@TheReggiereg1 u know u cant isnt this the djregireg who makes sample vids???? lol if ur not then no u cant get those epic sounds that u get off vinyl
i wasnt able to watch the whole video, does this machine have its own sounds ? and is it midi can i use it on logic ? and as a stand alone of course ? thanks
you can only use one synth set at a time and they are mainly analog synthish sounds with a few piano and strings sounds. The beat making is very easy though and making custom kits is pretty easy too once you get the hang of it. The sound is very pro to me, you can add comp and eq. It has full midi outs but not usb. Hope this helps. It works for me. I like it/
@hoostavah i have a question, i got a studio and i use the Akai MPD, and i wanted this xr to use it when not having acces to the studio or just on vacantion, is that really so good? i mean i sell profesional hip hop beats that i make on the mpd and on the keyboard. Do the sound of this small console is pro? I found it limited having about 600 sounds build in. Can u use it over midi as a controler? I seen u have drums track / one shots and the synth
@hoostavah So like i was saying i seen that has 3 tracks that u can use. But let`s say i want to use from the synth section a pioano and a violin can i do that? or u are limited to 1 single type of sinth to play on a given time period.
@24trivium24 Yeah, Just hook the lineout from the XR20 to your Korg linein. I run my XR20 to both a Kaossilator pro and a Kaosspad 3 and both are really compatible.
can u attach it to a roland recording studio so u dont half to record ur beat then hold the mic up to the speakers to get it recorded onto the roland?
I'm a professional guitar player - for over 12 years, and need a good drum machine that can accomodate rock n roll sounds, NOT just Hip hop. Can this drum machine accomodate rock patterns?
I cant even believe they still produce drum machines where you can't import your own sounds...Talk about a brick wall for creativity...I think i'll save up for an ASR-10 or MPC 500.
i played with one today after waiting like half an hour cuz some guys who are failed djs in the making were just messing around with it lol it was easy to play with and i came up with some cool stuff on it in less than 10 seconds, im interested
just played w/ one today, made me so mad that i got the mpk25 for the "mpc" pads, they suck on the mpk25 and this lil xr20 is so sensitive, its dope as shit.
I am using an XR20 as the main drum machine in my setup which consists of a Roland JD800 and a Sequential Circuits Drumtraks (secondary drum machine.) This unit is as programmable and editable as anything running on a computer. The XR20 takes time to learn, but with it you can do any kind of music needing "beats" that you can dream of.
Many preset patterns suck. Turn them into better ones by mangling them with parts from other presets - 1 way to have mad fun with this unit.
Yeah I love my JD800 it is very versatile and mysterious, I think you'll love the Matrix 1000 it looks like another megasynth.
To the guy that was asking if the XR20 could do dance and techno the answer is hell yeah. I have been programming "techno breaks" into the XR20 to mix things up. The only thing about the XR20 is you have to read the manual to memorize how to do stuff. things like changing bars-beats are set up in an odd way. Hit "Record Setup" and scroll over to page 7.
This is why i love youtube! you can either get desert, or disaster I choose desert my friends. I have learned so much with this man thankyou guys. And i do have an akai and its great. Im still learning about it.

i have this and when i try to connect it to my PC, my computer wont recognize it. i am trying to connect to fl studio. i dont know anything about the channels on the machine. can somebody help?
i was thinking of getting this for my first drumming machine, but i hate mainstream i am strictly underground head and mc pioneers so i want a different sound so can anyone recommend a drumming machine thats portable, make my own samples, transfer by usb. my list that i have is alesis sr18, akai mpc 500 but its too much so i'm not going to get it until i have money, and sp 404 which is the dopest i think so please help me out underground hip hop heads i will try to keep hip hop fresh thanks
well what do you mean by underground? underground does'nt really have a sound, it just means it ain't mainstream. A lot of the up and coming "underground" guys like hudson mohawke etc use everything and mix it together, eq, change things to make a sound that sounds good. The problem with drum machines is they only come with programmed sounds. Get a MPC1000 and you can sample all ur own sounds so u have more control. Either that or use software like everyone else.
this shit is wack son. after like 4 beats all the sounds are damn near the same. it's corny get an mpc.
i think the xr20 is a waste of money unless you are a complete beginner, but i mean if u buy it get your use out of it, and return that shit within your warranty and get your money back.
i was fortunate enough to spend a solid week with the xr20, i love the response on the pads, the preloaded samples are ok, but other than that its more of a toy.
i will tell my friend to return this and get the mpc 500 instead for more capabilities.
I dont see how the price is justified with this. Or any other drum machine/ Beat "production" station, everyones beats are going to end up sounding the same. Yes it has nice sounds and its a nice tool for the studio, but £270? I havnt used one yet, but I would like to and see what all the fuss is about.
This video sux !!! I just ordered one of these from Sweetwater, expecting it this Friday... Only reason I aint pissed is because I have played with it numerously at the local guitar center

