Otis Redding is a good selection, but starting with that when doing a history of R&B is like starting with the Renaissance when doing a history of architecture. Where's Jimmy Smith and Johnny Otis and Little Richard and Fats Domino? A lot of early rock n roll pioneers were R&B artists proper -- rock n roll was just R&B with a 4/4 kick anyway. There is such a thing as R&B pre-Motown.
