  • Thanks for posting! I live in Chicago and have never seen anything like this over here, but I read about them in a book by Brian Solomon entitled "Railroad Signaling" and thought it would be cool to see them in action!

  • nice horn on this DM&E unit

  • Griswold originally designed these signals with yellow stop signs that had black lettering. They gradually disappeared over the years as they rusted, got destroyed, stolen or whatever. The cool thing about the stop sign was the fail-safe design. It was hooked up to a weight which was held in place by an electro-magnet. If the signal system lost power or became inoperable for any reason, the weight would be released and rotate the stop sign into place where it was visible to oncoming traffic.

  • them gates are now gone

  • Question: Is that a Griswold bell? I would assume so, but the audio is distorted a bit.

  • Whoa. I didn't know they still used these crossing signals!

  • WEIRD HORN

  • What important Lesson learns a Motorist in driving School?

    1. a Stop Sign MEANS Stop.

    2. flashing Red Lights at a Railroadcrossing MEANS Stop.

    I counted 3 Cars.

If you are in doubt,( LOL)ask Auntie Selma and Pattie at Springfield DMV

  • You found a Griswold.

Have a cookie. You earned it.

  • At about 30, you can see a bug flying around near the screen.

  • Great catch on the Griswold signal.. Its been years since I've seen one..

  • Why did you not show this rare signal turn off?

We've seen plenty of box cars with graffiti.

  • I was not there taking the video as I could not go that day. My friends took it. They were chasing trains, getting to different spots, so I guess that is why they didn't keep recording.

  • Oh. Thanks, chick.

    Well done steady tripod-mounted video!

    I always show everything.

Also always show grade crossings when possible in case there is a mishap.

This STOP sign implies that drivers should stop and then go if they can - as they would with a boulevard stop sign.

Bad idea which should never have been done.

  • Unfortunately, these Griswolds along with another working set in Mason City on the ICE were removed from service during the late summer 2009.

  • Boooooo!

  • Bonjour, les films est excellent, je vous remercie ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

  • Thanx! I subscribed!

  • Thanks! :)

  • Nice Griswold! Do they have those crossings elsewhere on the DME? Thanx fur sharin'!

  • That's the only one I have seen.

  • Woah....was that a GNRR box car at the end - Georgia Northeastern Railroad?

  • it would of been neat if you film the signal when the stop sign was rotating

  • Actually, I do have a video of it, but never put it up.

  • can you upload it plz?

  • Sure. I'll just have to find it. I'll let you know when it's up.

  • thank you :D

  • Ok, it's uploaded. I posted it as a video response here.

  • Those old Griswold Signals are as rare as wigwags! Very good video!

  • Not a local

  • Chased the train all day. I beg to differ!

  • Who was the engineer then?

  • Why does that matter? I don't know who the crew was, but this is a local based out of Rochester.

  • Cause it wasn't a local, that's why.

  • Then what the hell is it asshole?

  • why am I an asshole? You are so rude, I am sorry I can't answer you now since you are being mean.

  • it was a local josh and jess know a lot more then you do and they know more then i do so dont talk crap and saying this

  • What dude?

  • the lights need to be brighter good video i cuold barly see th e light

  • After suffering through other people's trains vids, it's such a pleasure to come and watch one of yours, such as this great one - a rock steady camera, very clear resolution, nice angle shot, and especially, no telephoto. I really appreciate it.

  • Thank you! I can't take credit for this particular video as I wasn't there taking it (but it IS my camera). But I don't use telephoto usually...just not my style. And I'm glad you appreciate that. :)

  • Awesome find, Jess! That type of Griswolds is one of the rarest crossing signals to find in service anymore, even rarer than wigwags! Do the stop signs still rotate to face forward when the signals come on, and back off to the side when they shut off like they should? Try to catch that part on video sometime if you can.

  • NVM, now I see it was not you who took the video. Sorry.

  • Well, I have been to this crossing before, but not when it was in action. But Josh and Mike actually did get it when it first turned on in another video I didn't upload. The stop sign still does rotate into place. Pretty cool to see!

  • Sweet M3 horn!

  • since when is the challenger running and when is she coming to Kansas City?

  • The Challenger was on a trip from Cheyenne, WY to Rail Fest in Nebraska and then through Iowa and Minnesota and back. The trip is from Sept 18-Oct 9. It's in Iowa right now.

  • Dang the last time she went through KC in 1993 i was only weeks old! I want to see her since she has bing brought back from the dead!

  • im seeing more dme power here on the kcs

  • Yeah, that's what I have been hearing. I wish we would see more KCS on the DM&E!

  • amazing what a coat of paint can do for a 30 year old unit!

  • Yeah, no kidding!
