Atheism is the RELIGION of "random coincidence". Atheists believe that everything exists by a long line of random, impossible coincidences that somehow culminated in life and human consciousness. Atheism requires more "blind faith" than all religions put together. Life and consciousness are impossible, yet they exist. We are characters in someone's lucid dream, and that someone is "God". All is energy, energy is thought. All exists in the mind of He who made it within and of Himself.
@PainHoarder That's absolutely ridiculous. First, evolution by natural selection is the opposite of random coincidence. It is no coincidence at all that we are the way we are - our genes have survived millions of generations to make us this way. Every one of your ancestors was fit enough to reach age of reproduction. Every single one. If they weren't you wouldn't exist. This is no coincidence.
Second, atheism cannot be a religion because it has no beliefs associated with it. All it says is that we don't believe something. You are also an atheist, by the way, when it comes to the Roman, Norse, and Hindu gods. By your logic, you now have 2 religions, your atheist religion about those Gods, and your (I assume Christian) religion about the Abrahamic God. Surely now you can see the problem.
Christianity is for the weak. Its an easy way out without having to think. Non-believers have the ability to think for themselves, which makes them stronger. I guess it takes a brain to see that... which this guy obviously "left at the door"
@shadesters Well, at least Christianity doesnt make us smug, childish, assholes who like to make fun of other people who believe different things. Christians can think for themselves too. They just choose to believe in something different than you. I'm sorry if we like to believe that we actually matter. Time to grow up dude.
@redshieldshatterer "Well, at least Christianity doesnt make us smug, childish, assholes who like to make fun of other people who believe different things. "
Really...? That's why christians hate everyone of other faiths, even other sects of christianity, all because of different beliefs. Christians hate gays because they don't believe they are born that way, when it's becoming more evident that they are. Christians like to think that "only they" matter, and others can rot in hell. Nice.
@shadesters No actually that is what asshole Christians do. Good Christians follow what Jesus taught which was basically love God, love yourself, and love your fellow man (and woman) as if they were family.
@redshieldshatterer Actually, most christians believe what their extremist leaders and preachers do. They only put on a facade when alone in the real world, but when in church on sunday, they hate everyone who isn't like them. I have seen it first hand with people who call themselves good christians. It's like a mob mentality. Most are two-faced and bigoted when they are in their comfort zones. Not every one of them, but I would have to say the majority are like this...
@shadesters I never said that most Christians were good Christians. Hell, i'm not one. I'm a strong believer, but that is it. I don't read the Bible or anything although I will be geting to it. It is sad that so many just believe the preachers. Preachers are human too. I don't listen to preachers. Most Christians who go to Church feel like they have too, but they don't. @PainHoarder True, but when you add religion to the mix, people start to think their ill feeling towards others is somehow justified. I'm not saying that eradicating religion would solve all our problems overnight, but it sure isn't helping when so many people have so many different beliefs all around the world. Just look at the Islam vs Christianity debate going on in the world today. Atheists just stand on the sidelines in disbelief as two equally unbelievable religions fight for control.

