i define sellouts as musicians who sign with major record labels and stop writing the music that's true to themselves, and write music that's not really who they are, but sells more.
so i do not think you're a sellout. and i hope that never happens. keep being awesome
I agree with you... people think it's selling out if you get money for doing something that wasn't very hard.
Flipping burgers is a lot of work so we "deserve" the money if we make it that way..... editing a video is significantly less work, but it's the same concept. With the HP thing - it's like being offered a job. (I was picked to do it too.)
selling out is such a retarded term i mean money doesn't have anything to do with it. she wasn't getting paid before to do videos and she is now and they're still all good so it doesn't matter
Julia has been doing what she loves to do for a while. Now someone has given her an opportunity to do what she likes to do for money...how is that a bad thing? The whole selling out thing is something people use to make others feel bad about their achievements. It's overused and a little ridiculous. If a band is playing dive bars for years and some record label gives them the opportunity to make a bunch of money and get their music out to thousands...again...how is that a bad thing?
Julia, honestly, I don't think you should worry about trying to prove to people you aren't a sellout. The only way to prove it is to keep doing what you are doing and don't second guess yourself.
As for the HP project, it sounds to me like it's your first step into the world of being an advertising professional. How you described the lead-up is pretty much how the pros work and there's the paycheck at the end. Had that hit you, yet?
Ms Nunes, it's quite simple really - if you like the product and would recommend it to anyone you met, you're not selling out. However, if you don't like the product and/or wouldn't recommend it, but you're still advertising it anyway, that would be classed as selling out.
Please don't sell a product you don't like just for the money - I might have to stop loving you if you do lol.
By the way, this is the first randomly weird comment I've made towards you so I hope you don't ignore me lol
You must operate a strike out system for weird comments at least.....that's my first one ever, you wouldn't completely strike out a cute, innocent (ahem), english boy would you Jaaaaaa - exactly, no you wouldn't, which is why I love you.........oh dear god no don't put me on the ignore li........ahhhhh I'm on there aren't I?! lol
i agree with you, to a certain extent, but i dont endorse HP, but they gave me an interesting assignment: cant use your face or your music...90% of what my videos are!
hahah so i was intrigued, it would be very different for me, but i got a cool idea, and wanted to do it
like i said, even though i'm not an HP girl, i would've joined the contest just cause i like the concept. hahaha but they messed up and asked me early and now i'm getting paid for it. WOOPS
The fact you would be happy do it anyway for free means you didn't sell out. I'd also say that having seen your HP vid, it still had a very Jaaaaaa-esque feel to it, even though it wasn't your typical kind of vid as you said.
Ultimately though, most people criticising you aren't mature/old enough to be entitled to an opinion - afterall, until they've got experience of the real world how can they give qualified opinions on real world situations?!
I also think think that anyone who is a true fan of yours wants you to make some money. You've provided your true fans with free entertainment for years now, bearing your inner-most soul at times (The Conversation cover is a perfect example) and it's time you had the success you truly deserve.
Anyone who doesn't wish you the greatest of success and all the rewards that accompany that, on the basis they might not get free entertainment, is a truly selfish person who's not worth your time.
"Selling Out" Is a funny idea. What would all these clowns do for money? People have some twisted ideology of some underground grassroots music scene that's "all about making music" and not money. If you can GET PAID...doing WHAT YOU LOVE. Then by all means, get paid doing it...even if you have to hold a Pepsi can or market your own cologne. Gimme a fuckin' break you sissies.
I find it hilarious that previous videos have been riddled with these aforementioned "you're selling out" comments and yet when you make a video directly addressing the issue that they seem to find most pressing....these naysayers are nowhere to be found. All of the comments are positive "I don't think you're selling out!" comments. I wish just ONE person would be like "ok, I was one of those people who said you were a sell-out and I see that I was wrong." too much to ask?
i've been addressing some rather polite implications that i've changed or sold out
but the truth is, there's no way to prove it to you guys
i can sleep at night knowing that i'm doing what i love and i've made no compromises for anyone. that includes corporate ass holes and random haters on the internet
i'm not gonna change my hair for a record executive, or AsZHO733 (made up username).
although i will conceed that if my friends bet me, i'd dye my hair blue, but it'd have to be at least $50