If you can afford it....get an mpc. Eventually when you start making your own drums and other sounds, the mpc will be useful because you store sounds right on there. I hate sampling other people's beats, but I just got mpc 5000 yesterday and I'm loving it.
So whats the best MPC to buy? im not rich and i was thinking about this one but it seems kinda shitty i wana be able to sample fully and this wont do it.
You all need to stop fighting over the internet and watch the damn video. Unless your going to get off your computers and fight in real life and record it and post it on youtube.
Hey Mark tell the suits at AKAI that they need start using better parts let alone a/d converters. ROger Linn is about to drop a machine that will crap on anything in akai's current and future lineup.
Nah.. the MPC500 (not 5000) is about $600, and this one is about $325. The MPC costs about twice as much, but you can add your own sounds and is more useful in the long run if you are making hip-hop music.
damn... i didnt even know they sell stuff like this... looks like its a not a good deal to me, considering that you can do all this and way more with FL studio....
yeah agree, but why pay so much for something (299 usd), when you can achieve the same thing with something cheaper? (say like software)... in addition to that... a lot of keyboards or controllers come with drum pads. like my axiom and fantom... cheers! :)
because it's much more effective to have a beat production unit that you can actually tweak and get used to with your fingertips rather than expressing thoughts and simplistic ideals through synthetic digital music. speaking from a predominantly production oriented electronic musical career, i would highly advise those who manufacture sounds in the studio to invest in either a roland or akai product for beat manufacturing especially if you ever have the desire to duplicate your sound live.
first i would like to say that both this akai and a software based production unit (with controller), like say.. FL STUDIO, are both consider synthetic in my view because they both used samples. I do agree that people who intend to perform live should invest in a actually keyboard or of some sort... But if i were every going to play live, i wouldnt trust this akai to play the drums, i would rather have real drums.. But yeah ROLAND IS THE WAY TO GO! cheers :)
this is the most stupid thing i've seen soo far, it luks like a kids toy. Akai hav put some shit sounds on this and there all mainstream hip-hop soo ure beats ain't gnna sound any different from ure neighbour if he was 2 buy 1.
And u can expand the kit so ure just left with the shit sounds they give you. I recommend a MPD24 or a Korg padKontrol. DO NOT FALL FOR THIS SHIT PIECE OF EQUIPMENT
I bought the unit about 5 days ago, and the sounds are very good, this is not a sampler unit, but a drum machine it has easy navigation, once you read the manual, for around $300 excellent buy
oh no doubt! the sounds that COME with the unit are tight as hell BUT lets say when you explored that machine in its ENTIRETY! there wont be any room for plugins such as BATTERY with is pretty in my opinion the best. With MAUDIO Trigger Finger, Akai MPD24/32 or my own personal baby, The Korg padKontrol. You can buy ridiculous amounts of audio software and each one of these devices will adapt and be useful if you wanted to hear an UNLIMITED amount of different sounds. And the devices are cheaper!