Atheists, even educated ones, often make the mistake of connecting atheism to some rather ignorant idea of 'survival of the fittest' Humans do not now nor have they for eons truly lived by survival of the fittest. In fact, with humans as opposed to animals, it is and has been for some time the most unfit who have been helped along to the top. Christianity does the same thing by inculcating that we are all equal. What humans deem as 'fit', is a cultural contstruct not an effect of nature.
@goodndite it is the most common misconception that darwin said"survival of the fittest" and that that is what atheists believe. it was "adaptability that leads to more probable survival" that darwin stated in his work. please get that right first. as for the survival point, i agree, most technology is so designed to eliviate the condition that people with poorer genetic makeup have an equally likelihood of surviving as possible. im unsure, but are you saying this ties in with christianity?
@goodndite Humans are animals. And until recently we were very much under the pressure of natural selection and to some extend we still are. A good example for this is the evolution of lactate tollerance. Also there are many more people with sickle cell anemia in the parts of Africa with high rate of malaria. This is a direct adaption due to natural selection because heterozygots for SCA are protected against malaria.
@reafdaw01 if your gonna talk about evolution, please, make sure you get your facts straight. For a disciple of the mighty Hitchens you have a pathetic understanding of your own beliefs. there is a HUGE difference between evolution and mutation. Trun the other cheek. Unnatural and also destructive. The spirit that drives this religion is a demon itself and a deceitful one at that.
The chief problem I had with Christianity is that it is to my eyes and experience for all intents and purposes in its effect, a very feminizing religion. It disrupts, dilutes and generally attempts to squelch the masculine spirit in men in much the same way it accuses atheists or secularists of doing.I find it to be a weak and convoluted spiritual path.Just as I do not need nor do I tolerate those obssessed with science to dictate to me what it is I believe, I feel the same way about Christianity
While I despise Christianity, there is alot of stupidity on both sides of the debate on religion in general. I was a Christian at one time. Hey, we know Jesus is alive and multitudes across the world are turning to Him. So leave these haters of Christ to their own petty ideas. Get out there and help people who are really looking for truth. They're everywhere!
@AL77JUL77 I'm a hater? You don't understand what an atheist really is. Yes, there are religious AND nonreligious people filled with hatred, but that doesn't justify, prove, or give evidence for the claim that a god exists. It is important for you to learn here and now and forever that an atheist is nothing more or less than someone who has examined all the evidence provided for the existence of a god and are simply not convinced.... Hatred has absolutely and definitively nothing to do with it.
@domsaleo.... And you're a wonderful human being created in His image. A fantastic individual who is kind, intelligent and capable of great things. You were knitted in your mother's womb by God's hands. There's great promise in your life to make a difference here on this earth. You are above petty things and small arguments. All the hairs on your hair are numbered by God; He is intimately aware of all your needs and cares. So call on Him when the time comes. Cheers, mate. AL77
@AL77JUL77 And why couldn't all of these explanations be of something completely different? Why MUST it be GOD? Are you saying everyone with a different belief is wrong? Sounds pretty hypocritical.
Place a bed pan under a man & the floor, for a short time, remains dry. Teach the man to put a bed pan under himself & the floor stays dry for a long time.
"Christianity has something for those who are not strong, who are weak."
Where was Christianity during the 200+ years of the crusades, the little kids molested in today's world ( the Church not only didn't help those helpless kids but they tried to hide it), where was the church during the Holocaust (the Church turned away and did nothing, they didn't even voice their disagreement for what was happening)
"No God. No master," was a slogan often used by the women in early women's lib. The women were alone against the church.
The early American South considered "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal" a violation of the plainest revelations of Divine Law--i.e. Christianity.
@baigandine And it has to! I saw somwehere that there are two steps to brainwashing: 1. make them feel like shit, destroy their self-confidence. Then 2. Swoop in with the "good news" that despite the fact that you when without god are a horrible, impotent being who is incapable of doing anything right, God loves loves you and wants to save you (at least, that's the case with Christianity, but the basic mold is everywhere).
I disagree with Hitchens on the concept. Christianity sprung up amongst the weak, is widely popular amongst the most downtrodden sections of society. It is, to pull out that old saying "An opiate for the masses"
It keeps them weak. It says...don't bother trying, you'll be strong next time. Things will be evened out in the next life. It keeps the weak in their place...and the strong love this. The greater the economic disparity, the bigger chance that the strong will be in league with a church.
Yes and no. The Christian comeuppance for the weak/meek in the afterlife might have served a purpose back when there was no hope that thing would never get better in this life.
But the ones insisting on religion for the weak today are the neocons, the ones who want to keep the weak/people in check. I'm sure Christianity has always been used this way. I'm just saying that in the past, the weak/people may still have benefited from it.
@user203 people who believe dont do so because they are dumb. they do so because they want to believe in a more optomistic reason for life. I guarantee you that I am much more intelligent than you. not bragging, its just a fact. I have an IQ of 167 which, is higher than 99.99% of people so im pretty confident that that statement is usually true. I am a Christian, and i got there behaving completely rationally and on my own terms. Science by no means proves that God doesnt exist. To the contrary
These comments are indicative of an undeveloped mind. I wish for no further discussion, halfwit, as you have already proved without a shadow of a doubt you are an intellectually, morally and emotionally redundant liar.
By the way, don't call me potty mouth. Another insult of that ferocity and I might just have a mental breakdown. Christ, you're boring.
@GenericHandle sorry buddy, but its pretty much alive only in your head, and the heads of the so called "professors" at liberal colleges. How they could possibly be educated and teach things like Keynesian economics which has NO scientific evidence or support whatsoever while completely disregarding classical economics, which, in every case has proven to be the only viable economic theory is beyond me. Their curriculums are biased too, its all Shaw and Voltaire and no Adam Smith or John Locke
@GenericHandle Yep, you're a fucking sheep alright. Go die in a fire.
I've met Christians who were decent people who would go out of their way to help strangers.
I've met more people who called themselves Christians, but never read the Bible or know anything at all about their so-called religion. Did you know Jesus preached against organized religion, and that's one reason they had Him crucified? I bet you didn't, you seem like an MTV watching douchebag.
Atheism is the RELIGION of "random coincidence". Atheists believe that everything exists by a long line of random, impossible coincidences that somehow culminated in life and human consciousness. I've read all your comments plus the ones on your profile. On that basis, there is absolutely no way I will debate an intellectual incompetent like you. Not only would it be a waste of time, but debating you would be recognition that you are actually worthy of intelligent discourse, which would be a blatant lie.
