This video has been at the very top of my favourites list for like three years, followed by a Rachmaninoff prelude. You are better than a Great, my friend. I wish I could get THIS version to play at my wedding!
this might sound really weird, but I found this song totally warped and slowed down on a cassette in my karaoke machine... and I never seen this cassette before. true story! creppy huh? and no this isnt a chain letter...
I love your style, and must have played this song 50 times or more. Love all your songs. Would you please play Autum Leaves in stride style, like you do on your solo vides. Also, I think you are relly nice guy. Like the way you say thank you after every song. I always answer back, thank you, thank you for the great entertainment.
Ok.... you commented right before my life fell apart. Back together now (deepest depression of my life)... Autumn leaves it shall be. In the next 3 days.
Omfg; thank you so much; you must have posted this right before my world fell apart. I'm better now (more vids are on the way as of tomorrow)... but... how did you know there was a story with me and this tune?
Anyway... cheers, and thank you so much again for listening!
Oh my.... that must have been right as my life came apart in my hands... I'm better now (sorry to have missed your comment; that's the only reason I bring it up)... Good luck. God bless, and hang onto him or her... it's all that matters... and be glad while you have it.
You, sir, are an artist that highlights the masterpieces. I got out my fedora just to listen to it a second time. You keep the music alive, man. Thanks a million times.
This is how I think Irving Berlin would have sung it. I'm impressed by anyone who can play and sing. I can't walk and chew gum at the same time. No multi-tasker I.
Awesome! This is a cool song! I recently heard Diana Krall sing this song...love that scratchy voice mixed with scotch sound! Who knew scotch was goood for your voice? LOL!
Etta James and Dinah Washington also give excellent interpretations...different, but both excellent. It's just a great song. I gotta love this guy playing with a cigarette in his hand. Classic!
GOOD question: At the time, it was a highly (although not intentionally) detuned Yamaha U3... if you';re ever in the market for a studio upright that has the touch and sound of a great baby grand (but without the defects on the soundboard), I rhighly recommend it.
I was searching Google this morning for information on "How Deep Is The Ocean". I came across this YouTube, and decided to give it a quick listen. I ended up playing it three times in a row. I LOVE it! Brought back happy memories from the past. Brought tears to my eyes. Great piano playing, with the look and sound of the 1940's. I've added it to my favorites, and will listen every time I need a nostalgia trip to lighten the load. Thank you!
You made my night. Glad you enjoyed it, and I wish I had a better recording of it for you. Speaking of which, I can't recommend Doc Cheatham's rendition highly enough; it changed my life.
Oh man, I'm so sorry to hear about your loss... my most sincere sympathies. I'll try to record some happier tunes when I get my computer back. I've got so many fucked up stories and memories associated with this song (both mine and others)... I just lost both my grandmothers the week before new year's (and one of them loved this tune)... what can ya say other than hang in there, and (if possible), be grateful for the good times you've had. Me? I'm going to crawl backinto the whiskey bottle. :(
Too kind, too kind; I don't know that there is more of that... I mean, it's my favorite song in the english language for a reason (mostly because I think it's the most perfect song I've ever heard), but I'll do my best.
as for the drunk part, I'm in a bar right now; ah the iPhone; my new best friend in my ongoing war against sobriety. But seriously; if you really like the tune check put Doc Cheaham's rendition. Now to get wasted. Dante and (once again) so sorry for your loss.
Omg! That's beautiful! You should be in Television or something. Don't know how much of all that is improvisation, but that sounded just beautiful! Keep up the good work, and play more famous jazz songs! :)
Thank you for sharing this! This is my favorite Irving Berlin song. So much so...that when my gf heard me singing it....she made a point of telling me (through tears) that when/if we ever got married, she would love to hear me sing that to her. I told her in a heartbeat, "not a problem." (Like I said, my favorite Berling tune!)
Now...I'm a singer and a wind-instrument musician...so can't touch you on the 88's...hehe. Thanks so much for sharing! 5 stars and a favorited!
One day, I'll post a vid of the story why this song is so important to me (it's my favorite in the English language). Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks so much for making my day by letting me know. Cheers!
I would love to see said clip when you get around to making it.
I know why it means so much to me....I am a musician and a hopeless romantic. Berlin captured in what originally seems like a simple song....a vast depth (no pun intended) of emotion and feeling.
Could you give me any pointers in transitioning into jazz piano? I'm a classical pianist, but I've been getting into jazz more and more lately. Where would you recommend I start?
Thank you so much for the kind words; I truly appreciate them. To answer your question: Yes, in the sense that the whole thing was improvised. Check out the video called "How Seth Improvises From Leedsheets" for details, and thank you so much for watching!
Ha! Thanks... I wasn't really aware of it at the time... I used to smoke when I play(ed) my nights at the Frog (but then we banned smoking in bars out here)... Oh well.
Wow. This is my favourite song too! I sang it for my Jazz Band...and I so wish I could play piano that well, but I can't.hehe Amazing work! Love the Jazzyness.
:-) Hey, thanks. One day I'll post the unspeakably horrible (yet true) story of why this song is as important as it is. Until then, it's just nice to hear that you enjoyed it. Thank you very much for the kind words!
All it took was lots of practice, patience, the will to fail (over and over again... and I still haven't stopped failing), and listening to the right records. Stride is hard to find. Msg me if I can help.
Hey, thanks man! It really is my favorite song in the English language (looong story)... have you heard the Doc Cheatham/Nicholas Payton recording of it (it was done shortly before Doc's death at the age of 87)? That's my fave recording.
