  • Hi Shawn. thanks for taking the time to put these videos together and share them. very much appreciated. I've been having a chicken wing problem at and after impact and have worked on this quite a bit. After watching myself on iphone video (swingreader app) I realized the issue is a stalling of my weight transfer to my left side resulting in my shoulders and arms passing my hips and creating this out of sync situation where my arms have to be pulled in to my body. how can I work on this ?

  • Thank You Mr.Clemens for fixing what my friends called the whirley bird at the top of my swing and then causing the the chicken wing on the way forward.Ordering your cd's as well.Thank you again.

  • Hey Shawn,

    Cool vid...how come your left arm bends at top of backswing when you hit real shot??

  • help shawn. i have a good and proper practice swing which is on plane. But during the actual swing i will always come across the line at the top..... always. please help as i have been working on it without success!

  • @oystersblue The issue is that if your left upper arm crashes into the upper rib cage, then the right elbow starts to pull away from the body and curls the club across the line; I have had the issue for a long time in my golf career and the problem started going away 12 years ago when I realized how the X-factor was destroying both my body and golf swing; please see "golf pro lesson stop crashing" and "Golf pro lesson fine tuning arm motion plane" Shawn

  • Thanks again Shawn B Donnelly Ottawa

  • Great lesson here Shawn - thanks!

    I've noticed Rickie Fowler has a noticeable breakdown of his left elbow entering impact - a minor chicken wing. 1) Is this a "flaw" that his talent is allowing him to get away with?

    2) I have this breakdown myself - how can I get my central nervous system to keep the left arm straight at impact? Or is this a non-issue?

  • @claytronica23 Well; The longest hitter in the world does it too as well as Lee Westwood who is a threat to the #1 spot; the key here is the crash free release to target! Shawn

  • Could You please hit the ball with that long shafted club? I can't do that without hitting myself. thx a lot

  • Thaks for the response. The vidoes were a lot of help. I think the drill in this video with the extended club not hitting your left side on the follow throug is key for me. I gripped way down on a seven iron to acheive this and I think I almost broke a rib...haha. With a couple more trips to the range I know your advice will have me hitting straight. Keep up the good work!

  • can the chicken wing move cause a pull hook?

  • Yes, and see "golf pro lesson the insanity of golf" to make sure you have the right focus to the target; if you make the ball your target, you are setting yourself up for a nice chicken wing collapse; see also "golf pro lesson timing and tempo update" Shawn

  • I had viewed this video a few times before but this morning I had a revelation about the release and followthrough. It has to do with the leading wrist not cupping in the release and followthrough, nor full extension to the target; nor recovery back to the body after the extension. It feels so balanced throughout the swing!

  • hi shawn ! nice to see you outdoor and with sunshine ! ; ) tks for your work from an italian golfer.

  • recently I have developed a bit of a fade bias on some of my shots. I think that this vid will help me release the swing better enabling me to hit a straight shot, when needed. Thanks

  • hey shawn iv commented youre videos before but i have some more questions that it would be great if you answered ok so my normal golf shot is like a 20 yard slice on a good day but if i want to i can make myself draw i was wondering if i should just play for the draw on every shot and just forget my old slice golf swing

  • Hey Josh!

    You want to continue to work the ball from both directions on a regular basis as this will balance your swing and keep it humming; Watch the "Golf Pro Lesson Hooks and slices", "Golf Pro Lesson Be a Solid Ballstriker" and "Golf Pro Lesson Tilted Spiral part 3" and let me know...Shawn

  • hey shawn im 14 years old and have a 14 handicap i have a problem after i come through the ball, and lift my right heel to fully turn, i slide my right foot almost to my left foot. when i try to not slide it, i top the ball and cant transfer my power to my left side to power through the ball, could you help me? -future pro

  • Hey Ferrari freak!

    Best is to continue to watch my videos starting from the feet together to the one leg drill videos to get the centered feel in the swing; then go to the rest of the videos for swing sequence, sequence power drills and downswing weightshift videos...all are on my "you tube Shawn" page of my website and if you want everything prioritized, I suggest you get my DVD! Shawn

  • do you post on golfwrx? that's were I often go to get swing advice

  • haha cheers, was only joking about no need for technique i actually work quite hard on it!! think its good that uve put all these videos up here for everyone to learn from for free!