Oh, and as for your claim of teaching at UWS, either:
a) You're lying
b) UWS has let its standards slip so far that they are literally letting bigoted, close-minded, irrational Christian Fundamentalists join the teaching staff
Either way it's ridiculous, and judging from your posts on this video and the comments on your page, no one likes you, respects you or thinks that you have any semblance of a brain in your vacuous skull. Cretin.
Haha. Creationists like you are extremely good debaters. But when you are put on the spot and told to provide positive proof of your claims you completely crumble. Points in case; every single creationist trial in America. The creationists failed miserably because they simply could not answer straight forward questions. So no, I won't debate with you, as debating creationists is akin to bashing ones head against a brick wall. I left UWS coz it was a shithole...I can see why you teach there....
Ummmmm, if Peter Slezak doesn't know anything, or is a 'poor mans atheist', then why the hell did you reference him in support of your argument and then finished with 'well said, Peter'? Dr. Slezak has forgotten more than you'll ever know you cretin.
Dr. Peter Slezak taught me at UNSW for a year, and let me tell you that in NO WAY would Dr. Slezak EVER support creationism or anti-science. By claiming he supports you, you are sullying his reputation.
Why do christians think they hold the patent on kindness and humanity? History suggests otherwise. Chhistians should lower their tones and show some the shame they are famous for.
Science is not a closed belief system as is religion. In science facts are accepted after rigorous trials which leave little or no doubt of their truth. One then can accept those facts as truth, no faith involved. It comes down to "accepting" proven facts not "believing in them" which is the big difference. Science is, as ozricci says, always open to seeking new facts which may change older accepted facts. This does not create a problem but is welcomed in science.
And that's where science and religion differ 'my friend'. Science will put it's hands up and say it's wrong, whereas religion will never do that. And how can you say that science isn't growing, that's just retarded. Did you have computers, telephone, cars, etc.. 500 years ago? No because science has brought them about . Science 'cannot yet' prove many things because science, unlike religion, grows with experience.
Science is only proof, if an idea fails then it's disproved and new ideas created proven or disproved until an answer is found. Science is growing and more things proven every year, just look around you. You're sat at your computer now, without science it wouldn't be there. What more proof of science do you need. FFS
So go on mattetho, show the evidence for your particular version of the supernatural. So many competing version of gods and goddesses and fairies and goblins. Make it nice and coherent. I'm not against philosophy (logic, reason) being involved. We can't base things simply on what some people have written in ancient books.
Why does science have to "prove" itself?. Epistemology teaches that the key is rationality - proportioning a hypothesis to the grounds for holding it.
The scientific method is self-consistent, and coherent. And the success of science is excellent grounds for considering it a rational endeavour. Science might not have been successful - but it has (bad luck to the thiest). Unlike the spectacular failure of the god hypothesis to explain anything. The most unsuccessful hypothesis in human history.
Can atheism provide solace for the weak the way christianity does?
First, you consider people weak - which is insulting to them
Second - atheism or agnosticism provides REALITY for people - not fantasy of life, whereby the individual can develop the ability to become self-reliant and self-governing toward independence
Poor mattetho thinks that by being obnoxious his bluster might be taken for something sensible. But alas, he just shows himself to be incapable of understanding a simple point (typical of the self-centred childishness of many Christians. If he tries to think (it must be difficult for him) he might actually realise there are religions other than his, and these religions don't get the luxury of being given public holidays for their festivals - only for the superstitious nonsense of Christianity.
Just saying that someone actually agrees with you (when it's clear that they don't) is a pointless approach. You need to argue your position. I can simply say "mattetho knows he's wrong". But what does that achieve?
If you think carefully about what I've said, I know that you'll realise that you're wrong. See?
And we see the typical irrationality in the Christian mindset. We see the typical red herring response because they are so blinded by their narrow-mindedness. What has serving homeless on the streets got to do with it? Nothing.
So I'll explain it again. In Western societies only Christians get public holidays for some of their religious holy days. People of other religions do not. So the system is discriminatory, the typical lack of fairness endemic to the Christian belief system.
Judea Christianity is just another form to try to enslave the weak minded people. I do not need a fukking fairy tale of a book to tell me what is right and wrong, or how to live. Fuck god, fuck his son jesus fuking christ, and fuk you christians for trying to give me false promises with your manipulating ways.
Great words but you are a slave nonetheless. Irony is cruel indeed. What is more you are a slave to a much baser and more pathetic entity. Greed. Not yours. But you serve (and are a loyal servant to be precise) another greed. Your anger is placed correctly at religion but its directed by the ones who are enslaving you. Keep bickering about non consequential matters, keep us divided.
Actually it's more like not having a belief in any gods. Simple. theism to atheism is like hair colour to baldness. What flows from that is the request that those who are theists to provide evidence for Thor etc. The absence of evidence is evidence of absence !
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
you cant have (no religion) unless you are a follower of Christ. true Christians only follow Gods 2 commandments.
Athiest are religious! they worship their self. The non believers are mostly that way, because of mans false, lying, teachings in the so called church. Athiest are smart enough to know its wrong, but not sure how to find whats true!
well your wrong about athiest worship themselves, because a different kind of people do that, LaVeyan Satanism actually believe in self worship. But that is still a religious system, where as athiest have no religion
Because i read the new testament for myself. I am like you, I just didnt believe all that crap. After readin it saw i had been lied to. Dont ever believe hear say!
and to pay the church... gods wants that too, o ya and 10 things that we must do, half of which are to believe in god... or to suffer for eternity. Are you telling me that this doesnt make nonbelievers sound like inferiors who just dont get it and are doomed. so much for caring for others.
The truth is were not to pay anyone, thats just lies of mans religion. Its not in the bible! You wouldnt believe some of the things they come up with. the bible does say if you see anyone in need, help them if you can. thats it.
arnt there 10 commandments decreed by god? Why not believe some things and believe others? totally contridictary belief. athiest worship facts but have no religious structure.
Naturalists (atheists) have an excellent way of getting to the truth - science. No other approach has had even a fraction of the success of science. In fact no other approach has had any success.
Religion is belief in supernatural entities creating and/or running the world. Buddhism doesn't have a god as such but is still steeped in the supernatural. Certainly naturalism goes with the evidence - it's nature all the way down.
He looks like he has regained some of his youth. The tours over the past two or so years have been making him look bleak. Perhaps he was provided with a Thai massage or something.

