Tommy did roll back the clock. These guys both fought James Kinchen and Virgil Hill massacred him and Hearns bearly got past him. Then look at this fight. This was Hearns last great win after devastating defeats to Barkley and Hagler. Then to come back and win against an undefeated, very skilled, very technical fighter who was a boxer. As I said, Hearns never had trouble with boxers. This version of Hearns could have challenged Roy Jones at light heavy.
im surprised hearns won the light heavyweight title. props to him, and that makes his KO loss to hagler all that the more spectacular... hagler could knock out many many heavyweights too, i truly believe that with utmost conviction.
I watched this fight when it happened, and as happy as I was to see the Hitman win, I felt sad because in his last great performance he showed me that he should have been at light heavyweight all along. To me, his problems with his durability, his legs, and his chin go back to staying at 147, 154, and even 160 too long. When he moved up to 175 for Andries in '87 then came back down to 160 the same year, he was never the same.
@funnyblackmans True, but I still maintain that he campaigned at 147-160 at a cost to his body and his prime. I guess he and Emanuel Steward felt (and rightfully so) that there was more money in the lower weights. Yet Hearns' prime as a fighter paralelled the greatest era in light heavyweight boxing, and Hearns was naturally more gifted than any top light heavy at the time, Mike Spinks included.
@funnyblackmans Your point concerning Hearns' chin is well-taken. However, I maintain that it had more to do with the draining task of keeping only 160 pounds at best on a 6-foot, 2-inch frame. Case in point: When he fought Barkley at 160, he was brutally knocked out. In the rematch, though Hearns was hurt, he went the distance against Barkley and gave a better account of himself.
Hearns is a true legend, only lost to 2 ATG fighters in his prime, Leonard & Hagler. The Barkely fight was a bit past his prime in 88 I think, he rolled back the yrs for this Hill fight tho.
If he had Hagler or even Leonard`s chin he`d have beaten both of them I believe.
@primemoralesno1 he'd have beaten everyone if he had haglers chin. thats the only thing letting him him down was his chin. he had everything but a good chin. great movement, good speed, fuckoff power and reach. he was almost the perfect boxer in my eyes
Amazing body Tommy had, able to go up from welterweight to even cruiserweight (50 lb difference!!!), without sacrificing much of his power. Kinda wished he stayed at 154 a bit longer. Lot of good young talented fighters were coming up around that time...
Hearns had one of the best jab & right hand, awesome fighter and a class act! one of the 4 kings of the 80's.(Duran,Hagler,Leonard),he won titles of diff weight class by fighting the best unlike boxers today....
116-112 Thomas Hearns.. hill fought a good fight but tommy was just a bit too much. one of his best wins in a great career.. imagine if he was fighting today, even at 175 above his best weight he would wipe d floor wit these dudes. only guy i could see compete wit him is hopkins
Hill was cool here. He could have came out and did what everybody else does and say he was robbed. But it was a close fight and he accepted it like a man. He should have known better than fighting Roy Jones though.
I agree. I'm a big Hearns fan, but I really appreciated Hill's attitude in that post-fight interview. All too rare. (Worst interviews after a fight I've seen are those of Steroid James Toney -- more than onece, no class even when he wins!)
Yeah, James Toney sucks. I saw the fight where he beat the hell out of Holyfield and after the fight he was talking so much trash. How could anyone gloat after beating a washed up version of Holyfield, who would have creamed Toney just a few years earlier? When Ali talked trash it was a shtick, a show. People like Toney do it and you wanna see them crash in a car wreck...
I can give credit where credit is due, the Hitman is good, but being a Quicksilver backer all my life, he is a very good fighter too, this was an off night for Virgil, had he won this one, he would have been credited as a lot better fighter
This is the best win out of Tommy's prime.

Just an unlikeable dude (Toney is), let's face it. (Although when I say that his minions come out of the woodwork w/their profanity.)

I remember it was so much fun to listen to Toney after the Holyfield bout. "I GOT MILK BABY" - hilarious ...

Boring fight with very few highlights. Hill looks like a fighter from East Germany. Hearns wins with aggression and superior power.