  • gd videos but too complicated for me, think you should just try an hit the ball as hard ad possible no need for technique, much more fun that way!!!! lol

  • That's OK GM; it just means that you are not ready for the information yet; and you probably have some nice natural ability; You would like my "Golf pro lesson Through the ball" video...Shawn

  • Hi shawn i know this has no real relevance to this video but i have been really struggling with my golf swing. i take the club back then on the downswing my hands come through on a different plane(i think) and i am hitting everything either right of where im aiming or kind of toe shanking it. Do you know how i can stop this? much appreciate if you could reply. thanks ryan.

  • nice video!

  • hi shaun could u go on my user and see what im doing wrong in my golf swing!!! i feel if i have to stop in my backswing because i may overswing?? so could u please check out my video!!! thanks!

  • Hey man, thanks a ton for the advice. I need to get my swing up on youtube for people to critique. I think the idea of the swing feeling wide is the best advice, I'm off to try this right now. Unfortunately, I won't be able to get back to the range for a few days due to injury, but hopefully this will help.

  • The best thing about this video is when you said swinging back too fast causes the club to cross the line.

    The long shaft is great for chipping, because it keeps the left wrist firm through the ball, preventing a 'scooping' action at impact and reinforcing a single lever swing. For the same reason, in a full swing, the long shaft actually causes a chicken wing because it prevents your right forearm from rotating over the left. You may want to redo this video. Just my humble opinion.

  • No No No!!! :)

    There are a few concepts you have not experienced yet; I would have agreed with you about 10 years ago though! Many many teachers teach how to release the body or clear the body to allow for better extension through the ball to the target...BUT, when you remove the long shaft, you will get a release of the right hand over the left but it is in ascension or releasing upwards and away...have a look at the "Golf Pro lesson no Bones About it" video...Thanks for the comment! Shawn

  • Hi Shawn...I came across your sight last fall, got your CD over the winter have been viewing the videos on a regular basis while I reconstruct a much moe effective, repeatable swing. It is not possible to take it all in at once but on an ongoing basis I have had little discoveries that continue to enhance my swing and golf experience.

  • he bouces on his feet before the swing watch!!

  • I have played golf more than 2 years and had lessons from few coachs but I still cannot get exactly how a golf swing should be until I have watched Shawn's videos. Now I found my swing is much more fluid. Look forward to get more from your dvd.

  • Thanks for your comment Jessie!

    Shawn

  • Hey Shawn, really really helpful - I've been playing golf (badly - handicap 30+) on and off for a couple of years now, and this weekend after watching a number of your videos and taking the advice onto the course, I had a real breakthrough.

    By trying to get more width in my swing whilst keeping my weight braced on my left side, suddenly I was getting proper rotation, consistent clean contact and greater accuracy with all clubs. Had a few average holes, but most were par or bogey. Thanks again!

  • Fantastic! Thanks for the comment and keep it up! Shawn

  • good show

  • golfs cool

  • dmadras = madras, india?

  • hey shawn. yet another great video mate!

    now.. i noticed after watching videos of my swing, my club goes along way past perpendicularto the ground (maybe because of my baseball days)

    is this going to be a problem? and could it be causing my SAVAGE slice with my low irons?

  • Have a look at my "Golf Pro Lesson Proper Spine tilt" video which will address the overswing and the slice issue together;

    All my vids are on my website's "YOU TUBE SHAWN" page at shawnclementgolf dot com;

    Then see Braced tilt part 1 and 2 as well;

    Shawn

  • hey shawnn i love your vids.. they are really helpful, what i really like is that you are very clear and logical.. it is easy to understand the mecanics.. everything you teach in all your videos makes a lot of sense.. keep doing the great work! way to go! thanks for the lessons

  • hi Shawn, really like your vid's and have learned a lot from them. I have a pretty good backwsing and follow through but really struggle taking the club away from the ball on my takeway. I constantly the club way inside and my right elbow bent at this point, as well as "bowing" my wrists badly at this point. I get it back on plane perfectly at the top, but on my takeway am feeling real uncomfertable.

    do you have any advice or sulutions please?

    thanks a lot for any advice!

