sometimes, if its possible. but otherwise i use a basic slipknot that tightens on itself, but i leave a bite in it thats attached to a smaller rope hanging down. at the end, i just pull on the smaller rope and it pulls the bite out, releasing the knot and allowing me to retrieve the rope.
