In fact, with humans as opposed to animals, it is and has been for some time the most unfit who have been helped along to the top. A good example for this is the evolution of lactate tollerance. Also there are many more people with sickle cell anemia in the parts of Africa with high rate of malaria. I can tell you that in many many cases, the arguements that Christians are homophobic, bigoted or somehow oppressive to women sound a bit cliched and played out after a time. Science is not a closed belief system as is religion. In science facts are accepted after rigorous trials which leave little or no doubt of their truth. One then can accept those facts as truth, no faith involved. It comes down to "accepting" proven facts not "believing in them" which is the big difference. Naturalists (atheists) have an excellent way of getting to the truth - science. No other approach has had even a fraction of the success of science. In fact no other approach has had any success.

Religion is belief in supernatural entities creating and/or running the world. Buddhism doesn't have a god as such but is still steeped in the supernatural. Certainly naturalism goes with the evidence - it's nature all the way down.
