Actually, outside of Japan the "M" stands for Master: Master Bison. This was introduced in Street Alpha 3, and confirmed in the books All-About Street Fighter and All-About Capcom. Before SFA3, the "M" had no actual, real meaning.
Now, regarding the Bison in this video, everything seems right except for one thing: his cape is gray, not red.
In fact, his name is Vega, as the M stands for Mike Bison, if you can see the street fighter one it will clear all your doubts, as there the boxer, Mike, apears.
Actually, Street Fighter one's Mike is NOT the same character as the boxer in SF2.
The boxer in SF2 was ORIGINALLY INTENDED to be called Mike Bison, and to be SF1's Mike, but before releasing SF2 they changed it 'cause they were afraid of Mike Tyson sueing them.
So for the western market, they switched the names of Mike Bison (it's Mr Bison now), Vega and Balrog.
As an ulterior result of the name switch, SF2's "boxer" (M.Bison/Balrog) and SF1's Mike are now officially two different characters.
Capcom of JP officially declared that in the US the "M" stands either for "MISTER" or for "MASTER".
It's lame, if you ask me.
They should just write "Bison" in the western games, and call it a day. Even the character himself doesn't use those titles when speaking of himself, in the english dub:
"Now, face the mighty Bison" (no, the M. does NOT stand for "mighty")
Hey watch your mouth,gabrielnyc! DO NOT be dissing me! I only asked how the language was set because I NEVER saw that option before. So I suggest you to shut your mouth if you don't have anything positive to say. Thank you very much.
When Street Fighter II was localized in America, Capcom was afraid of a lawsuit from boxer Mike Tyson over a character with his likeness and a similar sounding name (Mike Bison). Additionally, when the designers presented the game to Capcom USA's marketing department, they believed that the name Vega was a weakling's name. They decided to rotate the names of three of the four boss characters in the following manner:
nice move u gave him. that flying move is cool when using bison. too bad it couldnt have a blue aura and spinning. u shoulda gave him kenshi's telekinetic powers.
They've changed names because of copyright...you know, Capcom didn't have license to use or imitate Mike Tyson's name... so they've changed Balrog to Vega cuz it looks more "Spanish", M. Bison to Balrog cuz it looks "Strong" and Vega to M.Bison to be "Master Bison" , "Mister Bison", "Major Bison" or whatever does it mean.
No acutally his name is Mike Bison, it was siad on Wikipedia it was a confusion between his name and the Boxer names(Balrog) so Balrog was Bison's original name.
Nice. Except that they're right...and I can just hear him saying, "I didn't rise through the ranks of my evil Shadaloo army/crime syndicate just to be called MR. Bison!"
Still, cool video. Where did you get the sprite from? Or did you make the sprite?

Dude, that M. Bison looks sweet, looks more like the M. Bison from the action movie street fighter.
weapontheory 4 years ago
actually, the only bit of that, thats true is the part about them not giving the black guy his name because it was to close to Mike Tyson...
the other names, Vega and Balrog were mixed up when the Capcom company expanded into the usa...the names were mixed Up.
XHopeX 4 years ago
mixed up? no, you're wrong. it was no "mix up"
do your research -

It's all wrong with the name...this is the deal:
Boss = Vega
Spanish = Balrog
Boxer = Mike Bison
They've changed names because of copyright...you know, Capcom didn't have license to use or imitate Mike Tyson's name... so they've changed Balrog to Vega cuz it looks more "Spanish", M.