Ok! here goes! this is a 2 for 1! Unless your a DJ, then ONLY would you buy some crap like this. This is NOT a controller which allows you to play ANY plugins you want to. I completely agree with ajafreestyle! BassBeatsProductions! i would recommend Korg padKontrol (which is what i have), MAUDIO trigger finger or MPD24/32. These are devices that you can used any audio recording software with. AKAI XR20 sounds are stock sounds so there no room for anything new. no plugins, no software, NADA!
The Akai XR20 is the lamest attempt of a company trying to exploit the hip hop culture i have ever seen!!!! And I know Eric the owner of Chronic music (who did the sounds for the xr20)
He's a 45 year old white guy!!!! LAME! LAME! LAME!!!
This seems like a gimmiky toy with extra flashy lights & weak unimaganative sounds built into it. . its like one of those cheap casio keyboards u get for your kids to play with.
Thats why the sounds r so mainstream. . Akai r cashing in on this new primitive weak rap mainstream genre.
it looks like this has identical electronic hardware and the same exact reference manual w/ the necessary content changed to apply to each model and brand.
otherwise, the designs are the same; it is simply the "style" that is different.
This thing is wack...you can't sample into it !!!! Give us a mini sampler!!!! It's worthless to have an akai drum machine that doesn't sample...gimme a break with this crap!!! Akai prolly has stock holders and they're starting to put crap out just to make a buck...those sounds are garbage
are you all fking deaf?? if you all can't even hear what a dumbfuck is saying on a video I can just imagine the crap yall produce.. it has idk how many "USER" presets, X ammount of bank presets, meaning.. it already has sounds, and YOU CAN, CREATE YOUR OWN.. it has midi interface and audio inputs.. therefore you can communicate with keyboards. Regarding Akai comming out with "CRAP" is not the share holders is all sales they're making shit for all budgets and caliber of producers.
yeah man, creating your own just means "tweak the onboard sounds by x amount. it doesnt mean adding your own. to be honest when i spotted this i nearly shit my pants with excitement, when i watched the vids i was like oh- okay, thats pretty lame. i want one that size, battery powered, and with sampling. now that would make me part with my cash.
are you all fking deaf?? if you all can't even hear what a dumbfuck is saying on a video I can just imagine the crap yall produce.. it has idk how many "USER" presets, X ammount of bank presets, meaning.. it already has sounds, and YOU CAN, CREATE YOUR OWN.. it has midi interface and audio inputs.. therefore you can communicate with keyboards. If you want a "mini sampler" get the MPC500. About the same size and costs twice as much. Note that Akai XR20 is marketed as a "drum machine" with built in samples. Akai seems to be putting out less crap than what comes out of your mouth, though.
akai is fucking everything up its turning into a consumer line instead of a professional format i might be switching to roland products full time i dont like where this is going iam very concerned ive been using akai since the 80s everythings going from sugar to shit
this is essentially the same machine as the Alesis SR18 drum machine with a slightly different look. Courtesy of Numark who now own both Akai and Alesis.
yup, they've been the same company for some time now. If you look at the pictures of both units, you'll see they share the same rear panel. They both have 32 mb sound sets; have 100 preset/100 user patterns; a/b pattern and fills just like the alesis sr16; feature EQ, compression and reverb effects. Those LCD screen layouts look identical as well. Also, if you look at the XR20 reference manual at the bottom of page 8, you'll see that the SR-18 is referred to by mistake!

