Well, traindude70, was just in Chama and rode on Saturday (7/4). Too bad we didn't cross trails. Ran into Max with a gang of about a dozen guys up at Cumbres preparing to take a carload of brand new ties down the line. It almost brought tears to my eyes, remembering when it was just Max and three or four others on a speeder with a barrel of spikes and a couple of mauls trying to keep the railroad together. How exciting to see all the track equipment and supplies they have to work with now.
I work in the shop here in Chama and I'm sorry to say but it will be quite some time before #463 is back in service we are not doing repairs on her we are doing a total overhaul on her. Right now she is sitting in the shed till later in the year when we will take her boiler off to work on the frame but for now she sits.
That's for fighting fires that might be accidentally set along the right-of-way. When I worked there in the 70's every train was followed by a speeder towing a trailer with a tank of water and a pump. I think that was because we didn't have serviceable tank cars yet.
With working tanks at Cresco, Cumbres, Los PInos, Osier, Sublette and Lava (well, not sure if Lava is still in service), water for the boilers has never been a problem on the C&TS. On the other hand, the possibility of setting a fire up there is always a concern. During the six years I worked there we set several, but we were always ready for them and never had one get more than a few feet from the track.
If I remember correctly, one long is a request from engineer to conductor for orders, two longs means "go", three longs means "stop." As the train approaches Cumbres the engineer on the lead engine blows one, asking "what should I do, stop or keep going?" The conductor hand signals "stop." The lead engines acknowledges with three, and the second engine blows three so everyone will know that he was paying attention.
The HARLEY thing is harder to explain, so I will leave that to someone else.
I'm glad that somebody filmed these trains because I'm a train freak from childhood. Future generations will enjoy these as much as I do. I'm fifty one and I've been there and I've ridden the train. It's impressive!
What a beautiful engine #497. What a shame she isn't running any more. But rumor was at one time that after 488 was done being restored that another 490 class locomotive was next on the list for restoration. Hope they restore another 490 anyway.
The reason they retired her was because of her boiler time expired and she doesn't qualify for current standards. Unfourtnatly she will never run again unless she gets a whold new boiler. However a new rumor is that 492 is the next canidate for a 490 class restoration. Sombody was telling me she is the best looking and in best condition out of all the 490's out there including the durango and silverton.
492 is currently sitting in the chama yard awaiting her day in the sun which I think we all hope is very soon. however 489 I think is near complete in her restoration then 463 is next and then I hope 492 is the next canidate. Hope this helps
Currently she is sitting might also be recieving some cosmetic care but on the cumbres's offical new website it says to look for her on the rails this year or next year. She has also recieved grant money for the restoration so far everything is looking up for this locomotive.
489 is done and out, TWICE. 463 has her boiler off the frame and is currently being restored. 497 might see service again if she's needed but like you said her boiler is not as good as 492. She received a new boiler in 1948 I believe. The other K37 will most likely never run, unless somebody buys 493. The D&S wouldn't have ran 497 after she started needing work, they got rid of her. She'd be retired.
That K-37 is sitting in Silverton just on display last I heard 493 and the 498 that the durango and sliverton owns are currently up for sale but currently no takers have offered to buy those locomotives.
Engine 487 is my favorite, since she pulled my train when I rode the line in 1993. It's good to still see her in operation. When did the C&TS start using the watercars?
I believe it was sometime here in 2002 or 2001 don't know for sure. but I know they were used when colorado and new mexico were going through a drought and everthing was dry. I don't think they are used today however.
Absolutely nuttin. I just felt like using it, so I used it. I realize that not everyone shares my sense of humor, but that isn't my problem. I actually created this for my own fun and entertainment before anyone ever heard of Youtube and I share them here for whatever its worth. And I really don't appreciate your language little boy.
beautiful photography on the Cumbres and Toltec. I've been there. What an inspiration to get my model trains out of the box and start building my model railroad! Gothpapa, keep up the good work!
You are lucky the only one of the locomotives that were on here that are still in operation is 487! 497 and 463 went out of service in the end of the 2002 season.
also back in 2002 we were do in a lot of track work and the tank car was spraying weed killer so we could work on the track.

I doubt that, probably to go in the boiler should one get a bit low.

what's with 488's tender on 487
Strasburg1991 3 years ago
Could be that 487's tender sprung a leak so they borrowed 488's tender. It happens.
gothpapa 3 years ago
what happened to 487's original whistle?

They change um around......

Yes, I hope they restore another 490. In addition to the 497, they also have the 492,494, and 495. Of the three, the 492 is in the best condition.

Why did they retire #497? She was better off at the Durango and Silverton, they wouldn't have retired her!

Where is #490?
TVRM610 3 years ago
There is no such thing any more from what I have read and heard. It was it was retired in 1962 and then dismantled (scrapped) in 1963-1964.
CaptainAmericalives 3 years ago
I got confused. I mean't to ask where is #492?