It is important for you to learn here and now and forever that an atheist is nothing more or less than someone who has examined all the evidence provided for the existence of a god and are simply not convinced.... Hatred has absolutely and definitively nothing to do with it.

AL77

I could go on and on.
dfrutled 2 years ago
"No God. No master," was a slogan often used by the women in early women's lib. The women were alone against the church.
The early American South considered "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal" a violation of the plainest revelations of Divine Law--i.e. Christianity.

In fact, Christianity MAKES you weak, the same way nursing a bottle of whiskey won't make you stronger.
baigandine 2 years ago
@baigandine And it has to! I saw somwehere that there are two steps to brainwashing: 1. make them feel like shit, destroy their self-confidence. Then 2. Swoop in with the "good news" that despite the fact that you when without god are a horrible, impotent being who is incapable of doing anything right, God loves loves you and wants to save you (at least, that's the case with Christianity, but the basic mold is everywhere).

Can someone please tell me what Hitchens is saying at 2:47? I'm having trouble hearing him because of the audio.
LordEsel88 2 years ago
I disagree with Hitchens on the concept. Christianity sprung up amongst the weak, is widely popular amongst the most downtrodden sections of society. It is, to pull out that old saying "An opiate for the masses"
It keeps them weak. It says...don't bother trying, you'll be strong next time. Things will be evened out in the next life. It keeps the weak in their place...and the strong love this. The greater the economic disparity, the bigger chance that the strong will be in league with a church.
DouglasF23 2 years ago

