Could it also be too that you did not mow those particular dandelions because they are right against the wood and your mower did not get that close? Just saying ;)
@thewaterfalloflove I get those fat bumblebees, some honey bees, tiny parasitic wasps, which are all extremely beneficial. Also many types of other pollinating insects such as butterflies, male mosquitos and ants. It's a micro-wonderland out there! :)
ps: Plant white clover. It has a fantastic smell on warm days.
awe! I have always had chickens but turkeys are a bit terrifying in their full stature. they are so cute as little fellas! And no kidding you have a peacock! A lot of people have them here in Niagara. Thats definitely louder than my rooster lol
Excellent stand of clover and a nice lookin garden! Great to add to the compost pile if you have a bagger attachment for the mower. This is also an excellent feed for a hutch full of rabbits, and they even give you back great pellitized manure...double duty use for the clover.
My mother did this for years in her flower garden and always had the most beautiful displays. She would go to a local sheep farmer and collect 1-2 bushels of sheep poop. Then to make her tea she would half fill burlap bags and then steep the bags in 55 gallon drums of collected rain water. In her garden she could literally shuv a stick in the ground and it would grow!
what brand compost tea are you using? Is it homemade stuff? If so can you tell me the nutrients you are using... Thank you for the video, its a good one
@donnieboy007 I make my compost with chicken manure, straw and grass clippings. I do a steeped method which takes only 24 hrs to produce a strong tea. It does some insane good for the plants. Thanks for tuning in Donnie. I'm always happy to see people enjoying the video. :)
So... can I use fresh grass clippings and veggie scraps (say carrot peelings for example) right into the brewer? Or does it have to compost into soil fully?
I had the same thing happen in my garden. I send you a message and an attached video. My veggies looked like the ones from that Gilligans Island episode. You know the one where they had huge (but theirs were because of radiation). The zucchinis were as long as my hand to my elbow... wow!
The clover is edible, and the white and red clover flowers can be dried and used to make Clover Tea to drink. The Dandelion is also edible as a salad greens and the roots are medicinal. So I wouldn't exactly call Clover and Dandelion a Weed.
I stopped tilling my garden a couple of years ago , and just mow around the beds and in between the rows. My soil structure has improved greatly , And yea Compost tea works great even the weeds love it. Great vids keep it up .
@mikelynch28strong ....really? dont drop out of school, we can all see you need it. id quit my day job in a heartbeat so that i could rub this guys feet every night. props to you praxxus, i love your life, knowledge, your garden and your birdies <33
@Praxxus55712 Don't know if you've tried this yet, but dandelion is actually a great wild food! I've been looking around my yard for big enough leaves to harvest, but I only get the ones like the first you showed us. I'm really looking forward to getting those salad/stew worthy ones you got there once I apply some tea around my garden! Thanks for the video.
You need to get some honey bees on that clover! Clover honey is awesome!! Clover will also attract bumble bees which will help polinate your crops ensuring seeds for next year and beyond! Great Video love your garden!
@Praxxus55712 yeah u know u might be right coz I get my tea from the bin that is already composting now. But if it has already finished composting how will it stil take out tea? It's usually dried out by then. I burnt the leaf tips coz I didn't dilute it and poured it straight on the soil. It's been 4 weeks now and I still get yellow leaftips, even with the new leaves. I don't wanna flush the soil coz I feel it is a waste of ood minerals. I never added any more tea since then.
@shahsoon that's not tea. it's leachate. compost tea you have to make. got got to put your compost in a mesh bag and hang it in a bucked of declorinated water. pour some molasses (no sulfur) in the water and airrate it with an aquarium air pump. you can use the bubble stones fron the pet store. after about 24 hours got got compost tea
@WhoaDammit1967 yup thanx I had my naming wrong, all along I thought it was called compost tea, I even found another name for it Bokashi. I just need to know if lechate or bokashi tea is enough for plants or do I have to add something else to fertilize the soil? I need to do some more research.
Now that you've grown so much clover. Mow it and use the clippings as mulch inside your raised beds. You probably won't need to use compost tea so much in the future.
the peacock scared the hell out of me!! damn just seing some funny turkey and then... AAAAAAAAAOOOOOOWWWWW AAAAAA AAAAAA great... jumped out of the couch.. nice video by the way. :-)
Another reason you have those clover and weed in the grass because when you mow ... it chops up all that flower in plant and re-seeds the plant right back onto the soil to regerminate.... try bagging if it isn't too large of an area.
I am just about to start composting for a garden too, do you box the areas to keep weeds out? Looks like it works if you haven't cleaned them by hand. Thanks for the video, nice garden and I heard your peacock say ' my head, my head', lol
LOL! We went to the zoo where my future sister-in-law heard a peacock for the first time and you should have seen her jump. Those things are surprsingly loud
Sir my uncle used to raise turkeys on his land once u get them domesticated he used to let them run around wild on his property. Though he was scared of dogs and hunters he made a cage for the turkeys to jump over into a safety cage during the night time. I'm only suggesting this because my animals run free and visit me random times of the day. It feels better than going into their cages twice a week.
Did you know that the sticky juice that you can squeeze from a dandelion stem is pure latex? If you get enough of the stuff, you can make anything from non-allergenic surgical gloves to car tires (as a rubber substitute) if you have enough of it. IMO dandelions are hated by gardeners everywhere but they do have a useful purpose to serve mankind if humans recognize the opportunities that nature provides.
@Praxxus55712 That being said, bees are amazing for both the environment and food production for humans, and bee-stings are used in many places to relieve arthritis pain.
Sounds pretty bad, How about getting stung by Jellyfish on your wrist? Happened to me. Around 200 stingers left in my wrist that ached and itched for 2 months. I've never felt pain of that intensity.
@saeidmomtahan Luckily there are almost no jellyfish in or around my garden. :) I've heard stories about being stung by jellyfish and it's definitely something I couldn't even imagine handling. It didn't leave any permanent damage to your wrist? Just reading your comment made me cringe. OUCH!
@Praxxus55712 No, there are nothing left of the stingers. It took almost 3 months for them to clear out. I have always been allergic to all sorts of sting, bees, ants, what ever. So this really freaked me out. But I'm glad it happened. With the horror death stories I have heard of Jellyfish stings, I feels good to know I survived the jellyfish sting
The quick remedy is Vinegar or if that's not available, pee. yes, pee! that will slightly relieve the excruciating slightly. Great video BTW
So clovers bring in nitrogen like you said, and dandelions bring in deep nutrients with their tap root, composting their leaves is a great thing too! My grass doesn't grow very well but the dandelions grow well in my yard, I use their leaves as my greens for my compost and it's great, the parents don't want me eating them sadly. They have good vitamins, Europeans eat them with their salads I hear.
How the heck did you get a peacock into your yard!?
@Praxxus55712 this is my first time using compost tea and its my third batch. i water my garden with nothing but compost tea every other day with no water in between. its been a week now and see no results...am i using too much tea? will too much compost tea hurt my plants? or should i use compost tea once a week or so? or maybe im mixing the wrong kind of tea. i am using bradfields luscious lawn/garden fertilizer( alfalfa base) and worm castings and molasses with air bubbles.
@MrDoberman101 You may want to just water your garden only when it needs water. Allow the soil to dry out a bit to give the roots a reason to push out and down. The tea I use is the basic kind. I really don't know much about the multi ingredient type.
Eat the dandelion leaves (and flowers) in your salad. I've tried them and they are ok. There's no reason to throw out your dandelion greens while spending time/effort getting other greens to grow. Enjoy!
Nice Videos man... I actually live not to far away in Hudson WI. Any Ideas on where I could find some peacocks to raise I think they would really help keep the ticks at bay..

