it's easier if you start with an upstroke so that you can make downstrokes on the low e string

I concur with baelzebubb...you can't play this with open Em tuning...gotta be E B E Ab B E. Why? Because at the end of each verse, Billy uses the slide to go from the G chord to the A chord. Incidentally, folks, I have been playing this in standard tuning for years and playhing it with open E tuning with a slide on one finger made it all make sense (and easier). And you should use this song to learn slide. Real simple stuff that you can use anywhere.

Nice job. On the original however, his guitar is tuned to an open E (and he uses a slide on his Johnny Cash finger). So just adjust your lick accordingly and it would be spot on

This song should never be played in standard tuning, this is also played with a slider. I know you all know this is played incorrectly and you don't care, but that's the wrong attitude to have, you should always try to do something the right way.