Their curriculums are biased too, its all Shaw and Voltaire and no Adam Smith or John Locke
Porojukaha 11 months ago
@GenericHandle Yep, you're a fucking sheep alright. Go die in a fire.
I've met Christians who were decent people who would go out of their way to help strangers.
I've met more people who called themselves Christians, but never read the Bible or know anything at all about their so-called religion. Did you know Jesus preached against organized religion, and that's one reason they had Him crucified? I bet you didn't, you seem like an MTV watching douchebag.
PainHoarder 6 months ago
Atheism is the RELIGION of "random coincidence". Atheists believe that everything exists by a long line of random, impossible coincidences that somehow culminated in life and human consciousness. Atheism requires more "blind faith" than all religions put together. Life and consciousness are impossible, yet they exist. We are characters in someone's lucid dream, and that someone is "God". All is energy, energy is thought. All exists in the mind of He who made it within and of Himself.
PainHoarder 6 months ago
*sigh*...idiot. Non-believers are actually the fastest growing 'religious' demographic in the West. They are the exact opposite of a dying breed.
I disagree with pretty much everything you said, including your absolutely ridiculous and nonsensical claim that 'science can't prove itself'.
That comment alone is enough to relegate your opinion to the intellectual dustbin, you fucking dope.
GenericHandle 2 years ago 3
I've read all your comments plus the ones on your profile. On that basis, there is absolutely no way I will debate an intellectual incompetent like you. Not only would it be a waste of time, but debating you would be recognition that you are actually worthy of intelligent discourse, which would be a blatant lie.
Go away now. You're boring.
GenericHandle 2 years ago 2
Oh, and as for your claim of teaching at UWS, either:
a) You're lying
b) UWS has let its standards slip so far that they are literally letting bigoted, close-minded, irrational Christian Fundamentalists join the teaching staff
Either way it's ridiculous, and judging from your posts on this video and the comments on your page, no one likes you, respects you or thinks that you have any semblance of a brain in your vacuous skull. Cretin.
GenericHandle 2 years ago 2
I left UWS coz it was a shithole...I can see why you teach there....

fail troll is fail your arguments got destroyed by ozricii and RhondaH... you make atheists proud
lailum 2 years ago
Science is not a closed belief system as is religion. In science facts are accepted after rigorous trials which leave little or no doubt of their truth. One then can accept those facts as truth, no faith involved. It comes down to "accepting" proven facts not "believing in them" which is the big difference. Science is, as ozricci says, always open to seeking new facts which may change older accepted facts. This does not create a problem but is welcomed in science.
RhondaH 2 years ago 4
And that's where science and religion differ 'my friend'. Science will put it's hands up and say it's wrong, whereas religion will never do that. And how can you say that science isn't growing, that's just retarded. Did you have computers, telephone, cars, etc.. 500 years ago? No because science has brought them about . Science 'cannot yet' prove many things because science, unlike religion, grows with experience.
ozricii 2 years ago 8

"Science cannot prove itself"
Science is only proof, if an idea fails then it's disproved and new ideas created proven or disproved until an answer is found. Science is growing and more things proven every year, just look around you. You're sat at your computer now, without science it wouldn't be there. What more proof of science do you need. FFS
ozricii 2 years ago 9
So go on mattetho, show the evidence for your particular version of the supernatural. So many competing version of gods and goddesses and fairies and goblins. Make it nice and coherent. I'm not against philosophy (logic, reason) being involved. We can't base things simply on what some people have written in ancient books.
dbes02 2 years ago
Why does science have to "prove" itself?. Epistemology teaches that the key is rationality - proportioning a hypothesis to the grounds for holding it.
The scientific method is self-consistent, and coherent. And the success of science is excellent grounds for considering it a rational endeavour. Science might not have been successful - but it has (bad luck to the thiest). Unlike the spectacular failure of the god hypothesis to explain anything. The most unsuccessful hypothesis in human history.
dbes02 2 years ago
Can atheism provide solace for the weak the way christianity does?
First, you consider people weak - which is insulting to them
Second - atheism or agnosticism provides REALITY for people - not fantasy of life, whereby the individual can develop the ability to become self-reliant and self-governing toward independence

Poor mattetho thinks that by being obnoxious his bluster might be taken for something sensible. But alas, he just shows himself to be incapable of understanding a simple point (typical of the self-centred childishness of many Christians. If he tries to think (it must be difficult for him) he might actually realise there are religions other than his, and these religions don't get the luxury of being given public holidays for their festivals - only for the superstitious nonsense of Christianity.
dbes02 2 years ago
Just saying that someone actually agrees with you (when it's clear that they don't) is a pointless approach. You need to argue your position. I can simply say "mattetho knows he's wrong". But what does that achieve?
If you think carefully about what I've said, I know that you'll realise that you're wrong. See?
dbes02 2 years ago
And we see the typical irrationality in the Christian mindset. We see the typical red herring response because they are so blinded by their narrow-mindedness. What has serving homeless on the streets got to do with it? Nothing.
So I'll explain it again. In Western societies only Christians get public holidays for some of their religious holy days. People of other religions do not. So the system is discriminatory, the typical lack of fairness endemic to the Christian belief system.
dbes02 2 years ago
We get FORCED to take the holidays. Which other religions get paid public holidays in Western society for their religous events?
You're claim of hypocrisy is nonsense.

22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

22:39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
22:40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