@Respect4life100 They're defiitely amazing birds. Loud, but gentle and beautiful. They'll also keep grasshoppers and just about every other bug under control. I got mine as chicks from hooover's hatchery. They have a website at hoovershatchery . com
@Respect4life100 Thanks. I had a showing last week. Waiting to hear from the people. I sort of hope they don't make an offer so I won't have to move in bone-chilling cold.brrr-rrr-rr-----r
I love your baby turkeys they are so cute.i have been around grown turkeys but i have never seen baby turkeys before how sweet.Man thats the life out in the country with all that stuff you grow the vegetables and the birds. Thanks
Holy crap! That dandelion is amazing and kind of scary lol.
Do you use any commercial fertilzers or any other additives? We are thinking about using tea on about 2000 acres of alfalfa... videos like these are encouraging!
praxxus,im wondering how cold tolerant are earthworms? red wigglers, my plastic bin is under the car port. i live in south ga and we dont have winters like minnesota, but we do have some nights below freezing now and again.im wondering if i need to make arangements to heat them on cold nights or bring them inside into the laundry room which aint gonna go over real well with my wife, lol,if ya know what i mean.
@myshizzleneal Earthworms go deep during the cold months to keep from becoming wormsicles. You have pretty mild winters, so I'm betting you could just push leaves or dead grass up around your bin and on the lid to hold in temps and prevent freezing. When it gets really cold they slow down but survive. The leaves would prevent actual soil freezing. Even an old blanket covering it would do the trick.
@Awakenedblue East Central Minnesota. It's fantastic in the warm months. The winter months are fun too I guess..............if you like ice and snow and ice and snow. :)
@william7331 I don't actually know the limits of how long. I have had mine for as long as a few weeks. It starts to smell after awhile so it's probably best to use it within a week or two?
Very entertaining & informative vids. Hearing your peacock reminds of the one(s) I would hear every day growing up next to a large dairy in San Diego county!
@glenniesan I got the peacocks because I remembered the ones that roamed around free when I was a kid in southern California. Seems there's lots of them down there for some reason. lol
My guinea pigs would wet themselves over those dandylion leaves. My guinea pigs squeal when they hear me coming, especially carrying green foods for them!
do you turn your dandilion leaves into salads? i heard they are good. in my garden, i use just old grass, and i use your method of hilling everything. it works so well!
@huronhorde I haven't used the dandelions yet, but a friend of mine does alot and says they're fantastic! I just have too much lettuce, spinach and other green right now so if I added dandelions to it I'd probably turn into a rabbit. lol
@huronhorde You should take a look at a channel called MIGardener. Luke could probably teach you what you need to know about potatoes. Tell him I sent you. :)
@MRSketch09 I really don't do anything with the turkeys except enjoy them. Their poop does do into the garden with the chicken poop after it's composted. They don't lay many eggs like chickens. Btw I did an update on the baby chicks. It should be uploaded pretty soon.
The abundant about of nitrogen could be coming from the bird dung also.. you know how much a bird poops in one day??.... alot!

