You forgot to mention the Independent's interest in this. Tony O'Reilly, who at the time was controlling the INM newspaper group also is a main investor in Providence Resources which has found gas off the coast of Clare and wants to bring it ashore, on similar terms to Shell, (no royalities, etc). So by helping Shell now he can smooth the road for his own project.