You gotta do what needs doing. nothing wrong with that, fuck all the haters. 'selling out' is a very subjective concept, whenever anyone, famous or otherwise, catches a break and what was previously something fun to do on the side becomes a job/career then people cry 'sell out' its incredibly lame. when LeBron got drafted did he get labeled a sellout because he started making bills, instead of playing ball on the local blacktop.. Hell no.. so fuck 'em
The people who want to call you a sellout are the people who insist on putting labels on everything. Think of the people back at school who swear everyone who is happy/popular is some sort of "poser." These people are so busy judging others they can't even begin to define themselves. They attack what they don't understand...someone who can be happy, be an individual and also be rewarded with a monetary gain.
Eight times out of ten when someone says, "she's a sell-out! She sold out!" what they really mean to say is, "I'm jealous that she's getting paid more than me!" It's one of those terms that loses its meaning by virtue of the next generation being exposed to it before they're really old enough to comprehend it, like when my brother was little and he thought 'cutting someone off' just meant getting in front of them.
People grow, people change, people get paid, that's life. And I'm out of charac
"It's one of those terms that loses its meaning by virtue of the next generation being exposed to it before they're really old enough to comprehend it"
honestly, it's your life Julia, do what you want and what you need to do to be happy. when you only had a thousand subscribers people were like, "Julia, you're going to be so big and blah blah" and now that you've reached this point where you have so many fans and are playing so many shows people are mad because you've gotten this far? I don't get it, but all I know is that you have to do what's best for you. I dunno if any of this makes sense...I'm not the greatest at expressing things.
theres just no way any other path to success would've allowed me to meet the "true fans" the original supporter, you know?
like it's weird to me that people think the personal aspect has decline... like, HI, i'm right here
whats more personal than that
wanna meet me in person? come to a show, cause i now have the means to play more of them and i stay after an say hi to everybody. hahaha its just frustrating
I know what you mean, I think it's cool that you're trying to reach out to your fans, I have been around a while, before Into the Sunshine and all that(my darn "e" key keeps sticking. poo) and you have(atleast I think so) always made an effort to respond to my messages(and I send a lot) and answer any questions I had, I see you as a honest and real person. and honestly the fact that people get mad because of the fact that you have more fans is dumb, but I dunno. people are weird. -Amber
and besides I don't see you sitting here judging other people and telling us what we need to do with our lives. If you wanted to be like some musicians out there(who are in it for the money) you wouldn't take the time to make all these videos, to talk to us after shows...you would do everything strictly with the money in mind, but you're not like that. So people need to take a chill pill.
its great to see so many people making response videos about this. i totally agree with you. that first of all the concept of "selling out" is stupid and people shouldnt care. and second of all, you don't consider what you're doing "selling out" :D
Ok, show of hands, who now is thinking a video of Julia in a black wig playing "Bad" on her ukulele wearing a Michael Jackson jacket would be hilarious.
A bird does not sing so that others will applaud.....but if they do.....great!....if those others also drop a few Benjamins...great!.....keep on being who you are....and if people want to pay you for it.....great!...........P.S......watch my videos?
Go ahead, make TONS of money and play EVERYWHERE. I do not care, because I love your music. If you were to suddenly come out sounding like, say, Evanescence (ick!) I'd have to wonder what the deal was. I think it's fuckin FABULOUS that you got to play Bonnaroo, Ben Folds, etc. Do people expect you to play to crowds of 20 for the rest of your life? I get the idea that it would be ok if you did, but the bigger you get the closer you get to playing here in Detroit, so yay!
wow, it took me forever to respond to this. sorry about that.
anyway, i'm not trying to be hostile either. i don't know if i can really explain it, but i'll try. it seems like you do less of the random weird things in your videos and less updates and such, and i know that might be because you're busy, and i can completely understand that. i'm not trying to attack you or anything. i just kinda miss it, that's all.
but i don't want this to sound like a hate comment because i totally love you!
man, that comment makes me think that i accidentally brought down your life parade. i definitely know what it's like to ride the busy train and i'm not trying to attack you with any giant squids of anger, because you're seriously filled with the awesome. like for realz, you're the reason i started playing the ukulele about 8 months ago. i guess i was just sad-ish because i can't stop freakish busy-ness time from actually progressing, which is kind of a downer. oh well. much love to ya.
