  • He not only didn't get credit for his singing - but for his songwriting, as well. Some of the songs he wrote provided part of the landscape of the 60s and 70s: "Other Side To This Life" - Jefferson Airplane; "Everybody's Talkin' At Me" - Nilsson; "Candy Man" - Roy Orbison . . . and so many more. He was as brilliant a song-writer as he was a singer - and he is missed.

  • almost makes me cry ♥

  • and like a buzzing fly buzzing into your room... :-)

  • OMG didn't he sing! Miss Him.

  • What a voice! I don´t care what he sings, it will be beautiful.

  • The weird thing about this song is that its lyrics are basically meaningless, but it's gorgeous anyway.

  • @snortfork

This is an old blues song about living in abject poverty. Actually the lyrics are quite telling. "everything I have, down in pawn".

  • Its obvious where tim buckley got his influence from, after hearing this. Good song.

  • Elizabeth Cotten wrote this one together with her grandchildren, Shake Sugaree.

  • Produced by the late and great Nik Venet. No doubt making music in heaven.

  • @SuperMaria228, I haven't thought of Nik Venet in years. That was the Liberty/UA years. I'm glad you mentioned him.

  • Caught this cut on the off the soundtrack for Trucker.

    Got hooked on it immediately.

  • Hey fellow Fred Neil fans, check out my original solo acoustic rock music. I'm really influenced by Fred Neil among others. Listen to two of my songs 'Merry Go Round' (not a cover of Fred Neil's) and 'New Epidemic'. I put up performances of my songs once every couple weeks so subscribe to my grungeboy83 channel if you want to stay updated! I'm proud to say that I play music that is unlike any of the crap out there on the radio today. I hope you like it!

Btw, what an incredible song this is!

  • He was the love of my life in 1962.....

  • Man I love this guy, I heard one of his songs on a sopranos episode, during a scene where a guy was relapsing hard on Heroin. Anyway, the song was amazing, and for the scene it made so much sense, so i looked this guy up and wow , im blown away! this guy is awesome! He was like folky but not boring folk, he reminds me of a hybrid.

  • @Bigrusssthefuss ...Another Van Gogh....

  • @Bigrusssthefuss

Exactly how I discovered him. I was so amazed how beautiful the Dolphins was, I had to look it up and I'm so glad I found him. what an incredible talent!

  • One of the things that I especially adore about Fred Neil's songs is that the arrangements are always so utterly gorgeous:very delicate and intricate...shimmering beauty that is so haunting. They never fail to showcase his amazing voice so well.

  • Fred Neil was one of those people who comes along every once in a great while who can keep you company in the worst and the best of times.

  • Sweet! Thanks for posting. David Bromberg covers a version of this that's also worthwile, though Fred Neil's voice was a treasure: dark and soulful.

  • Never heard him before, but I like his sound!!

  • The songwriters' songwriter.

"and that's the other side of this life, I'm livin...."

  • John Sebastian and Fred Neil on guitar. Cyrus Farrar on bass. Yow!

  • first heard this at granville st in york in the late sixties - becky, mary, josh and the gang - this man's music is sublime everyone in the world should know one track ....

  • I heard this in trucker, great movie great song

  • Thanks for posting.

  • Great performer who didn't get the credit he deserved.

  • WHAT A VOICE !

  • wish more artist did covers

  • Check out Chris Smither's version of this

  • what a talent fred was...wish he were still alive.

  • @goofygoat2009 Get real..someone like him never lives long...he was always in conflict. I knew him in the Village in 1961-62. He was always conflicted about something. Sad because he was so gifted...Tim Hardin..too.

  • @sohooded Well how the heck would I know that about him? I'm just complimenting his music. So he was always in conflict? Nobody's perfect.

  • @goofygoat2009

    Amen.

  • Great voice, great song!

  • It's Cotten...

  • *****

  • I listen to this because he was Tim Buckley's great inspiration. now i know why. he rules just like Tim did in his days. Love the voice, thanks for posting

  • I was introduced to Fred Neil about 1972 or so, one of my friends was a folk musician and used to perform "Blues On The Ceiling".

I think I still have the cassette tape somewhere...

  • Such a blessing to have this mans voice among those of us that give a rats ass.His range in the bass is unfriggin touchable. My friend Jim Stewart from Bryn Marr in Penn. turned me on to him while we were surfing and living in a big ole house in Mel beach fl in 67.

  • love the version os Willy De Ville from Live in Berlin acoustic trio

  • Amazing deep vocals, no one else can do this. 3:20-3:26 is fantastic too.

  • Try Merle Haggard in later years. I love deep resonant voices like Fred's.

  • Beautiful...

  • Nobody had a voice like Fred. He taught everybody listening, a lot about how to sing with soul...

  • LOved this man and his musical stylings! This is such a great song!

Thank you for posting this! *-*

  • I bought the album with this song over forty years ago. It still holds up after all these years. Beautiful! Thanks for putting it on YouTube.

  • Cotton wrote it...Neil made it his.

  • Thanks for posting. I loved Fred Neil when I was a child and haven't heard this in years. I wish all the songs on that album were on utube.

  • Hey, why don't you buy the CD -- all the material on this album is currently available on CD!!!!

  • Thank you for making that known.

  • 9/20/08-I just saw a DVD w/Fred Neil,John Sebastian,Vince Martin,Timothy B.Shmidt,etc. It was shot in 1977 @ The Coconut Grove Playhouse in the Grove.(I attended the show-18 yrs old)One of the DVD numbers made me start crying, some really beautiful stuff. Incredible dobro playing by a guy named Pete. It will be released for "The Dolphin Project" charity.(which the original concert was for) Freddy Neil has the most amazing voice that just goes right through your soul. God bless and RIP, Freddy...

  • Do you know if that DVD is still available, I'd love to get it -- I looked at two different "Dolphin Project" websites and couldn't find any reference to it!!

  • The DVD I saw was still in it's raw form, footage shot by The Dolphin Project's people. I'm not sure when it will be compiled and released...

  • The dobro must be Pete Childs. I think he is credited on some other records as Pete "Dobro" Childs...

  • you all ever heard chris gaffney cover this one on the first hacienda brothers cd? magic...

  • just got into this chap acouple of days ago,

absolutly brilliant, cant stop playing his music.thank you fred.

  • Perhaps the most undervalued musician on the planet...simply astounding singer/songwriter.

  • this is a elizabeth cotton song.

  • I had the great pleasure of knowing Fred light

years ago. Great talent, beautiful being.

Wish someone had some live footage. Incredibly

    special man.

  • Would love to know something about him as an individual. He encapsulates for me everything a song should be. I always expected him to be a bigger man (the voice; so resounding).

  • Oh hell yeah. Thank you very much. So little Fred Neil, so little time. You have touched at least one soul here, bless you.