  • Hi Robin and thanks for the question and kind words!

    Go to my website and watch the following videos from my "You Tube Shawn" page: "Takeaway and starting the swing" and the "Student swing analysis 1 and 2" and you will get what you are looking for; Shawn

  • We teach whatever a player needs, no method!As long as a player has an angle of approach, speed,centerdness of contact,proper path, efficency,and the ability to hit all the clubs,we dont care how a player does it. Now if a player does not have the same great change of direction as you,we would probably trace it back to the upright clubs which raises your center of gravity and gives you steep hips and flat shoulders. But again, are these faults or just ideosychracies that make your swing fuction?

  • Fair enough! Thanks for the education on what you guys do and I will be sure to keep this in mind for the future;

    All the best, Shawn

  • You should work on your down the line camera angle before posting something like this on u tube. It makes your swing look even MORE across the line than it already is. Anyway just so you know, there is no "leadbetter way" as we dont teach a method. I would not change your swing closer to the ideal because...you have an angle of approach with a good swing path, so what we we change it for? So I guess your ATL move is not really a fault...is it Shawn?

  • Hey Man, thanks for the comment;

    It is all about making the swing as efficient as possible; I know many golfers have the ATL problem much worse than me and it prevents them from performing consistently; so this video is to help them get into a more manageable position and taking the resistance away from the hips in the takeaway is where I start. Next is working on their arm unit and so on...So, are you telling me that Leadbetter teaches no resistance for some? That would be great news!

  • Shawn is a gentlman and has helped me in my golf game more than any lesson or video previous to finding him on youtube. If you don't like what he does, go to another site and harass them. Shawn is more of a gentleman than many are, or he would ignore you. Most skilled golfers or professionals do not waste their time picking out crap to look at and start an argument. But, I realize these people exist.

  • Well said...

  • dmadras post your swing so we can see a perfect swing and you can explain all those angles and use some really big technical words. For free. Leadbetter is for the rich.

  • Hey Shawn,

    Is extra forearm and wrist strength absolutely vital in maintaining control over the motion? My uncle is really good and his arms look like popeye's! My wrists are really tiny and I'm worried that they'll prevent me from improving.

  • Your llong club is actually pointing at the two baskets of balls to your right. Is this an error or are you taking the club back on plane that is very natural, although not technically correct? I practice with the Leadbetter swing setter, which teaches you to have the shaft pointing down at the ball at 9oclock. I can do this with Swingsetter. But on the course I notice my shaft line at 9oclock is pointing way outside the ball (just like yours). Any thoughts? You are a fantastic teacher!

  • This is a good question for the tech/analytical person: To do it the Leadbetter way, you need to manipulate; you can do it easily without manipulation in my perpetual motion drill from the "Golf Pro Lesson Swing Plane" video; but when you start from the "Normal address" check out "Golf Pro Lesson Takeaway" video...they are all on my website at shawnclementgolf dot com.

  • hey shawn.. thanks 4 all the vids.. 1 question.. should the upper part of left arm be glue to the body at anytime during the swing..? thanks..

  • Yes; through impact; it will lean against the rib cage for extra leverage to compress the ball; you will feel it better using an impact bag;

    Shawn

  • i thought a chicken wing is where the left arms COMES AWAY from the body on the way through, not collaspe AGAINST it

  • Can you look at my swing please?

  • Looks great! Many solid things going on here like your extension to the target and the arm motion n the backswing; you could get lower in the knees (fell like you are applying pressure to the ground through your arches like suction cups) and just make sure you continue finishing your backswing so you feel like you can whip through the ball towards the target with ease and power; Shawn

  • Hey Shawn, great video, I have a quick question, I have a 0-4 handicap but my tendencies are to come over the top and recently i have been trying many drills such as feeling like im coming more inside leading with the hips, the results are still the same and I can't seem to fix it. Also I have the Tiger Squat on the down swing please help respond

  • The videos you want to watch are: "Golf Pro Lesson Arms Falling", "Golf Pro Lesson Fine Tuning the best Drill" and "Golf Pro Lesson Hogan Power Move" and "Hogan Power Drill"

    Let me know how things go, Shawn

  • Shwan,

    Your tip on spine angle was a great help in preventing my overswinging. Please check out this video. I'm unable to get the left side (wrists, arm, club) straight at impact. I feel I'm losing a lot of distance with the swing the way it is.