Historically, people want others to excel and grow... but only to a point. After that point, they start to despise the things they once supported on the rise. That is when the term "selling out" gets thrown around. The majority of the people misunderstand the term, but it really should mean when you compromise yourself artistically strictly for money, but even that definition isn't the best! There's nothing wrong with cashing a check doing what you like to do though.
selling out is just losing touch of your old roots/yourself through the process of becoming more and more popular. i don't think you will, you are too awesome. just because you go tour places and actually sell some albums, doesn't mean you're "selling out". you are still the same ol' kiddo i saw featured with "into the sunshine". i don't think i'll call you ol' kiddo anymore. but yeah, keep on rockin'.
hahaha i dont think i'll ever get to a point in my life where i dont fully understand where i came from and appreciate how lucky i am to be even this far
This is why I dont think Julia has or ever would ''sell out'' I Think the whole concept of her "selling out" is rather absurd and rediculous... its not like shes some mega celeb pushing pro active lol its clearly just some cash 4 an interesting project ... I Love your Music and Covers Julia!!!! More vids pleeease!!! P.S. My lil girl is 7 and LOVES your songs! You Rock in both our books & we hope you come to indiana again soon so we can catch a show!!!!!
Ah Julia, you COULD never, ever sell out just because your fans would probably love you no matter what. I agree about your whole opinion on the topic of "selling out" though, you make good points. Nerimon started another youtube trend apparently haha. It seems like everyone's making videos on selling out.
We're going to have to see the video before the accusations fly, but on principle the idea of you making a video for money shouldn't shock anyone. It is what you are going to College for, what all those classes are training you to do.
When you're in the real world and maybe have your own studio, if someone hires you to shoot a Used Car commercial, that's your job and you go do it.
The secret that you're getting paid for something you'd do for free - that's called The Bestest Job of All.
Yeah, this whole concept of "selling out" is something that annoys me too. When people say it, I usually just assume they're not interested in the music, they just care how cool it is. Because really, isn't the music the most important thing?
haha my name's alex and i was like, omg she knows my name!
i can't ever see you being a sell out really, you're too much of a people person.
people just tend to make a mistaken link between selling out and becoming well known, and if you didn't get money for what you did you'd have to flip burgers to pay for it and then you'd be too tired and would smell odd (cue music)
however you should reply to the myspace message i sent you :)
i feel the same as you i work on a farm and i WOULD do it for free just because i find it so rewarding and enjoy it i have some friends who hate their jobs where as i love mine.
I agree with you wholeheartedly. I feel like selling out has to involve making a moral compromise, and you don't sound like you've made any. Passing classes is different because you're limited to what the teacher wants and/or likes, but with YouTube, we want you to be YOU, and I can tell that you are genuine.
you cant sell out your amazing if you are doing something you love then youll never work a day in your life does that make everyone following there dreams a sell out ?
When someone is said to be selling out, it means their audience thought they were for the working man, but they're actually committing to actions that support corporate entities, usually because it also supports the individual selling out, oftentimes at the expense of the working man.
It's a very real thing. It's a phrase often abused, but when used properly, it means the person accused may be guilty of hypocrisy.
The problem is people are mistaking Selling Out (betrayal of personal integrity and morals for financial gain) with Commerce and Trade ( getting paid for your efforts).
i'm gonna keep this quick and the point. only because if you get me talking about music and/or the music business i could talk about it for a while. and there are just not enough characters for it
I see selling out as selling something you hate or doing anything you don't want to do just for the end result of a paycheck. like you said if you'd do it for free but just happen to get lucky enough to get paid for it.. i say good on you! gotta make a living.
oh, and it seems that people like to pigeonhole 'selling-out' as any form of change in an artist. even though most people don't take into account that everyone is human and change is imminent, whether that be personally, musically, or lyrically.
influences change, this that happen in ones life changes them. whatever. people resist change and if that happens they get pissed and just yell that they're selling out. i'd say 75% of the time this is what alot of people think selling out is...
Julia, anyone who suggests that you are a "sell-out" does not know what that term means. Most people define "selling-out" as someone who compromises their basic principles and beliefs about what is right or wrong for the sole purpose of making money. It is far more than just doing something you don't want to do for money. The person who works in fast food has not sold out. The person who exploits others for money has.
very impressive video..keep up the good work!

