@774434 Most likely pieces of metal (ie. paper clips, forks, small thin bits of metal, etc) were placed between the strings at the right intervals. It's called "prepared piano". If I'm not mistaken the term was coined by John Cage. I'm not sure if was the first person to prepare a piano, but I'm guessing no.