Eat the dandelion leaves (and flowers) in your salad. I've tried them and they are ok. There's no reason to throw out your dandelion greens while spending time/effort getting other greens to grow. Enjoy!

hey can i ask you a question i have mushroom compost what can i add to it for my garden bed ?
munkhzaya84 8 months ago
@munkhzaya84 You can definitely mix it into the soil of your garden. It will enrich the soil and boost your plant growth in no time at all.

They have a website at hoovershatchery . com

Every part of the dandilion is eddible, so that is a bonus to your compost tea application! Poultry eat them, too.
What sort of organic matter was in your compost? Thanks.
Jefferdaughter 1 year ago
@Jefferdaughter My compost has chicken manure and straw. That's literally all I use. It sure does a wonderous job. :)
Praxxus55712 1 year ago
Holy crap! That dandelion is amazing and kind of scary lol.
Do you use any commercial fertilzers or any other additives? We are thinking about using tea on about 2000 acres of alfalfa... videos like these are encouraging!
StriderGTS 1 year ago
@StriderGTS The only additives to my garden are compost and compost tea. I think the tea is what makes everything go nuts. lol

LOOKS LIKE YOU NEED TO COMPOST THOSE DANDELIONS AND MAKE YOURSELF SOME DANDELION ROOT COFFEE TO DRINK!
cockfight420 1 year ago
Dandelion root tea is extremely good for the liver. And it tastes good, too. Just use a weed puller and clean and dry the roots.

praxxus,im wondering how cold tolerant are earthworms? red wigglers, my plastic bin is under the car port. i live in south ga and we dont have winters like minnesota, but we do have some nights below freezing now and again.im wondering if i need to make arangements to heat them on cold nights or bring them inside into the laundry room which aint gonna go over real well with my wife, lol,if ya know what i mean.
myshizzleneal 1 year ago
@myshizzleneal Earthworms go deep during the cold months to keep from becoming wormsicles. You have pretty mild winters, so I'm betting you could just push leaves or dead grass up around your bin and on the lid to hold in temps and prevent freezing. When it gets really cold they slow down but survive. The leaves would prevent actual soil freezing. Even an old blanket covering it would do the trick.
Praxxus55712 1 year ago
where do you live?!
I find it very beautiful
Awakenedblue 1 year ago
@Awakenedblue East Central Minnesota. It's fantastic in the warm months. The winter months are fun too I guess..............if you like ice and snow and ice and snow. :)

Every part of the Dandelion plant is edible. You can make a tea out of the root.
allen21478 1 year ago
I'd be inclined to put some landscaping fabric and rocks around my raised beds so they don't get taken over by mutant clover and dandellions.
KallyJones 1 year ago
@william7331 I don't actually know the limits of how long. I have had mine for as long as a few weeks. It starts to smell after awhile so it's probably best to use it within a week or two?

Very entertaining & informative vids. Hearing your peacock reminds of the one(s) I would hear every day growing up next to a large dairy in San Diego county!
glenniesan 1 year ago
@glenniesan I got the peacocks because I remembered the ones that roamed around free when I was a kid in southern California. Seems there's lots of them down there for some reason. lol

do you turn your dandilion leaves into salads? i heard they are good. in my garden, i use just old grass, and i use your method of hilling everything. it works so well!
huronhorde 1 year ago 9
@huronhorde I haven't used the dandelions yet, but a friend of mine does alot and says they're fantastic! I just have too much lettuce, spinach and other green right now so if I added dandelions to it I'd probably turn into a rabbit. lol
Praxxus55712 1 year ago
@huronhorde and if you feed dandelions to your chickens, the yolks are supposed to turn a nice rich orange color :-)
CraftFamilyMO 7 months ago
@huronhorde You should take a look at a channel called MIGardener. Luke could probably teach you what you need to know about potatoes. Tell him I sent you. :)

SO... are you going to sell the turkeys? or... do you eat there eggs? Use there poop as fertilizer?
Anyways, cute baby turkeys.
MRSketch09 1 year ago
@MRSketch09 I really don't do anything with the turkeys except enjoy them. Their poop does do into the garden with the chicken poop after it's composted. They don't lay many eggs like chickens. Btw I did an update on the baby chicks. It should be uploaded pretty soon.
