  • Hey there, I was wondering how you play this game? I have a copy of Wizardry Gold that I used to play, but my vista won`t run it. Share your magic secret?

  • @MrTylerMatyas This is the original MS-DOS version of Wizardry VII, not Wizardry Gold for Windows (I believe Gold works in XP, though, but I don't know anything about running it in Vista). As for the DOS version, a program called DOSBox is the easiest way to play the game in Windows on a modern computer.

  • @Demiath Thanks. It works on vista, as well. Any pointers/tips?

  • Don't get obsessed with finding maps in time. I played this one through last month, and I had to chase down just one map. I think the warning in the manual against time wasting is largely directed at the Wiz 6 players who found no penalty in resting someplace for days at a time to restore all their spell points.

  • Yes, I eventually figured that out. Even at the time of recording this video (some 1,5 years ago) I knew that there was only one map you really needed to beat the game, but for some reason I was very obsessed with the map collecting early on. Starting with video nr #5 I got a more sensible perspective on things, though...

  • Oh, my goodness. What happened to Claire? She's now a cat in the Bard char. class.

  • what are some good dungeon crawlers can you tell me

  • Wizardy, Eye of the Beholder, Etrian Odyssey, Class of Heroes (which is almost a clone of this game), The Dark Spire, Lands of Lore, oh.. a whole slew of others all on various systems.

  • the only thing that kinda killed it for me was the "Suddenly, enemies!" routine, when i tried this game in like 94-95' i was already deep into Eye of the Beholder, World of Xeen and Strahds Possession. funny though as a youngster in the 80's i could sit and crunch exp for hours in games like Phantasie, M&M1-2 or SSI's goldenbox series, but i dunno, i guess you get spoiled after awhile being able to see and/or hear your enemy :)

  • hm, maybe i should try this game again, i played it alittle when i was young, but it never grew on me as Might & Magic or Ultima did, i still have it though on a RPG CD collection i made in my younger days.

  • Well, if you liked M&M and Ultima you should definitely be able to appreciate this (and probably also have a much easier time really getting into the game than I did).

  • You aren't going to like the three videos I'm uploading right now. I record a good chunk of me cutting a bloody swathe through this dungeon and grab the map at the end.

But know this: It's you who has addicted me to this game again. When I have a fire for an RPG, I go wild.

The maps/FAQ you linked to are REALLY helping though. I'm making good time, I think. (Got the map anyway)

I like your dual wielding party. I went with two-handed weapons only. I actually prefer dual, but Feiwill said no.

  • Well, I certainly don't begrudge you this thriumphant W7 comeback of yours; if I played a small part in making it possible, so much the better. And I'm obviously only competing with myself here, not with someone who's been mastering RPG gaming since Final Fantasy 1...

By the way, does anyone know if it is at all possible to find the maps needed to complete the game after NPCs have grabbed them? If I have to I'll gladly search the entire world tile by tile, but I need to know if it can be done.

  • Yes, of course. When you encounter a wandering NPC, exchange Lore with him. He'll tell you which race "is rumored to have" any map which has been snatched. Then cast a Locate Person to get a rundown on where each roving NPC is.

If the Rattkin, for example, have a certain map, well, there are only two who wander around: Ratsputin and Mick. And maybe one is dead.

Head for that map area and wander around, hoping to encounter the guy. When you do, either buy the map from him or kill him.

  • Dual is just fine. I played that way too (mostly). What I meant was: a one-handed weapon + a shield is not that great in this stage of the game. The shield is the bottleneck.

  • It was the same thing in Wizardry 6 - shields just weren't particularly useful. But I noticed that you said "in this stage of the game". Do shields get more useful later on?

  • Yes, some high-born shields (rare) have extra properties (visible via Identify) that might be useful. The AC bonus remains relatively flat IIRC. And it's still pretty subjective if those extra properties make up for a good secondary weapon. Personally, I prefer dual-wield or a sound two-handed gun. I think there's one (and only this one) really outstanding shield that can only be obtained by trading it for the LightSaber. But LS's probably one of the two best weapons in the game, so...