    I tried swinging with the left hand only of course everything is in a line at impact. I'm trying to swing the arms at the target and I get the same result as in this video.

    Thanks!

    Wish you were in Connecticut!!!!

  • Hey Shawn. Thanks for the great videos. Its amazing what you can learn, and how fast you can learn it when you have the right instruction! And check the articles on his website guys. They are brilliant too! Great work Shawn, from down in Australia.

  • You are welcome Putter King!

    Thanks for the great feedback; Shawn

  • shawn i just wana say you are a hero. my game has improved so dramatically just from watching all your videos thank you so much for all the great videos.

  • hi shawn, how about steep downswing and fowardtilt problem new episode. thank you!

  • This lesson also has been added to GOLF LESSONS TV along with your other great videos... Thank you Shawn.

  • when you watch many tour players down the line, you notice how they seem ever so slightly laid off. is this an illusion, camera angle, or an attempt to hooking, which many good players with high clubhead speeds suffer from? also, does a quick backswing lead to a overdraw or a duck/snap hook? it would explain why when i hook the ball, ppl say i swing too quick lol

  • Shawn,

    Thanks for that. My biggest problem is going across the line at the top. I call that move a "worble". My question is what triggers are there to let you know that your hips are fully turned? Is it possible to turn your hips too much as a fix to going across the line? Since I began turning my hips more and discovering momentum, my friends have noticed that I'm not across the line as much. Thank you so much!

  • The answers are in "Golf Pro Lesson Overswing", Golf Pro Lesson Weight Shift" and also the Golf Pro Lesson Leverage Uphill"; Be Stacked with arms staying in front of the body...Shawn

  • Shawn, incredible how that helps comiing across the line. I call it a "worble" when the club crosse the line at the top. My question is, is it possible to over turn your hips, meaning turning them too much? When do you know when your hips are fully turned?

    Thanks so much...

  • Hi Shawn, it seems like if you made this video just for me : - sliding hip instead of a rotation = socket

    - club crossing over the target line = top slice

    - weight on right foot (right hand) = no power/ top

    Please continue to make so instructive videos

    Greetings from France

  • Instead of the long shaft I stuck a $5.00 laser pointer in the end of my club. Works great. High tech, and cheap. Great points Shawn!

  • Hey Shawn, thanks a lot for your insightful videos. I think it's great that you share your knowledge with so many people freely. If I had more time I would come over to Canada for some lessons.

    Great stuff! Go on. Greetings from Barcelona

  • Funny enough I had a lesson with my pro today and he made me do the exercise with the long club. I was amazed of how much it revealed. Regarding my personal issue, I was using a neutral/weak grip and he (the pro) changed to a stronger grip. That eliminated writs rotation quite a bit, but still need to work with the long club. It's pretty hard... I whish you lived in TX Shawn! Thanks again.

  • Shawn, thanks again for this comprehensive video!

    One issue that I as a beginner miss a lot in all Golf books and other sources: Which knee / leg should flex and move how much in the backswing?

    Maybe you want to focus on this issue in one of your next clips?

    Thanks a lot!

  • In the "Golf Pro Lesson Stacked and Complete" Video as well as the "Golf Pro Lesson Catapult power" video you will see that the knees rotate with the hips and the rolling of the feet, they do NOT change flex; they move as much as they can while staying "stacked"

    Also check the "Golf Pro Lesson Weight Shift" for drills on this movement as well as the "Golf Pro lesson Hogan Power Drill" Video. That should do no?:)

    Thanks for the comment; Shawn

  • The "stacked and complete" answered in fact very well my questions about the leg movement. Thanks!

  • u want the club to point at the ball/target line, yet most teachers say you want it paralell with the plane at address, like the rotary swing, and one-planers. do you believe this or am i right?

  • Keep up the excellent videos Shawn! They are MUCH appreciated.