Agree, agree, agree. These people don't know what selling out is...
Green Day (sellouts)-they're not themselves anymore.
My Chemical Romance (sellouts)- they go with what makes them popular.
Julia Nunes (definately not a sellout)- she does it cos she loves it and she makes people happy!!
Avril Lavigne (not a sellout)- she changed... I don't like her music now but that doesn't mean she's sold out.
Foo Fighters (Definately not selling out)- they do it because they want to...

Finding ways to be compensated for your talent and creativity is a noble art unto itself.
w0smith 2 years ago 2

I wouldn't worry about "selling out" if I were you. Some people really expect you to keep doing what you're doing without getting money to live off? Really? Stupids.
I think people have their little "back pocket" artists that they like to have for some reason and they don't like it when the artist gets a bit too big for the pocket.

i can explain this better now and what i mean is you stay true to yourself, you are not doing things your way just 'cause you can, but because it's genuinely what you want to do. i wish you all the best in continuing to do this.

You are not a sell out -- people clearly don't know what the term means. You need to perform in the Washington DC area -- many venues around.

Tzadeck 2 years ago
sellouts suck hardcore!
but, i define sellouts as musicians who sign with major record labels and stop writing the music that's true to themselves, and write music that's not really who they are, but sells more.
so i do not think you're a sellout. and i hope that never happens. keep being awesome
DontEatTheFish73 2 years ago
I agree with you... people think it's selling out if you get money for doing something that wasn't very hard.
Flipping burgers is a lot of work so we "deserve" the money if we make it that way..... editing a video is significantly less work, but it's the same concept. With the HP thing - it's like being offered a job. (I was picked to do it too.)

Julia has been doing what she loves to do for a while. Now someone has given her an opportunity to do what she likes to do for money...how is that a bad thing? The whole selling out thing is something people use to make others feel bad about their achievements. It's overused and a little ridiculous. If a band is playing dive bars for years and some record label gives them the opportunity to make a bunch of money and get their music out to thousands...again...how is that a bad thing?
ianconcidine 2 years ago
Julia, honestly, I don't think you should worry about trying to prove to people you aren't a sellout. The only way to prove it is to keep doing what you are doing and don't second guess yourself.
As for the HP project, it sounds to me like it's your first step into the world of being an advertising professional. How you described the lead-up is pretty much how the pros work and there's the paycheck at the end. Had that hit you, yet?
ArgentFox 2 years ago
These people who accuse you of selling out.....do they have jobs ? Do they know that people need money to survive ?
And to have an opportunity to do something you love...AND get paid for it.....well, those types of things don't come around very often in life.
Just let Julia Nunes do what Julia Nunes wants to do and to heck with the few people who just don't understand the world...the REAL world we live in.

By the way, this is the first randomly weird comment I've made towards you so I hope you don't ignore me lol

hahah so i was intrigued, it would be very different for me, but i got a cool idea, and wanted to do it
like i said, even though i'm not an HP girl, i would've joined the contest just cause i like the concept. hahaha but they messed up and asked me early and now i'm getting paid for it. WOOPS
JuliaNunesTalking 2 years ago
Wow, a reply from the mighty Nunes herself!
The fact you would be happy do it anyway for free means you didn't sell out. I'd also say that having seen your HP vid, it still had a very Jaaaaaa-esque feel to it, even though it wasn't your typical kind of vid as you said.
Ultimately though, most people criticising you aren't mature/old enough to be entitled to an opinion - afterall, until they've got experience of the real world how can they give qualified opinions on real world situations?!
mongoose081980 2 years ago
I also think think that anyone who is a true fan of yours wants you to make some money. You've provided your true fans with free entertainment for years now, bearing your inner-most soul at times (The Conversation cover is a perfect example) and it's time you had the success you truly deserve.
Anyone who doesn't wish you the greatest of success and all the rewards that accompany that, on the basis they might not get free entertainment, is a truly selfish person who's not worth your time.
mongoose081980 2 years ago 12

I wish just ONE person would be like "ok, I was one of those people who said you were a sell-out and I see that I was wrong." too much to ask?
probably.

Hell no.. so fuck 'em
you rock so hard it should be illegal!
Gibsonmac1981 2 years ago
Hi Julia!

She sold out!" what they really mean to say is, "I'm jealous that she's getting paid more than me!" It's one of those terms that loses its meaning by virtue of the next generation being exposed to it before they're really old enough to comprehend it, like when my brother was little and he thought 'cutting someone off' just meant getting in front of them.

and besides I don't see you sitting here judging other people and telling us what we need to do with our lives. There's nothing wrong with cashing a check doing what you like to do though.
agltbialik 2 years ago
selling out is just losing touch of your old roots/yourself through the process of becoming more and more popular. i don't think you will, you are too awesome. just because you go tour places and actually sell some albums, doesn't mean you're "selling out". you are still the same ol' kiddo i saw featured with "into the sunshine". i don't think i'll call you ol' kiddo anymore. but yeah, keep on rockin'.

Selling out is a concept only teenagers and immature adults believe in. Don't worry about it.

Tom Lehrer wrote a song about this (and if you don't know who Tom Lehrer is use some of that HP money and get his Box Set off of Amazon).

The problem is people are mistaking Selling Out (betrayal of personal integrity and morals for financial gain) with Commerce and Trade ( getting paid for your efforts).

I agree

i'm gonna keep this quick and the point. only because if you get me talking about music and/or the music business i could talk about it for a while. and there are just not enough characters for it
I see selling out as selling something you hate or doing anything you don't want to do just for the end result of a paycheck. like you said if you'd do it for free but just happen to get lucky enough to get paid for it.. i say good on you! gotta make a living.
jeez i should just make a video response..

oh, and it seems that people like to pigeonhole 'selling-out' as any form of change in an artist. even though most people don't take into account that everyone is human and change is imminent, whether that be personally, musically, or lyrically.
influences change, this that happen in ones life changes them. whatever. people resist change and if that happens they get pissed and just yell that they're selling out. i'd say 75% of the time this is what alot of people think selling out is...