waste of money, get a mpc 1000 to 2500 and get full control of your music people...

can you also stop posting stupid questions and personal opinions here instead of creating yourself a lycosIQ account?
profalbern 3 years ago
My old Alesis drum machine sounded better than that. Why not just ge the mpc500 and buy the drum kit? Same shit, more value.
disconnexions 3 years ago
doesent the mpc500 cost like 10 times more..
Senshow91 3 years ago
Nah.. the MPC500 (not 5000) is about $600, and this one is about $325. The MPC costs about twice as much, but you can add your own sounds and is more useful in the long run if you are making hip-hop music.

can you upload the beats back to your computer so you can record over the beat

I like the lights. I'll stick with my Fantom XR, Yamaha RM1X, and my new Korg R3 keyboard. It's a strange mix, but it works for me!
digitaljosh 3 years ago
Lol this is pretty cool... its not the BEST but its definitely not TOO LAME...
I mean its portable.. what do you expect?
bow2urepnoy 3 years ago
damn... i didnt even know they sell stuff like this... looks like its a not a good deal to me, considering that you can do all this and way more with FL studio....
its2realj 3 years ago
producing is about a lot more then 1 single piece of software. man kids these days lol.
6thCreated 3 years ago
yeah agree, but why pay so much for something (299 usd), when you can achieve the same thing with something cheaper? (say like software)... in addition to that... a lot of keyboards or controllers come with drum pads. like my axiom and fantom... cheers! :)
its2realj 3 years ago
because it's much more effective to have a beat production unit that you can actually tweak and get used to with your fingertips rather than expressing thoughts and simplistic ideals through synthetic digital music. speaking from a predominantly production oriented electronic musical career, i would highly advise those who manufacture sounds in the studio to invest in either a roland or akai product for beat manufacturing especially if you ever have the desire to duplicate your sound live.
peopleareloudmovers 3 years ago
first i would like to say that both this akai and a software based production unit (with controller), like say.. FL STUDIO, are both consider synthetic in my view because they both used samples. I do agree that people who intend to perform live should invest in a actually keyboard or of some sort... But if i were every going to play live, i wouldnt trust this akai to play the drums, i would rather have real drums.. But yeah ROLAND IS THE WAY TO GO! cheers :)
its2realj 3 years ago
this is the most stupid thing i've seen soo far, it luks like a kids toy.
PDushiyanMusic 3 years ago
I bought the unit about 5 days ago, and the sounds are very good, this is not a sampler unit, but a drum machine it has easy navigation, once you read the manual, for around $300 excellent buy
yourztoenjoy 3 years ago
oh no doubt! the sounds that COME with the unit are tight as hell BUT lets say when you explored that machine in its ENTIRETY! there wont be any room for plugins such as BATTERY with is pretty in my opinion the best.
Nysasq 3 years ago
does anyone know if you can use sounds from a hard drive for this machine? sum1 plz answer!!!!
BassBeatsProductions 3 years ago
Ok! here goes! this is a 2 for 1!
Nysasq 3 years ago
kl thanx. im definatly not getting this shit
BassBeatsProductions 3 years ago
The Akai XR20 is the lamest attempt of a company trying to exploit the hip hop culture i have ever seen!!!! And I know Eric the owner of Chronic music (who did the sounds for the xr20)
He's a 45 year old white guy!!!! LAME! LAME! LAME!!!
ajafreestyle 3 years ago 2
This seems like a gimmiky toy with extra flashy lights & weak unimaganative sounds built into it. . its like one of those cheap casio keyboards u get for your kids to play with.
Thats why the sounds r so mainstream. . Akai r cashing in on this new primitive weak rap mainstream genre.
Phuzz828 3 years ago 2
you dont need fl studio with that you make the whole beat with the xr20
nakaproductions 3 years ago
does it work with fl studio
kerossoundz 3 years ago
well if you can record vocals into id imagine you can rig it to play other samples you put in by using the vocal format
if that tickles your fancy

Re: Alesis SR-18
it looks like this has identical electronic hardware and the same exact reference manual w/ the necessary content changed to apply to each model and brand.
otherwise, the designs are the same; it is simply the "style" that is different.
what flavor beatbox do you desire?
shaft9000 4 years ago

DirtyMoney23 4 years ago
yeah man, creating your own just means "tweak the onboard sounds by x amount. it doesnt mean adding your own. to be honest when i spotted this i nearly shit my pants with excitement, when i watched the vids i was like oh- okay, thats pretty lame. i want one that size, battery powered, and with sampling. now that would make me part with my cash.
lolitaXcomplex 4 years ago
DirtyMoney23 Nicely put sir, I agree, this looks like a great little machine for the price, way to go Akai!!!

If you want a "mini sampler" get the MPC500. About the same size and costs twice as much. Note that Akai XR20 is marketed as a "drum machine" with built in samples. Akai seems to be putting out less crap than what comes out of your mouth, though.

how do u put soundz onnit from the computer ?
PiaNoFieND88 4 years ago
I don't think you can, It's a drum machine and not a sampler..

akai is fucking everything up its turning into a consumer line instead of a professional format i might be switching to roland products full time i dont like where this is going iam very concerned ive been using akai since the 80s everythings going from sugar to shit
soundwave6147 4 years ago
i figured that if you like presets, this is a machine for you.
since i have a 2kxl. i wouldn't switch.
ques75 4 years ago
why wouldn't you buy a mpc and use your own 'ORIGINAL' beats?
Akai have lost it :eyes roll: muppets will buy it, and there are plenty of those:/
H4NDCRAFTED 4 years ago
Bollocks, I'm buying the Linndrum 2 when it comes out.
Akai screwed it all up and people have to use 3rd party O.S's whats that say about them.
Don't support their crap.

lol its a ever more useless 500, long live the old MPC's!

this is essentially the same machine as the Alesis SR18 drum machine with a slightly different look. Courtesy of Numark who now own both Akai and Alesis.
mutantvisions 4 years ago
numark owns akai!?!? wut@?
ques75 4 years ago
yup, they've been the same company for some time now.
