I remember this so well from my high school days. It was very emotional at the time. I've been looking for this version for a long time. Glad I found it here.
I remember listening to this over and over again when I was little. I always knew I had this 45 record and was cleaning crap out and came across this one as well as several others. This sure brings a tear to my eye when I listen to it. I was 5 years old when it came out and to think i still have the record wow what a pack rat I must be lol!!!!
There were quite a few spoken word hits back in the early 70's. I never heard of these myself up until I downloaded a torrent called Billboard top 100 hits from 1946 and onward. Last time there was a spoken word hit, it would of been in 1999 when Baz Lurman had everyone's free to wear sunscreen. You can correct me on the spelling of his name.
@traxonwax After 9/11 I remember a song which features audio clips from that day's news, but I don't know if it charted on Billboard. I think it was something that some radio station put together, and then got passed around to other stations -- which is exactly how this Tom Clay song was created. Tom was a radio DJ in Los Angeles who put together the audio clips and hired studio session singers to do the vocals.
